4 out of 5 eggsAs fast as more expensive units.

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: -Advertized speed. As fast as Samsung 840 Pro 256GB in real user scenarios. I cannot tell the difference between the two, unless I run a benchmark or use Photoshop… where Samsung beat OCZ by a second.
-SSD bracket included.
-Acronis TrueImage HD included (as a download)
-Excellent price ($145) when in sale (The main reason I took the plunge) Good regular price .
-It arrived with latest 2.0 firmware

Cons: I am a little concerned about its reliability.
It also had a $15 rebate which I never got (-1 egg). Where's my money?

Other Thoughts: -I was very reluctant to order an OCZ SSD drive, since when it comes to reliability OCZ didn’t seem to have a good grasp on the technology.
-First time I don't get a rebate. I was supposed to get a $15 rebate card and I after 10 weeks I have not received anything and I did follow all steps as instructed and kept copies. Took one egg for that reason, otherwise 5 eggies.

3 out of 5 eggsAdditional Comment

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I am commenting to "Robert" who just sent me an e-mail from OCZ "correcting me" on my earlier post. He states that the OCZ Vertex 450 series VTX450-256G 2.5" 256 GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid state drive had been flashed Rev 1.0, 1.17, and 2.0 long before I received it. THAT IS NOT CORRECT. Go back and read my earlier post. I said, and I say again, that we went to the OCZ website where we checked what revision we had. It read from from OCZ's website at REVISION 1.0 That drive came out of a cellophane package !

Cons: I do not feel that the information that "Robert" gave me is correct.

Other Thoughts: I stand behind what I said earlier. There are still some "bugs" in these drives. And the public is getting the opportunity of guinea pigging the drives. I do not doubt that they will get better and become trouble free, but today ?

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,

It may be best if you contact me directly, as I can help you personally with any continued problem you are experiencing. I do need to publicly correct some misquotes and misinformation. I never said "that the OCZ Vertex 450 series VTX450-256G 2.5" 256 GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid state drive had been flashed Rev 1.0, 1.17, and 2.0 long before I received it" as you stated in your feedback. What I actually said is "The Vertex 450 has had 3 firmware updates, 2 from initial manufacturing and 1 public release. These are firmwares 1.0, 1.17, and 2.0." This was in response to the misinformation from your 2nd review, which stated "There have been 4-7 OTHER REVISIONS IN FIRMWARE for the drive I am describing, not counting the latest Revision 2.0." That leads other users to falsly believe there have been a minimum of 5 released updates and possibly as many as 8. That is not correct and I do not want other users or potential users to be confused or misled.

I am more than happy to discuss any of this with you personally. It is important to me that you are confident in your replacement product. Your earlier review indicated you had taken to drive to a friend at a computer store to perform the firmware update - if this is not the case I will gladly help with that. The firmware update process is a simple point and click procedure and takes less than 5 minutes.

I am very sorry you experienced issues with your initial Vertex 450 and understand your frustration. If I can help in any way moving forward please let me know. I can be reached anytime using the contact information below.

On behalf of OCZ, I apologize for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,

Robert

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up review on January failure

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Drive failed ? Feb 25 ? ( parts were collected before building); made mistake of tossing boxes, shipped carefully packed defective drive back to NewEgg with RMA. Arrives NewEgg March 13, verified. Feb25 OCZ responds to post; 3 e-mails exchanged with customer service OCZ Feb 27, 28; Further e-mails to NewEgg @ March 3; Initiate call to VISA for refund; NewEgg confirms shipment of new drive to me 24 hrs later; New drive arrives March 14th

Cons: Do not attempt to ship or return a part to NewEgg with without EVERYTHING that was in the original box. DO NOT throw out boxes when you build ! It seemed to me that OCZ and NewEgg had difficulty communicating with each other.

