5 out of 5 eggsOCZ knocked it out of the park again!

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: Good packaging, nice and simple. Drive looks cool. This is my third OCZ SSD and the first one that I have is still working well. OCZ Barefoot Controller is known to be a very decent controller and looks to know be a proprietary Toshiba part. I am going to assume that they bought out OCZ maybe? I've always had good look with both OCZ and Toshiba products. Also uses 19nm flash (small and fast). Honestly, with pretty much any modern SSD you'll have excellent and FAST performance. Some drives do offer a little bit more over-head that others, but this drive is still no slouch at all. I was able to average around 360-440 MB/sec read which is VERY respectable. The Gigabyte Mainboard that I used for testing was that of the X99 chipset and close to 390MB/sec (sustained) for writing. Windows 10 of course boots in around 15 seconds. Easily the best part about an SSD is watching how fast stuff loads up! 5 year warranty is really nice, I sort of think that OCZ feels that this is close to an enterprise ssd, so that is why they feel they can give more warranty. Also, 50GB endurance rating is way more than enough for most everyone out there, other that maybe a CRAZY power user or if this drive is used in an Enterprise environment. Having said that, I'm sure it would still be okay.

Cons: I honestly can't think of any cons for this drive. The price is excellent as is the ample storage. A drive like this will last most people a LONG time and 960GB is a great size!

Other Thoughts: For people on the fence about this (or any SSD) you really just need to buy one. The performance that you get from a drive like this is amazing. A first timer will wonder why they did not upgrade sooner. I know that most people will think that the size of this drive is over-kill for an office environment, but man is this drive fast. If you have a computer that is even 4 years old, you could clone the drive (since it comes with SUPER easy to use Acronis) on to this OCZ and watch how fast everything will be after. It really is one of the best upgrade you can do. Add an SSD and a little bit more RAM and your computer will last even longer! The ShieldPlus Warranty makes this drive even better as well. Now you do not have to wait for a replacement drive, they basically do an advanced exchange, you get a new drive and then send back the dead one. I'm sure we'll see the other guys catch up and have an option like this as well... Even with me being a EggExpert reviewer, I want people to know what is going to work, how intuitive a product is and that it is a value, because at the end of the day that is all one can ask for! I look forward to continued good service out of this product and feel that it is a great deal!

4 out of 5 eggsGood offering from OCZ

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: OCZ's Vector 180 is their flagship SSD offering featuring Toshiba 19nm 128Gbit MLC NAND and the faster binned M00 397MHz controller.

Fit and finish is nice and standard with their other offerings, only the color scheme changes, same
7mm z-height.

Bench numbers for the most part match what OCZ has stated and what top SSD's should be able to reach.

New to the Vector 180 is the Power Failure Management Plus (PFM+). This feature detects
power anomalies and helps protect the SSD from “bricking’ while safeguarding at-rest data.

In-flight data is not protected though. The firmware logic and small amount of
capacitance on the SSD guard potential data loss by detecting power anomaly. In the event
that a power anomaly is detected, the capacitors on the drive will serve to power the
drive to protect system-critical routines where the firmware creates a new mapping table
shots and writes it to the non-volatile flash before the drive is shut down.

The drive also will periodically creates snapshots of the mapping table and saves them to flash.

You could call this enterprise light and certainly is a nice feature for a consumer drive.

The Indidinx barefoot 3 M00 controller features BCH ECC correction up to 44 random bits/1KB, SMART, AES-256 encryption, TRIM, and idle time garbage collection but does not include TCG Opal 2.0 and IEEE-1667 compliance due to being three years old.
Black metal 3.5 bracket is included if needed as well as screws and Acronis True Image 2014 [Predates win10] activation code.

5 year ShieldPlus Warranty is a nice bonus versus the typical 3 years ans is touted as being hassle and drama free.

The endurance rating is 50GB/day of host writes for 5 years, significant more than what you would expect from a budget SSDs typical 20GB/day.
For reference it's competition the Evo 850 can handle 30TB a year vs 18TB for the Vector 180 so technically is not as durable by those standards.

Current price/GB is one of the best @ roughly 35 cents.

SSD Guru is a handy program to check firmware, stats, SMART, etc.

