1 out of 5 eggsGskill has terrible failure rate

Pros: They work fine (if they work at all). In December we purchased 131 8GB kits. Seven are dead (failing multiple pass memtest / etc....) . I suspect they outsource production to a low quality contract manufacturer

Cons: Very very very high failure rate. Most people don't realize the failure rate because most people do not buy in bulk. 7 failures out of 131 units is failure rate greater than 5% - which is atrocious.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you are experiencing a high failure rate. There are many customers that purchase in bulk, including OEM and system builders, because the G.Skill failure rate is very low. This memory kit is above standard, so make sure to configure settings in BIOS/EFI. Without the proper settings, the system can use different settings upon each boot up, and that can cause memory corruption/failure. If the motherboard supports XMP/DOCP, make sure that is enabled so it can automatically detect and set the performance values of the RAM. Otherwise, it is necessary to manually input the DRAM frequency, timings, and voltage for this kit. If you would like a plug and play memory kit, you will need to look into DDR3-1333 CL9 or DDR3-1600 CL11. With the memory configured properly, this memory kit is fast and reliable. The NewEgg reviews reflects a bulk sample size. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

1 out of 5 eggs1 stick Dead after 1 Week

Pros: One stick works great.

Cons: 1 of 2 sticks is totally dead.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear one module is not working properly. Send it in for RMA exchange and a replacement should work flawlessly. Once you have the new RAM installed, enable XMP/DOCP, or manually configure settings in BIOS/EFI, then the computer can run at full speed. With 8GB of DDR3-1600, the operating system will be nice and smooth even during heavy usage. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: Great price and quality product.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Windows stopped showing the full 16GB as usable. I've been playing with overclocking and that may have triggered something but I reset everything and Windows still shows 16GB (12GB Useable).

I'm sure it is something I did in the BIOS but I have not been able to regain the 4 missing GBs.

1 out of 5 eggsL=low

Pros: non now trust in brand went way down

Cons: all g skill with a L prefix means low quality chips used

Other Thoughts: from g skill support
Dear Customer
Dear Customer

Yes, doesn't mean L is low quality, it just means the chips is not as good as other ones like M and H.

In general, lower latency is better if the frequency and voltage is also the same, so you will notice that with the different letters.

H will have best timings like DDR3-1600 CL7, M will have 7 or 8, and L will have 9 or 10.

L RAM is still better than standard, it is great for gaming, but extreme overclockers typically prefer H because they need maximum frequency and performance.

Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Thank you

[don't not as good =lower quality??]

[is this memory sold as overclockers memory??]

what the heck am I buying here??

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We can clarify your confusion. L does not mean low quality chips are used. In fact, generally the same chips are used, but the rated specifications are different. If you have not noticed, XL models are CL9, XM models are CL8, and XH models are CL7. All G.Skill memory modules can be overclocked, there is no such thing as low quality chips being used. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.
