1 out of 5 eggsWaste of Money

Pros: One pro... the price

Cons: I ordered two 50gb Drives (running on a Z87). One was able to boot the other failed immediately. I updated the firmware on both SSD's to no avail. After talking with OCZ they insisted I try the SSD's on another system... I am in the process of RMA'ing the drives. I suggest staying away from OCZ, you get what you pay for.

4 out of 5 eggsGood so far!

Pros: CHEAP! Scored it for 31.99. 14 second booting on my old Core2Duo I turned in to a HTPC. Had retail packaging and latest firmware installed.

Cons: Too soon to tell, but I did have some weirdness when installing Windows 7. It got to the final step "Completing Installation" and just hung, I had to reboot and install again, and everything seemed good. Also had some weird hanging on one of the windows updates. Will report back if it's anything related to the SSD, might be something with the rest of the old hardware I frankensteined together for this HTPC.

Other Thoughts: Great for a HTPC! When I decide to watch netflix, I don't want to wait 2 minutes for the box to boot up. I'm getting to a usable desktop in 14 seconds with this guy. I was apprehensive about my purchase at first as others have had theirs arrive DOA, but mine seems to be working fine. Will update if that changes.

5 out of 5 eggsFast on the cheap

Pros: Breathes new life into older systems. Impossible to beat for the price.

Cons: 50gb is enough for an OS but not much else. You will need another hard drive for data. Took me multiple tries to get it to boot properly, had to keep trying different SATA ports (pretty sure this is my motherboard's problem)

Other Thoughts: I bought a refurb 60GB Vertex 2 a year ago for my HTPC and it has been great. Picked up 2 of these 50GB's for some other systems. One was an easy upgrade, the other I had to reinstall Windows just could not make the thing boot properly from a cloned image. Afternoon wasted, but that's ok, fresh install probably preferrable anyway.

5 out of 5 eggsNew Life for an Old Machine

Pros: Upgraded from a 500GB WD Black drive. Fresh W7x64 install on this drive with latest firmware and my machine assembled from mostly older hardware has a new lease on life. The difference in everything from boot time to application performance is noticeably (and measurably) quicker.

I was tempted to go with something newer with better IOPS and a more advanced fabrication process (like an 840) however the older AM3 board I am using is limited to SATAII, which makes the high bandwidth and feature set of the new drives rather useless to me on this machine. Plus, for the price of three Hamiltons, it was the far cheaper option....

HDTune measured the following for the Vertex2: Min read 114mb/s, max read 212mb/s, average 172mb/s. Access time is 0.132ms, burst rate of 189mb/s.

Compare that to what HDTune measured for the WD Black 500GB: Min read 80mb/s, max read 129mb/s, average 105mb/s. Access time of 14.6ms, burst rate of 169mb/s.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: We will see how reliability works out over the medium term; I've imaged the drive for backup and will run this one several months before I format my old boot drive and re-purpose it into storage. Always keep a backup!

2 out of 5 eggsso so

Pros: It is quick when it is working. Ordered two of them. One was DOA and had to RMA it. Sucked having to pay to send it back, but on newegg, it was fairly fast. sent in on a Friday had the replacement drive on Tuesday.

Cons: now the other one that was good is starting to have start up issues. has to boot like 3 times before it will load windows. Going to RMA it toady too. The RMA replacement is also starting to do it.

Other Thoughts: I know it's not the PSU just got a new one as well and it is way more power then I need. (700 watts) Thinking it could have been the MSI motherboard but the regular HD I have work just fine.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Sam,

I am sorry to read of the problems you have been experiencing with several Vertex 2 drives. Please contact our Support Forum and describe the issue and provide host system details. We will help determine the cause and advise simple steps to correct the issue.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards,

5 out of 5 eggsCheap, and it works!

Pros: Very inexpensive, much faster than a mechanical drive. My old Alienware 9700m is more responsive and boots faster than before.

Cons: I could find very little wrong with this SSD. Windows showed it as being a 1.9 TB drive at first, and formatting was a bit of a hassle, but it works as intended so far. So I guess there are no real cons to speak of.

Other Thoughts: My Alienware 9700M is never going to be able to take full advantage of the speed this SSD is capable of, but for the money I was happy with the performance increase it provided. It is much faster than the 7200 RPM drive that it replaced.

4 out of 5 eggsOCZ SSD2-2VTX50G.RF

Pros: My box boots up 8 seconds faster with this ssd than from my 3.5 inch drive drives.

Cons: Was going to use it as my "boot-n-/" drive. But it gets pretty warm after being on for more than fifteen minutes, had to put another fan blowing directly on it, besides the regular fans for that zone, to get it near as cool as my other drives.
I guess it's a cheap lesson for getting a refurb. it would cost me too much to send it back to get a replacement. so I guess thats that.

Other Thoughts: won't ever buy a refurb again. I just wonder if it will last through the winter, but at least it warms up my room in the meantime.
