Excellent buy
- Pros: Replaced a pair of 512MiB 3-3-3-8 units with this pair of 1GiB 2.5-3-3-6 in a nForce4 Standard, Socket-939, Athlon 64 3200+. Rock solid stable at 2.5-3-3-6 under Fedora Core 3 x86-64 (64-bit) and Windows XP Pro (32-bit) so far.
- Cons: At this price point, none, really.
Great memory but a word to the wise about shipping
- Pros: Just got my third set installed. G.Skill simply works and does it well in my G5. I'm up to 6 GB now and need one more set to fill up the slots. This helps a lot considering how I normally have Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and QuarkXPress open at the same time plus iTunes, Firefox, Thunderbird and Cyberduck sucking up space in one way or another. At 2 GB it's not so snappy but now this old machine has some new life breathed into it.
- Cons: Nil.
- Other Thoughts: For those who select the Egg Saver shipping method you might want to keep this in mind. It took five business days, seven overall, for my shipment to get to me. This is in comparison to the 2-3 days UPS takes to get the same shipment from the same origin to the same delivery address. The Egg Saver shipping option evidently utilizes a combination of DHL and the USPS and, in my opinion, it pretty much sucks.
According to the tracking info my package sat in one place for over three days at a facility approx. 80 miles from my home. Very typical of the postal service in my past experiences and frankly, I think that's rather silly. Also this shipment was sent in a simple bubble wrap lined envelope whereas past shipments of the same memory through UPS were packaged in a well-padded cardboard box. The packaging for the RAM was creased a bit but the contents were okay. At least the USPS didn't lose the package. Next time I'll pay for the UPS shipping option.
