4 out of 5 eggsInteresting Product

Pros: I have 2 of these Titans running in a RAID-0 array on an EVGA x58 board (ICH10R). I have benchmarked this array with both the 4k and 128k block sizes.

With the 128k block size I receive 280 mb/s for large sequential reads and 140 mb/s for writes.

Cons: Using the 128k block sizes, the 4k reads and writes hurt badly, at 15 mb/s and 2.5 mb/s respectively. This is only noticeable when writing many small files and is rarely noticable. I may attempt to remedy this with a PCI-E SATA II RAID controller with 256mb of RAM to see if it alleviates these small writes.

Using the recommended 4k block size in the RAID array made the small writes much faster, but bottlenecked my large sequential reads/writes to 60 mb/s. Other MLC drive tweaks recommend larger block sizes, which really seemed to help these drives as well. I am not certain why GSKILL recommends the neutered settings.

Other Thoughts: I used the following tweaks on my Vista x64 Ultimate to get the most out of the drives:
Disable pagefile
Disable superfetch
Disable disk indexing
Disable system restore
Disable disk shadow service
Disable scheduled defrag
Enabling write caching with advanced performace

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear customer

We apologize for this inconvenience. 4k block size is recommend for single SSD. For RAID setup, it is not recommend to use 4k block size. it depends on raid card cache size and how many SSD you put into array. the tweaks you have there is very good and exactly what we recommend.

Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsNice Drive

Pros: Burst Speed, Temp

Cons: minimal cache

Other Thoughts: Temp is lower then my previous 5400 rpm drive in my laptop during sustained usage. Burst Speed is wonderful. Firefox loads exceptionally fast. I am happy with my purchase but I think the drive should come with a suggestion guide has to how to get the most out of the drive - turn off swap file, turn off superfetch, turn off indexing make sure to use 4kb sectors. If you do these things the drive will last longer and the machines will have a snappier response. These "features" that Microsoft added to the OS cause the drives to be in constant use which is hard on the battery life and in this case the lifetime of the drive. Although these features were added to make the machine faster they cause the machine to be busy when you actually need it and you are left waiting. With this drive and those features turned off, the experience is amazing. I gave it four stars - lack of a advanced users guide to suggest the above and because the 16kb cache is insufficient for sustained throughput.

Thank you for your suggestion. We will pass this information to our management and make any necessary improvment.

5 out of 5 eggsCOOOOL

Pros: If your looking around for a cheaper SSD, but don't want to give up quality and performance look no more. I purchased (2) of these and set them in a RAID 0. I have been building computers for a very long time and I can honestly say that this is one best upgrades for the price. To truely unlock the potential of these drives there will be some tweaking you will need to do, but as far as right out of the box you will not be disppointed.

Cons: Size (GB)....Give it time and you will see prices fall and the size of the drives increase.

Other Thoughts: Amazing setup....Buy (2) set to RAID 0, this will be C:\. Depending on what you use this machine for, buy (2) 7200RPM HDD's for storage (D:\) set to RAID 5 or 0+1. Install games and applications to the C: and all other non-critical apps, music, photos, etc to D:\. You will see a performace decrease when access Data on the D:\ compaired to the C:, but this is understandable.

2 out of 5 eggsHiccups will kill you

Pros: It installed without any problems, and I had no issues with getting going, but after I installed the OS...

Cons: Every install (I am a developer so I am installing a lot of MS tools that I have installed again again before) seems to take forever with these long hiccups and pauses where nothing happens, for seconds, sometime even 60 seconds. Now, after I have installed everything and I am back to the config that matches my previous 64GB SSD I am using the drive under normal conditions. I paid the extra for this drive based solely on the speed it boasts, but please beware, at times it is fast. But maybe 50%-60% of the time there are these long hiccups, both reading and writing. I've offloaded everything to a second hardrive (the VM paging, the restores, all that stuff) so the drive really only needs to handle OS and apps. But I am so disappointed I am going back to a non-SSD Hard Drive and giving up on this SSD altogether. The ones that work are too small, and the larger ones are too slow and buggy. Sorry, but this has wasted more time than it could ever have been worth.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear customer

try to format your SSD with small block size like 4k or 8k block. that will help to increase the performance. not sure what OS you use but if you want to how to change the registy, you can email us and get this info.

