OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drives unleash the performance potential of the SATA 6Gbps interface, leading the speed revolution in this next-generation solution. As the first SSD to feature the SandForce 2281 controller design, OCZ designed the Vertex 3 to push the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates to blaze past the competition when every MB/s matters. With incredible 4k file writes up to 60,000 IOPS, these drives take productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms.

Built with the quality, reliability, and durability that lives up to the OCZ name, the Vertex 3 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 companion.

  • newegg Industry-Leading Performance & Endurance Driven by the second generation of SandForce SSD controller (SF-2281), the Vertex 3 Series is designed and built to unleash the full potential of the 6Gbps SATA III interface. The Vertex 3 pushes the limits in both sequential and random data transfer rates, significantly improving your productivity, gaming, multimedia, and overall computing experience. In addition, the SSD controller’s integrated enhanced DuraClass Technology is architected to leverage today’s densest MLC NAND Flash memory, delivering best-in-class performance, endurance, security, and power efficiency in a “DRAM-less”, single chip solution.
  • newegg A Superior PC Experience In addition to maximum performance, a Vertex3 upgrade promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. With no moving parts, SSDs provide peace of mind with their superior durability and reliability. Vertex 3 SSDs work in perfect harmony with next generation platforms and operating systems to deliver the ultimate storage solution.
  • newegg TRIM Support The Vertex 3 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support featured in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

4 out of 5 eggsI killed it.

Pros: I have 3 OCZ ssds not counting this one. Two 120GBs in a raid0. One 180GB in wife's pc. The 180 is refurbished and has lasted one year an 8 months and counting (running 24 hours a day). One of the 120GBs in the raid0 is refurbished and going strong for a year. My original 120 is about 3 years old and still going in that raid0. I like OCZ. I bought a corsair and it is much slower.

Cons: I went to install windows and deleted the partition, now 3 different machines can see it. I have deleted partitions in the other drives i own with the same result but installing drivers has always fixed it. OCZ Toolbox does not see it either, even the bootable version. I have to rma to the manufacturer. Hope it goes well.

Other Thoughts: I gave 4 eggs mostly because it did work well up until I deleted the partition and my past experience with other my OCZ drives influenced me as well. Many bash OCZ, but for the price and longevity I have gotten, I cannot complain.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after 8 months

Pros: None if the drive doesn't even last a year for home use.

Cons: Do I need to say anymore about drive that only last 8 months.

Other Thoughts: Will definitely think twice before buying any OCZ recertified drive. Not worth the pain to lose all the data and the effort have to reinstall everything.

1 out of 5 eggsdrive dead after 8 months

Pros: None if the drive dead in less than a year.

Cons: Refurbished warranty 180 days so it is shortly after the warranty expires, Would have given 0 star if I could.

Other Thoughts: Won't buy any OCZ recertified drive again, not worth the effort to lose all the data.

1 out of 5 eggsNotorious!

Pros: None, not even the price considering that you can get a brand new, reliable brand like Samsung or Crucial or Mushkin for about $20 more and they all carry a full 3-year warranty.

Cons: OCZ Vertex SSDs are notoriously unreliable.

They use their customers as guinea pigs to find the problems with their buggy firmware.

In spite of their aggressive marketing OCZ is in deep financial trouble.

Other Thoughts: Not sure if OCZ's newest models may have finally overcome the stigma of releasing half-baked products onto the market, but these older models are widely known as being unreliable for everyday use.

3 out of 5 eggsDied :(

Pros: It was easy to set up

Cons: It only lasted about a month and a half before giving me SMART errors...

Other Thoughts: My computer is set up so that this ssd is only running programs. ALL files that are created/saved go to a second drive, so I wasn't writing to it often, just reading from it. I'll attribute the failure to it being a factory refurbished drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

Sometimes SMART errors are legitimate and sometimes the program interpretting the SMART data is misinterpreting. Please take a moment to visit our Support Forum so we can investigate the issue. If you provide us a description of the error you receive and a screenshot of the drive SMART data taken from our Toolbox we can evaluate the status and get it taken care of. The links below may be used to visit the Support Forum and download the appropriate Toolbox.

We look forward to hearing from you!

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

Pros: It is fast and good value for the size.

Cons: I have had two of these fail on me in two months. When it dies, its like someone just turned the lights warning nothing.

Other Thoughts: To do over again, I would have spent more money and bough a better reviewed quality drive. OCZ is not very friendly to deal with for RMA and refund is not possible after 30 days. Im not willing to risk my data on this drive again. Very disappointed with OCZ.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

I am sorry to read you have experienced several failures. It appears you have already reached out to OCZ for a warranty resolution. I am disappointed to read you feel OCZ has been unfriendly in the RMA process - if that is the case please contact me via rcampbell at ocztechnology dot com and I will investigate. It is important to us that you are treated fairly, kindly, and with respect. If this was not the case I will see to it those responsible are held accountable.

On behalf of OCZ, I apologize for the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Deal!

Pros: Great price
Unit has been on for approximately 2hrs
Older but still has great performance.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: What can I say? I bought my Vertex 3 at launch costing an arm and a leg. This referb unit has 2 hours logged so it's practically brand new. Working in raid 0 with my other Vertex 3 and man is it fast. Love it.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far - so good.

Pros: Works fast. High write speeds for large files, as expected. Was about twice as fast on OS installation than the crucial M4, also as expected based on reviews.

Cons: Came with 3 bad (unrecoverable) sectors logged in SMART sectors. Relying on the write distribution firmware to mitigate the effects. Probably won't last that long, though.

Other Thoughts: Very interesting - so much faster than Vertex 4. Perhaps the speed is at the cost of reliability. I will monitor closely and make frequent backups, I recommend the same.
