2 out of 5 eggsYears of Disappointment

Pros: Boot time was quite a bit faster considering I purchased this in 2009. Part of a brand new rig and used as my OS drive exclusively.

Cons: Computer stuttered from day one. First I thought it was the fact that I was using Windows XP x64, but when I got Windows 7 it continued. I would experience stuttering opening documents, watching videos online, trying to watch anything using flash I would consider cruel and unusual punishment. The read and write times advertised were never consistent. Today I replaced this SSD with a Seagate Barracuda HD @ 7200 rpm's. Instantly faster in any and all ways, and my rig is finally performing as I had expected after three years.

Other Thoughts: I should've realized well before today that this SSD was the fault of my computer under performing. I always trusted G.SKILL products before, and now I know better. Will be switching out my G.SKILL RAM soon, as their quality control is severely behind the rest of the industry.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you are not fully satisfied with the SSD. It is strange you were having such problems. G.Skill solid state drives should not have any stuttering problems. Make sure the SATA mode is set to AHCI so the operating system can recognize the drive as an SSD. If you leave it to IDE mode, it will be treated as a regular platter drive.

G.Skill quality control standards are highest of the industry. Even so, not every single item will be problem free. By comparing NewEgg reviews, you will see that a very high percentage of G.Skill buyers will be extremely satisfied. You should have a much better experience next time. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

Pros: Excellent Drive, Fast on the read, not as fast on the write. I have not played around with the pages, or caching. I guess it has setting that are different per O/S. I haven't messed with it because it works very well. Oh, the better battery life is outstanding. Went from 2.5 hours(with old sata drive) to 5+ hours with SSD. Priceless...

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this drive for rough and rugged areas, and travels.

1 out of 5 eggsStuttering

Pros: It's fast, it's big, and it's cheap.

Cons: The first month was great, but now I have issues with the drive stuttering. The computer will just pause for a second or so then continue. This problem is especially bad if something is being copied onto the drive while I'm doing something else.

Other Thoughts: I'm running Windows 7 RC, and in one of the other ratings G.SKILL said in a "Manufacturer Response" that the stuttering issue "is a common issue with older operating systems. Most issues will be resolved with Windows 7." This is not the case. I have the stuttering issue and I'm running Windows 7.

Manufacturer Response:

Cons: 1st Generation SSD from G.SKILL

1 out of 5 eggs2nd Time around!!!!!

Pros: I returned the original for a replacement...the replacement showed up today and I installed it on my tablet. Same thing again!!!!! Why is it that I get the BSOD with this thing? I do (Windows+L) to lock my PC, when I come back to log back on I get BSOD!!!!!!

Cons: This has nothing to do with my other hardware! I have 3 other drives that perform perfectly well in this machine, so I don't want to hear about it being a problem with my tablet!

Other Thoughts: THIS DRIVE IS A PIECE OF JUNK! I HAVE RESPECTED GSKILL FOR A LONG TIME, BUT THIS DRIVE SUCKS!

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We apologize for the inconvenience. There must be a configuration issue with the drive going from sleep to active state. Please visit our Official G.Skill Forum for possible tweaks and solutions to your SSD performance.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Starter SSD

Pros: Super easy installation and easily compatible with Vista and Win 7. Very fast main OS drive. Games launch fast and zoning in MMO's is also very quick. Recommended if you only do one thing on your computer at a time (one browser window, one game)...more than that will eventually start degrading your performance.

Cons: Its only good for an OS drive. Even the worst of them start off excellent but with a few months of decent use you start to come into issues. 5 months after purchase I started getting system wide stuttering. Opening up my usual MMO and a browser (and in some cases just two browsers) started creating issues as the controller couldn't keep up with the demand placed on it. The drive did not fail but the pregnant pauses it created as various part of the OS had to wait for the drive to respond due to being backed up. If you search on SSD's you'll find support suggestions that aren't a lot of help. Eventually delays to writing to the drive got so bad that it started affecting my games as things didn't get written to disk in a timely fashion.

Other Thoughts: Disable Superfetch and pagefiles, otherwise you will age this drive prematurely. Later models of SSD's have a trim tool to help restore performance. But this model the only way to restore it is to quick format the drive, which can be disastrous if its your OS drive.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We apologize for the inconvenience. For this SSD drive, we do have certain tweaks to help enhance the performance. Please email us for the detailed instructions. If you have any further questions or issues, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to assist you.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: This sdd is really fast, especially coming from a standard hdd. Your OS will boot in record time and apps will load almost instantly. So whats the problem...? JMicron

Cons: After about 3-4 months of usage, you'll begin to notice the annoying freezes. It stops working for a few seconds at a time and for no reason. I did some research online and its pretty well known now that the controller is bad and causes this issue.

Other Thoughts: I contacted the G Skill customer support about this issue. Id like to replace it, but whats the point if they send me the same sdd with the same controller and the same issue. It would just mean a lot of wasted time backing up files. I asked if I could swap for something without this controller. Needless to say I haven't heard from them. Really soured me on purchasing from them in the future.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We apologize for the inconvenience. This is a common issue with older operating systems. Most issues will be resolved with Windows 7. If you have any further questions or issues, feel free to contact us.

3 out of 5 eggsFast but...

Pros: This booger is really really fast, and I love it. It's really small, ideal for laptops that use SATA.

Cons: SSDs are still very unstable. I have been experiencing this instability a lot over the last few months. I have done tons of different types of HDD tests and scan disks to find some sort of resolve for this issue. This type of drive is not suitable for putting an OS on. This type of drive will just vanish at a moments notice and the only fix for an undetermined amount of time is to power cycle the computer. That's right this thing will vanish, no C drive there until you reboot and it could fix it for a day or 20 mins, maybe a week. I am having to go back to a real HDD because of this issue.

Other Thoughts: All in all, this is a great drive but not suitable for the use with any OS. It has a mini USB port on it and makes for a great external drive or a backup hot-swap drive.

2 out of 5 eggs2nd review - 6 months

Pros: Noiseless, doesnt run hot like platter drives. Works nicely for the most part (see Cons).

Cons: I regret buying this thing. I have only used this with windows XP. Initially I was so happy & excited ("Hey I got a SSD hard drive!"...). Now I am going to switch back to good old platter drives. The speed is nice SOMETIMES, but it also makes my pc hangs for a few seconds from time to time. It does NOT crash, just hangs and then clears up. It really is not horrible by any means, but it does this enough for me to wish I never bought it.

Toms hardware did a report that says SSD's do not even use less power than regular 2.5" hard drives. Jeez.

Other Thoughts: Maybe like the guy said below, maybe it would work better with other operating systems. Maybe I'll try it in my laptop which runs Vista, and report back on that.
