5 out of 5 eggsUpdate After Receiving The SSD

Pros: Linux Support
Solid Good Looking 7mm SSD
Fast Speeds As Advertised
Competitive Price
Rebate Received Quickly

Cons: It didn't come from the future when we will look back on these products as slow junk!

Other Thoughts: I wrote another review before I received my drive with information about the NAND and controller speed and other technical info.

Now that I have the SSD installed it's great with speeds just like Bruce C reports which is between 500 and 550 MBs read and write depending which benchmark you use.

And like Eric O reports the speed doesn't drop to 100 MBs like an EVO with large files. The OCZ remains above 400 MBs even if the file is 10+ TB's in size!

See both of those reviews, they're not lengthy and give you solid numbers and information.

My boot time is 12 seconds flat in Mageia Linux 4. Do this in a terminal:

>systemd-analyze plot > boot.svg

It analyzes your boot time for each process and gives you a graph allowing you to see which ones take the longest so that you may improve them or remove them totally if it is something you don't use.

Mine was taking 27 seconds to try and connect to wifi. Since I'm wired I disabled connect wifi at boot cutting my boot time considerably! Had I been using wifi it would've been able to connect and I'd have about an 18-20 second boot time. You can click icons etc in less than 15 seconds but just don't have internet until it connects when using wifi.

ArchWiki has very good information on benchmarking and testing SSD's.

This drive is everything OCZ says it is and the Vector 150 is a few percent faster with a 5 year warranty but cost more. You'll never notice the difference without benchmarking it, you're paying for the extra warranty with a little speed increase for incentive and bragging rights.

Where the Vertex 460 shines is moving large files. I know the EVO is all the rage but it uses trickery, a little magic to reach the speeds it does and most reviews don't show you the numbers when moving a TB or two of data.

I'm not trying to knock the EVO but I never did like that about it or the TLC flash it uses. The Toshiba MLC NAND in the 460 is much better hands down, it's just a fact.

You will get your rebate! I received my rebate faster than they say but that don't mean you will. They say 8 weeks or whatever to give them plenty of time and during a heavy work load it may not be as fast as mine, but you'll get it if you follow the instructions.

Be aware that when it says 3 rebates per household to mail them in separate envelopes! Read the terms and conditions carefully!

I took the rebate card, popped it in a gas pump, done!

The OCZ Vertex 460 represents a great value in terms of quality, performance and price. Throw in Linux support and you have a clear cutting edge leader!

When word gets around the OCZ line will be what Linux users buy!

I did not install Windows on it but plenty of others have without problems.

Pros: Stats according to Samsung Magician software:
Read - 540 Mb/s
Write - 515 Mb/s
Read IOPS - 84296
Write IOPS - 88891

Im running the drive as my primary drive which slightly lowered the speeds from the first time I ran the software test as a bare drive.

Looks like you actually get what you are paying for. Stats are right around what OCZ (Toshiba) is advertising for the drive. My PC boots up in about 15-18 secs via UEFI install into Windows 8 Pro. At the price of $110-120 after rebate for a 240 GB SSD, its a great deal.

Cons: Lets hope Toshiba has solved OCZ's quality control issues of the past and the drive works well past the 3 year warranty period.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

Pros: Fast drive, even considering that I am using a SATA 2 interface. Benchmark shows higher IOPS than my laptop using a Mushkin Chronos (not Deluxe) that uses SATA3.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I may consider adding a SATA3 card, but not sure how noticeable the improvement would be in everyday use.

5 out of 5 eggsAdjusted review

Pros: Customer Support fixed the Rebate problem. I received rebates for both drives. I get the feeling this was not normal and more an exception than the rule for OCZ.

Cons: Working good so far.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you very much for sharing your updated review! The Vertex 460 is an awesome drive - enjoy!

Best Regards,
OCZ Support

5 out of 5 eggsRevised Review

Pros: Customer Service took care of Rebates for 2 drives as advertised. i'm still unsure what the problem was but an email to rebate department and a few follows-ups from customer support resolved the situation.

Cons: All problems with my initial report concerning were resolved and I have no cons for the drive itself.