Cons: Controller PCB does not include indents for SATAIII cables to snap in securely. This has become a standard protocol for desktop drives for years. Cables are very snug and should remain in place but it should have been included.
Idle @ 1 watt, no devsleep or slumber power states thus not the most ideal for laptops for power savings.
Lacking eDrive and Opal support as well.

Other Thoughts: Formats to 894GB

Faster read/writes with higher queue depths suggesting geared more towards enterprise and higher workload.

Hit 93F during long read/writes with a 140mm 75CFM fan blowing on it. No issues in a desktop but in a laptop it could get warm but hopefully stay in spec.

Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 169.357 MB/s [ 41346.9 IOPS

Overall a solid offering from OCZ/Toshiba group. Speeds are not the very top but are respectable, no frills 5 year warranty, PFM+ enterprise features included.

5 out of 5 eggsROOM AND SPEED

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: -seemed like best all around performance per $, which is what I was looking for
knock on wood, seems quite reliable
-just as fast as my 850 evo, or so it seems, afaik that's what matters

Cons: -none so far

Other Thoughts: i recommend this drive to everyone, having a 1tb ssd as your C: drive is so 2016!

4 out of 5 eggsQuality SSD with good warranty

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: Installed in my PS4 without issues
Decreased loading times
Install from disc games almost instant

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Speed on the ps4 is great but nowhere near what it could be. This of course is no fault of the SSD it is a limitation of the PS4 not supporting sata3.

This drive will not allow the PS4 to come in and out of rest mode unless you deselect the (allow applications to suspend in rest mode) option under settings. Once you do this is seems to work fine.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent option!

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: - Considerable performance. (Was absolutely surprised at the performance of this drive)
- Rivals (often exceeds) "better" products on the market.
- Spent some time testing this drive against a couple other 'same' class and 'better' class SSDs while using applications that ranged from graphics to video, etc. In almost every case, the performance paralleled or exceeded alternatives.
- Far exceeded the performance of another <unnamed> brand of 'high performance' enterprise grade SSD drive.

Cons: - Minimal inclusion of "extras" - although not necessarily a "con" as the price becomes "the drive" and not the extras.
- Only potential 'con' would be that the drive does need/want TRIM enabled (vs. having a built-in garbage collection function)

Other Thoughts: - Based on performance, only concern would be around longevity - a remains to be seen aspect.
- Seriously raises the bar for consumer expectations of what 'performance' should be for an SSD drive at a price point.
- Based on every to date, would strongly recommend this drive to anyone that is looking for a ~1TB SSD for a standard workstation.
- Given experience and price point, would consider an array of these drives for anyone who needs massive storage, very high I/O, for such things as video editing and the like.

- *huge* kudos to OCZ on this drive's performance to capacity.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent SSD

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: Excellent performance all around. Corsair includes a drive adapter and mounting hardware making installation easy and straightforward. Sped up my games 10 fold after moving them onto the SSD.

Cons: Power consumption is a little high with the 960GB drive compared to other SSDs that are in my system.

Other Thoughts: I really have no complaints about this drive. It is an excellent choice for the size and price. I look forward to using this drive for a long while.

5 out of 5 eggsOCZ Vector180 VS Samsung 850 Evo

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: +SPEED Based on similar competitors the OCZ Vector180 does great
+Feels more solid then other ssds

Cons: -Price though faster than some other SSD’s it costs a bit more
-weight, though not that big of issue it is about 2x weight of Samsung 850 evo
-size when formatted 894gb vs 931gb from Samsung 850 evo 1Tb

Other Thoughts: First impressions: The packaging is similar to other brand of SSD’s that I have seen over the past, nothing extra ordinary. Though OCZ does give the user a bracket adapter, I did not have chance to use it as my case fits SSD’s just fine without an adapter bracket. The very first thing that I noticed as I picked up the package was the weight, but at first I thought it was the bracket, then I picked up a Samsung 850 EVO and noticed that the OCZ was 2x the weight! This did give the OCZ a more solid feel then the Samsung. Otherwise there are no other physical differences. Going into what most care is the performance. The test was done with Samsung 850 EVO 1TB and the OCZ Vector 180 1TB SSD. I did test my boot drive the Samsung 840 Pro, it performed pretty close to the 850 EVO, it did better in reads then writes, but overall score 850 Evo won.

