2 out of 5 eggsBack up your system!

Pros: Works most of the time when you have it going. Installed windows very quickly.

Cons: when you hit it with numerous reads you will notice laggyness. Mine has recently failed after 36 days of usage! Everyone who owns one of these please back your info up daily!

Other Thoughts: Since it is past 30 days newegg will not allow me to RMA it through them after spending a decent amount of money i would expect more from newegg. Now i have to deal with the horrid english speaking people of g.skill!

Thanks Newegg........

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

Depending on which operating system you are using, it may affect the performance of the drive. For example, Windows 7 is optimzed for SSD use while older versions of XP may cause delays. Also, we have tweaks to enhance the performance of the drive. Please refer to this link for further details: http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=675

Since you are beyond the 30 day NewEgg period, we will be more than glad to exchange your SSD drive for a new replacement. Please visit our RMA page for complete procedures: http://www.gskill.com/rma.php

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our good English speaking people of G.Skill.

3 out of 5 eggsExpensive storage

Pros: It works. Put into my Toshiba Satellite laptop and runs pretty fast. Starts up fast from log on screen to all applications loaded. Actual computer boot up to the log on screen still takes a while.

Cons: Runs real slow and hangs if you are trying to do more than one operation at a time. ie: Multiple read or writes. Writes 700MB of 1GB in a few seconds then can take over a minute just to write the last 300MB. Have to make a lot of changes and tweaks and changes to my Vista system to try and improve the performance.

Other Thoughts: Running Vista Home Premium 32bit. With 4GB ram. Well ~3.5GB. Loads single applications fast. But trying to do more than one read or write operation at a time can seriously slow things down and hangs.

2 out of 5 eggsnot a great drive

Pros: Fast Booting, XP boots less than 10 seconds, fast reads, data is ok

Cons: Slow writes not only that often times when I am on a website the unit will just lock in write mode. Outlook OST - forget it, the system will be writting forever.

Other Thoughts: Ok I am running XP SP3 with 4GIGS of RAM and T9500 CPU, overall I am not very Impressed. My system boots very fast but the writes is not worth it. I hope to get a better unit.

1 out of 5 eggskneecaps Linux performance w/Adaptec controller

Pros: Fast reads. As long as you're not writing anything to the disk, it works well.

Cons: Random write performance is bad. OK for web browsing, terrible for a development machine. I bought four and thought that with an Adaptec 5805 512MB caching RAID controller in a RAID 0, I'd be able to get the manufacturer-advertised write throughput.

Man, was I wrong. My Linux system (i7 920, 12GB RAM), is rendered unusable during a Linux kernel compile, or even just while copying a large file. I can't move the mouse, and the system hangs for 10-30 seconds at a time.

No amount of tweaking has solved this problem, including the configuration of:

1.) I/O scheduling algorithm (deadline or noop).
2.) I/O queue depth (per-LUN and per-drive).
3.) Read-ahead throttling.
4.) Limit number of adapter control blocks.
5.) Adapter I/O timeout.
6.) Stripe size.
7.) Toggling AHCI.
8.) Various other driver options.

According to Adaptec, this problem is due to very slow response times from the hard disk (Google adaptec answer aacraid scsi hang, and see the first two hits).

Other Thoughts: So, I have spent $1,000 on disks that were advertised as high-performance that are terrible for doing real work. Certainly with a good controller, I expected performance approaching what was advertised. I get about 1/4 of advertised write speeds, and the system can't do anything that approaches that limit. I'd be better off with one spinning SATA disk. I wish I had been warned by the manufacturer. I would have gladly paid extra to avoid one month of frustration. Now I am looking at another month of delay while I deal with the RMA/upgrade process.

I hope to RMA these drives to G.Skill and replace them with 128GB Falcons (for a price, I'm sure). If G.Skill helps me to upgrade these drives, I will be sure to let everyone know that G.Skill supports their customers 100%. Hopefully, they will respond to my RMA request soon. Otherwise, I will be sure to follow-up here.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Worked exactly as advertised, saved power and was very fast.

Cons: As you might guess from my use of the past tense, the drive died after five months of ownership, costing me all of my data. G.Skill has been unreachable by phone, and I am now trying to have it replaced under warranty by email, though I am yet to receive a response.

1 out of 5 eggsNeed Another

Pros: Worked very fast, saved power, generally worked as advertised--right up until it died altogether.

Cons: The drive died after about 5 months of use. It simply died altogether, costing me all of my data.

Other Thoughts: G.Skill is virtually impossible to contact by phone. Hopefully their e-mail response is better.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns FAST!

Pros: FAST! It's fast and it's worth every penny. I'm using this in my desktop PC along with a Phenom II Quad core processor and 8 GB of ram. Once the mother board is done doing all of it's junk Windows 7 Ultimate is completely booted and ready to be used in less than 15 seconds. No installation problems.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's physically sized to fit in a laptop. I was too lazy to buy some adapters so I just plugged the thing in and it's sitting on the bottom of my case in front of a fan. SSD's aren't sensitive to vibrations so I assume it will be fine.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat at first...

Pros: Works well initially.

Cons: After a couple months or so I've started to notice the awful write performance in OS X. Boot time is still fast, but I've disabled Safari's cache to avoid the stuttering as much as possible. It's helped a little bit.

Other Thoughts: Performance was so good initially that I ordered a 2nd drive for my fiance after a few weeks of use. Now I feel like a double sucker. Thanks G.Skill!!

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Came in proper packaging
Very good read speeds
Very fast random access speeds (destroys any rotary drive)
No heat
No Noise
It's green
Shaved several seconds off my boot time (vs my deceased WD Raptor 150)

Cons: Price for the capacity is very high, leaving Solid State Drives with more desirable capacities completely outside of my reach.
Write performance seems unimpressive.
Writes sometimes cause the system to choke (this was rather bad with cifq queueing, it's more tolerable with deadline because the pauses don't last nearly as long (ie: only a second or two)) (Linux)
Could use more screw holes to help make it more compatible with things such as 2.5" to 3.5" converters, but seeing as it doesn't vibrate I can just duct tape it to my case I guess.

Other Thoughts: Lifetime of the drive is yet to be seen. Might not be as long as I like seeing as it's around 4/5 of the way full from day one, so most of my writes will be on that remaining 1/5, presumably.
Played a major role in quieting my build. Noisiest components are now my Scythe S-FLEX fans, and everybody knows how quiet they are :)
Might want to get another for my laptop