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless

Pros: Priced right for the time @ $.50 per Gb after rebate which came within four weeks of submission. So far: Perfect performance in a Win8 64bit Latitude. Serves as a replacement for my 120Gb OCZ Agility SSD which has been moved to a Win7 64bit server using the included conversion tray for installation in full sized 3.5" slot. Package also included Acronis for easy migration, though I used the free version of Paragon Backup & Restore on Win8 64 bit. What else can you ask for?

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: So far, OCZ has proven to be the better value.

3 out of 5 eggsA tad disappointed

Pros: It's aluminum encased and looks very sleek.
I love how solid and dense it feels.
Got it on sale for 99.99 after MIR.

Cons: I have always been an OCZ fan. Everything from PSU to SSD, Ive tried to purchse from OCZ if possible but this might be the deal breaker here. I've owned everything from the agility 2 up to this vertex 460 and I felt like the last good product was the vertex 4. Despite having a higher number of NAND flashes this one has a slightly longer boot up time compared to my 128GB vertex 4. I've also had 1 or 2 episodes of failing to boot up. Need to dig further into why it happened. I feel like it may be the barefoot controller. I've never experience any of these issues with the previous Indilinx or even sandforce controllers that were on the vertex 3. I feel like a firmware update is an order.

Other Thoughts: I got this SSD because it was on sale and because I've always belived in OCZ but I feel like the quality of their work might have been impacted by their bankruptcy. In terms of aesthetics, the sticker on the SSD was placed crooked and had large air bubbles in the middle. Wanted to lift it up and realign the sticker in the right position but felt like the sticker would be ruined if i tried to lift it. It was stuck on pretty hard.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

First, thank you for your purchase and for sharing your feedback! The Vertex 460 is considerably more advanced than the Vertex 4 and boot up time should not show much variance between models. If anything the Vertex 460 should allow slightly faster startup if a direct comparison is made. If possible, I would like to explore the startup issue you have noted as well as the physical quality issues described. Please feel free to contact me at the email address below. Please describe your startup time with each drive; for example, power on to POST, POST to desktop/start screen and the total times. If you also include pictures of the drive label I would like to pass that to our QC team; I have not heard similar reports to date.

Thank you again for your purchase and I look forward to hearing from you!

Kind Regards,

OCZ Storage Solutions

1 out of 5 eggsThey don't honor rebate offer

Pros: It's an average SSD ( but see cons)

Cons: For those with tray-less mobile racks, the drive is shorter than the average SSD and 2.5 hard disk. As a result, it will not seat the drive properly to make a connection with the SATA connection of the rack when the OCZ drive is latched in position. The OCZ drive is the only drive I've had this problem using mobile rack from several manufactures.

Other Thoughts: Bought 2 of these drives based on the rebate Offer Code: OCZ2-12393. Which clearly states that up to 3 rebates per offer are authorized. This was a OCZ rebate offer and I received notice that the rebate would be honored for one drive and the rebate for the second drive was denied.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

I am sorry to read about your rebate difficulties. There are several rebate offers and many have been limited to one rebate per customer per address. I have checked this particular offer and it does say "Limit Three (3) rebate per qualifying rebate offer, per person, billing address, company, household and receipt/invoice/packing slip during the eligibility period, except were prohibited by law. Only one (1) rebate application per envelope." As long as the terms are met the rebate should be honored; if it wasn't an error may have been made. Please contact us and we will investigate and work to correct any error. You may contact using the link below.

Regarding the drive form factor concerns, the Vertex 460 is a modern 7mm SSD. The height does not affect the positioning of the connector so it should fit in any standard environment. We would be happy to help you with this. You can contact our support using the link below.

Thank you very much for your purchase and we look forward to hearing from you!

1 out of 5 eggsfirst SSD experience

Pros: all-metal case, nice packaging, good online reviews

Cons: Had to RMA. HD access light would come on and OS (windows 7 home premium 64bit fresh install) would hang for 2-3 minutes. I'm currently waiting on the RMA process to see if OCZ will repair/replace my SSD.

Other Thoughts: OCZ suggested RMA after working with tech support over email. Tech support was pretty responsive, generally replying to queries within 1-2 hours on business days. I had to pay shipping for RMA since OCZ refused. Newegg would not let me RMA with them since I cut the UPC off to redeem a $20 mail-in manufacturer rebate. Lesson learned: I'm never buying tech with a mail-in rebate again! I'll see if I can update this review if/when I ever get this SSD working.