Other Thoughts: OK, so I have a brand new pretty SSD drive wrapped in cellophane. I take the new SSD to my friend at the computer store and ask him to make sure the "firmware" is up to date. This drive may be newer than the original. We go to OCZ site which tells us in his shop that is has Firmware Rev 1.0 HE is very surprised because he generally doesn't worry about it. Now he is thinking differently. There have been 4-7 OTHER REVISIONS IN FIRMWARE for the drive I am describing, not counting the latest Revision 2.0 So when these things are made they can be sitting in a warehouse by the hundreds or thousands with firmware that is 4-18 months "old". You buy it, pop it in your computer, which may boot or not. You probably haven't updated the firmware. and SOMETHING then happens. If you are buying these kinds of drives, you need to think about that.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

Thank you for sharing your followup feedback. I am glad Newegg has provided you with a replacement. The Vertex 450 has had 3 firmware updates, 2 from initial manufacturing and 1 public release. These are firmwares 1.0, 1.17, and 2.0. Now that your drive has firmware 2.0 you should be all set moving forward.

Thank you again for your purchase. If you have any issues in the future please contact me directly via the email address below and I will help however possible.

On behalf of OCZ, I apologize for the inconvenience!

Kind Regards,

Robert

1 out of 5 eggsno more OCZ for me

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: it's OCZ
was using this brand products.
do have power supply and memory and ssd

Cons: OCZ firmware update will clean out your SSD.
need to reinstall everything after update firmware.
person who use acronis or other cloning software please do have your backup.
or just don't do any firmware update.

Other Thoughts: OCZ power, speed, and warranty is great but after firmware update and loose all my files...
it can be "what ever don't do firmware update" and "o m g every firmware update i have to move my data to some place else...

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The firmware update for the Vertex 450 is not data destructive. While we always recommend having a backup in place prior to a firmware update, this is the first report I know of where someone experienced data loss from a Vertex 450 firmware update. I am very sorry this has occurred. I would appreciate the opportunity to compile your system details, drive serial number, and update method (Windows or Bootable Toolbox) and have this investigated further. Please contact me at your earliest convenience using the email address below.

Thank you very much for your purchase!

Robert

1 out of 5 eggsDefective Hard Drive

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The solid state hard drive was purchased on 12/10/2013. The drive stopped working on 2/15/2014. Every effort has been made to return the module to the manufacturer with no success. Joseph P. Anzalone owns Armor Development examined the module and determine it to be defective. I want the solid state drive to be exchanged for a new functional unit.

Cons: Defective solid state unit.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsOCZ Vertex 450 series VTX450 -25SAT3 - 256 G

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Was faster than ide, no question. I initially succeeded in shrinking the C: drive and creating a 30 MB Data drive. And then ...

Cons: After spending 12 days, customizing desktop and installing programs, and getting familiar with Windows 8, I shut the Windows 8 desktop down and went to bed. The following morning, nothing. The computer store that helped me build it, tested the solid state drive and found it DEAD. We RMA'd it just three days under the initial 30 day warranty.

Other Thoughts: I actually had attempted writing image files to two external harddrives before the failure. Nothing I tried worked. Of course, if the drive was dead, what would work ? So I don't know if writing an image file to an external hard drive is a good way to restore an image yet (haven't tested it) or if DVD's are practicle. I would change my rating if the replacement is reliable. Also, how do you do "firmware" updates ?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

I am very sorry to read of the problems you experienced with your Vertex 450. It appears you have already sought a replacement from Newegg. Upon receiving your replacement you should immediately update the drive firmware. That can be done with our OCZ Bootable Toolbox before installing Windows 8 or immediately after installing Windows 8 with our OCZ Toolbox. Links to both the Bootable Toolbox and Windows Toolbox (with guides) are linked below. If you experience any further issues with your drive please contact our Support Forum. We will gladly guide you in updating your drive firmware and answer any other questions you might have.

On behalf of OCZ, I apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced.

Kind Regards,

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive at Good Price

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This was the 4th SSD drive we tested for some very high-end gaming systems we build for customers. The primary reasons at first were cost and the performance numbers posted in the drive stats. At the time it was one of the fastest drives (on paper) available, so we set out and ordered several for testing. We also have several other SSD's from other manufacturers that are the best of the best.