1 out of 5 eggsUtterly HOPELESS

Pros: Decent speed when not writing - 1 egg for not DOA

Cons: Superbly slow overally due to stuttering caused by JMicron controller - FYI please read recent SSD article on Anandtech webpage. The computer freezes for SECONDS every time you write some more data to this SSD. So much inferior to my other 80GB SSD.

Other Thoughts: Paid less from Newegg then sold for on auction.
Poor kid had no understanding just like most of the early SSD crowd.
Buy x25s or stay with Velociraptors for now.
I have a lot of GSkill memory sticks and loved them all.
These SSD's shuld be sold in China only. We really do not need that quality products here in US. Unfortunately there's so many cheap people who would buy something so bad for just little less...

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear customer

We apologize this inconvenience. try to format any SSD with 8k or 4k blocks. it can help to increase its performance. As SSD tech improves, this problem will be solved

5 out of 5 eggsSuper fast reads and writes.

Pros: We got one of these at work because we needed a drive that works above 10k feet. Part of my job is to evaluate storage systems for real-time data acquisition systems. This is the fastest single disk I've ever tested. We got 160 MB/sec writes and 195 MB/sec reads. We tested in a Dell Vostro 200. We also bought an OCZ Apex SSD drive and tested that with disappointing results. To be fair, we tested the OCZ in a laptop that only had SATA 1 (150 MB/sec max) and the G.SKILL test machine had SATA 2 (300 MB/sec max).

Cons: Although it's a lot cheaper than it used to be, SSD is still very expensive.

Other Thoughts: If you need ultimate speed, this is the drive to get.

5 out of 5 eggsFast

Pros: This is the first SSD I have owned and I am very impressed. I had to perform some OS tweaks to get the full potential out of this but it is fast. The boot time on my system is taking a third of the time it did before.

Cons: Price and it does not come with any brackets for mounting in a desktop. I currently have it sitting on top of my floppy drive.

3 out of 5 eggsNot Ready For Prime Time

Pros: A tad faster than the Hitachi 7200rpm drive I replaced in an Asus G2 notebook. Easy install.

Cons: Not $349.00 faster than the Hitachi. Tried all the tweaks from all the forums. The best read speeds I could get in HD tune with a fresh install of Vista Home Premium is 119mb/s.

Other Thoughts: Noticing a few stutters but not enough to cause any grief. Satisified but not overly impressed. If you're replacing an old 5400 rpm drive then go for it. Read the forums on these drives-especially OCZ!

1 out of 5 eggsI retract my 4 Egg rating below

Pros: Check out my earlier review. It was the first one listed here after only having these drives a few days.

Cons: You see a GSkill response to many of the posts in here and they always say to contact support or go to their forums. Problem is, when you do, nothing happens. Go to their support site forums ( http://www.gskill.us/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=9 ) and read for yourself, how well they support their product. Short answer is, they don't. The forum is full of comments about contacting support and hearing nothing. The so called techs within the forum, are noobs who barely seem to know the difference between an SSD and a memory stick. The only real support you can find on Gskill SSDs is via other users, referencing OCZ forums for detailed setup and tweaks to get the most out of the SSDs. Good Job GSkill !!

Other Thoughts: I highly suggest anyone looking to buy a SSD, stay clear of Gskill until they make a commitment to this product like OCZ has. I am just sick that I didn't give my money to OCZ when purchasing since they seem to get it. GSkill however, doesn't and shouldn't be rewarded IMHO.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear customer

thank you for your information, however, we really not suggest customer to do all kinds tweak and changing the register. lag and stuttering problem is not like change some register values or disable enable some service can 100% fix it. specially some customers might not fully understande how to do it, and might cause OS crash.
