1 out of 5 eggsnot fully stable

This review is from: OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Well, it does score high on AS SSD. Be sure to read everything about this drive.

Cons: After installing the latest firmware and drivers from OCZ (load them on a USB stick), the drive will BSOD after sleep and every now and then decide not to be recognized by the BIOS. Based on what others say, it seems this is not unique to the UEFI BIOS.

Other Thoughts: Installing drivers is similar to installing RAID drivers, so no big surprise. But after a few years of being around, I thought maybe the bugs were worked out. Also, note the RMA policy on tis drive (replacement only).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Kyle R.,

I am sorry to read you have been experiencing some problems with the RevoDrive 350 in your system. While I have not previously read reports of a failure to wake from sleep, I do know conditions that could cause the drive to disappear during the POST sequence and I can correct that. I would like to assist you with this - please contact me using the email address below. In your email please include basic system details (system model number or motherboard model and installed OS version). If I cannot quickly correct the behavior I will arrange a RMA for your product.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and I look forward to discussing this with you!

Kind Regards,

Robert

4 out of 5 eggsVery Fast

This review is from: OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This thing is fast..crazy fast. And they lie about the speed ratings, I was able to hit over 2GB read and almost 1.8GB write. Better to under rate your product than over promise though.

Windows 8.1 boots insanely fast and works perfect with this drive. Infact, due to the drivers, I had to upgrade to Windows 8 because windows 7 drivers don't really take full advantage of its capabilities.

Photoshop CC doesn't boot instantly as I had hoped, it hangs for a second when scanning for presets, which could be the seek speed decrease of the RAID 0, or perhaps a limitation of my CPU. It is still twice as fast as my old SSD when starting so I am happy.

Cons: Okay, so the bad part is here that the drive died after 1 week of running. My computer runs 24/7 but has great airflow, so it was a full week of always on.

And by "Die" I mean it stopped booting. And the "Insert Boot Media" error I googled seemed to be common with OCZ SSD's. I have had an OCZ SSD fail on me before, but I had hoped the Toshiba purchase improved the quality, mainly because I have had good luck with them.

The drive was technically still readable...and would even preform well in speed tests. But, it refused to boot, even with a fresh windows install. Without any system changes or BIOS changes, it just randomly decided to stop booting. Luckly my distrust in old OCZ drives had me doing nightly clones to my old SSD, so not too much harm was done...but still for 850, I'd hoped for some reliability.

it is being sent back to NewEgg for an RMA as we speak. I fear from the previous reviews, and from what I have see in my live CD cloning software, that I may not be able to clone back to the drive once it comes in, but we shall see.

I still give this unit 4 stars because of what it can do. For the week, I was flying through projects with little to no wait time on image processing and some light video rendering. Now back on my old SSD, I really miss this thing...

Other Thoughts: Honestly, this has put a bad taste in my mouth. I am half temped to just return it and wait for the INTEL PCI express 3.0 SSD that is coming out soon. It will only be $100 more and made by Intel...

I understand though that these things happen. Being an enthusiast PC builder, I know things can go wrong. Still, it is frustrating when it goes wrong with me, lol.

5 out of 5 eggsVery fast

This review is from: OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Brought life back to my old Mac running VM servers because of the amazingly fast speed relative to the regular SATA drives.

Cons: none so far. I hope it lasts like a regular drive because I have read so many posts about SSDs that they only last a year.

Other Thoughts: Installed this in a 2008 Mac Pro with two 2.8GHz quad core Intel Xeon processors and bootcamp. The installation was easy but it took time to figure out how to make it the boot drive. I installed Windows 7 Pro on a regular SATA drive and then on the RevoDrive. The RevoDrive is the default boot now and runs the two MS servers in VMware. Remote access to these servers went from just fast enough to be bearable to great. Such a difference that I do not even feel the need to upgrade to a newer computer anymore.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

Thank you for sharing your valuable feedback! On behalf of everyone at OCZ, we are thrilled to read the RevoDrive 350 has revitalized your system!

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Insanely fast when installed in my old computer. Great drive, solid build, love the blue LED and the green indicator. It was easy to install.

Cons: The drive seems to perform slower than advertised. Using CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 I got the following result after 5 test runs.

Seq: Read: 1148 MB, Write: 695.2 MB
512k: Read: 813.4 MB, Write: 613.9 MB
4k: Read: 25.63 MB, Write: 52.28 MB
4k/QD32: Read: 339.3 MB, Write: 180.5 MB

My build is:

2x Intel Xeon E5-2630 2.2 Ghz
Asus Z9PE-D8 WS mother board
Kingston HyperX 32gig 1600mhz
Sony 16x Bluray writer
OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series 480GB

OCZ if you are reading this please help :-)

Other Thoughts: For some reason I would always get a blue screen during a fresh install so I re-installed windows 7 on my old SATA SSD and after installing service pack 1 cloned the drive onto this one and it worked just fine.

As soon as I can get the issue resolved I will post another comment. I really hope OCZ can help me resolve my issue because overall i love the card.

I definitely recommend this card. This issue might be on my part and not the actual drive

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We will gladly asssist with your speed concerns! Any drive using the SandForce SF-2282 NAND controller(s) will show wide-ranging results depending on the benchmarking program and test data set used. The maximum sequential speeds of the 480GB RevoDrive 350 are determined using ATTO Disk Benchmark as noted on the product page and product brief. 4K random performance is measured with IOMeter 2010 w/QD32 using incompressible data. If you retest with ATTO, your product should match the maximum specified numbers if the drive is connected to a x8 or x16 PCIe slot.

It is difficult to remotely determine the cause of the installation blue screen. With the system now up and running you may not want to start over and troubleshoot the cause, but if you do we will gladly assist. The RevoDrive 350 should install smoothly if connected properly using the provided driver. If you have any questions at all please contact our Tech Support and we will answer any questions and help you get the most out of this amazing product.

Thank you very much for your purchase and for sharing your feedback!

Best Regards,

4 out of 5 eggsOCZ Revodrive 350 480GB

This review is from: OCZ RevoDrive 350 Series RVD350-FHPX28-480G PCI-E 480GB PCI-Express 2.0 x8 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very cool looking product, blue/green leds and the hardware is very easy to install. The speed is as advertised.

Cons: If you want it as your boot drive, you need to load Windows from scratch - no cloning.
If your bios is UEFI, be prepared to set your bios to allow for a non-UEFI driver

Other Thoughts: This PCI-e storage device freed up two of my Sata ports that I was using for a slower raid 0 drive.