Money is not an object, as I work for a billionaire and he wants the best and fastest system money can buy. In order to do that, we have large, dedicated test and build labs that I manage along with several staff members, whom I actually have do the build and test work (I oversee the process and help spec out the parts, etc).

We wanted the fastest possible configuration so of coarse we ordered four of these drives and put them into a stripped / mirrored configuration (which provides the best of both worlds, speed and redundancy). Officially known as RAID 10, we got everything installed and were able to load Windows 8.1 fairly easily. We had to install the drivers for the drive controller, but the drives themselves were recognized and ran without issue.

After everything was installed, including large liquid cooling system, i7-3960X processor, dual top-of-the-line NVIDIA video cards, 4-Vertex 450 series 256GB SSD drives (RAID 10), 4-Seagate 1TB Hybrid SSD drives (1TB magnetic drive + 8GB SSD Hybrid) in RAID 5, dual 1000W power supplies, lighting system and 32 GB of the fastest RAM Newegg sells, we were all set to start running tests.

Even though this system has been replaced by newer systems now (We build out a new system every other month, so we are always running the latest and greatest items) this system is still running as my work system now and is still one of the fastest computers I've ever run. It's still fast and still going strong without issues (with the drives that is... the dual video cards are a WHOLE NEW NIGHTMARE!).

The systems we build are consistently some of the fastest water cooled systems in the world (registered on various PC performance testing sites). When this system with the quad 450's was built, it placed in second place. We found out that the person in 1st used ALL SSD drives, whereas we didn't. A mistake we would not make again!

At many times our systems are listed in the top 2 fastest PC's. For a long time we were number 1, then some crazy folks started using liquid Nitrogen cooled systems!! My boss wanted us to get certified to handle liquid nitrogen, so we too could build such systems, but I pushed back and talked him into sticking with water based cooling systems. Now there are different categories for the different types of cooling, so we only compete in the water based cooling systems. We stay away from the exotic stuff for practical reasons.

We did build an oil cooled system where the motherboard was completely submerged in oil, etc. It worked great, but not very practical :)

Cons: Costs have gone up recently... no whole drive encryption support or other new technologies, but it wasn't that big of a deal.

Other Thoughts: This drive is one of the best drives I've tested and use on a regular basis. I liked this drive so much, it's what I run in my personal systems. I've never gotten a bad drive and so far I've never had one go bad on me, out of the 8 we have used so far.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick, reliable as far as I can tell

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Had it running my OS and all games since it arrived. PC has been on 24/7, and in addition hosting a server for gaming. Under these circumstances, given that it has been a month since I got it in my new rig, I am very pleased with the performance and reliability of it. Pretty hard for SSDs to fail, but still I like when things work right out of the box. No software to install or anything, just plug and play. Compared to my old HDD, this thing boots my Windows 8 on my fx-8350 in nearly four seconds flat. A closer look at write and reading speeds hit the advertised mark. It also takes up no room, very small. You could even hide it somewhere out of the way but i wouldn't recommend that.

Cons: It made my HDD a paper weight?

Other Thoughts: The size makes it my main drive on my system. It holds all my games and files, and still has nearly 100GB to spare. I don't need my HDD anymore. That makes it a great backup tool.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible utility software

This review is from: OCZ Vertex 450 Series VTX450-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: SSD is good until it fails

Cons: Had a older version (Vertex 2) but this review applies to all OCZ SSDs as the util software works for all of their drives.

My drive uses a older version of firmware, and has been working for the past 2 years. About a week ago my drive starts failing and my computer randomly crashes. Try to run the util app, and it only works when 1) the drive is not the primary drive, and 2) drive must run in AHCI mode to install new firmware --- IDE is the default mode for many of the systems.

My computer uses IDE mode and never bothered to change to AHCI. As my drive went down, I followed the instructions I found on the forums and it's been a nightmare.

First the SSD fails much quicker in AHCI mode compares to IDE. It will fail before it even boot into Windows, and there's no exe for running in DOS mode. Now I have to create a bootable linux USB and try my luck again. Had been trying to fix this drive for 3 days.. arrrrrrgh...