So in a conclusion the OCZ drive blows the 850 EVO. OCZ Vector180 - Read: 449 Write: 462 Total: 1148 vs Samsung 850 Evo - Read: 294 Write: 301 Total: 759 What you miss in the OCZ about 37Gb this is when formatted. The test was done with both formatted drives holding exact same data and being optimized in windows 10 pro. Benchmark was AS SSD 1.8.5636.37293. This drive is amazing in speeds as seen vs the 850 Evo, the problem is that you would miss out on 37Gb and pay a bit more, when compared to the Samsung 850 Evo. Though 1Tb drives do tend to run expensive for some reason.

5 out of 5 eggsGood performance, PFM+, advanced return policy

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: + 5 year ShieldPlus warranty! - advanced replacement

+ 550 MBps (Seq. read) and 530 MBps (Seq. write)

+ Basically 100,000 IOPS 4K Random Read/Write

+ Includes desktop adapter bracket

+ Includes a large tantalum capacitor in case of power failure to prevent corrupt table data

+ Intuitive toolbox software suite, a.k.a. SSD Guru

+ Improved latency

+ Performance unaffected, regardless if reading/writing compressible or incompressible data.

+ 1GB of DRAM

Cons: - Poor lower queue-depth performance compared to competition, excels at QD16.

- Draws higher power at idle compared to competition; nearly 1 watt

- High variation in performance.

Other Thoughts: I still sport 2x OCZ Vertex 4's (256GB) in RAID0 in my desktop for the past few years. I also own the Vector 256GB and have owned the Arc 120GB - up until a power failure caused it to brick. I have owned many OCZ products over the last decade so quite familiar with their products.

One thing that annoys me regarding many drive manufactures is their lack of 'advanced return' policy; at the same time you are sending them a 'dead' drive they are sending you your replacement. While this would be expected in the enterprise environment, it is still as important for consumers to quickly get back up and running. Nice to see OCZ adopting this policy.

Some quick bench-marking results:

Avg seq. read: 347.6MBps
Avg seq. write: 368.3MBps
Avg 4k rnd read: 495.4MBps
Avg 4k rnd write: 484.8MBps

I eventually swapped my Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD for this drive in one of my ESXi boxes due to the fact that it has the built-in capacitor and that it has twice the storage size.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat ps4 Hdd upgrade

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: Great build quality. Comes with an adapter plate. I already had 2 ssd's in my computer so for this product I went with putting it in my ps4 to see what type of performance gains i get. I'll be the first to tell you that I'm very excited to have this in my ps4. Load up times weren't cut in half they were shattered. Rest mode start up is instant. full shut down is about 10 seconds from 35 seconds. Full start up from shut down is about 12 seconds from about 30 seconds. Drive storage is about double now. Comes with a one time use clone code. Game installs are almost instantaneous. Game updates are instant once downloaded.

Cons: price kinda hurts a bit.

Other Thoughts: If you have a backup storage device I recommend using it for restoring your ps4 or else set aside 2 days to re-download everything.

5 out of 5 eggsSpeedy, capacity, price

This review is from: OCZ Vector 180 2.5" 960GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) VTR180-25SAT3-960G

Pros: Speed--I did a clean installation of 64-bit Windows 10 Pro, and I was quite impressed with how quickly the job went. Normally when I install an operating system, I have time to go grab a sandwich and some brewski while waiting for the installation to finish. Not this time, though. The installation was over and done with before I knew it. Boot-up into Windows 10 is almost instantaneous, and performance is snappy.

Capacity--I have to confess that I haven't kept up very well with the SSD market, and I wasn't aware that they are now available with near one-Terabyte capacities. It was a pleasant surprise, since my job requires me to create lots of space-hogging virtual machines.

Price--Although SSDs are still more expensive than conventional hard drives, this one is still less expensive than what the lower-capacity SSDs of only a few years ago were. Again, I was quite surprised, given that I haven't kept up with the SSD market.

Cons: Not really a con, but. . .

The 3 1/2 inch mounting plate isn't long enough to mount properly in a 3 1/2 inch drive bay. In my Dell, I have the front portion of the plate held in place by the drive bay mounting pins, but the back portion is just hanging down, since the plate doesn't reach to the rear mounting pins. Not a big deal though. It still works.

Other than that minor little quibble, it's all good.

Other Thoughts: If you're in the market for a new drive and feel the need for speed, you won't go wrong with this.
