Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat ram

Pros: no issues at all. completely stable if you are using the XMP speed profiles. the ram looks good as well.

Cons: the attached ram coolers are a little tall. if you are using large air-cooled CPU coolers especially in push-pull you may have issues fitting the ram under. solution: buy one of the ready made water cooling kits from corsair or coolermaster.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Works great using Intel XMP profile for over a year

Cons: I don't OC ram and with this speed, there is very little reason to do so for my rig

Other Thoughts: I bought a pair a year ago during a build and had no issues. I decided to bump up to 32GB and bought another pair with no issues using the Intel XMP profile on a Asus Hero VI, 4770K, and GTX 780ti. Heaven

1 out of 5 eggs25% Success rate

Pros: Looks great, great response times.

Cons: I ordered a pack of two 8 sticks. only one worked. so after dealing with newegg support (who wanted me to pay for a second purchase and then get a refund at a later date) i was able to get a second set sent to me on the condition i would be charged for it if i failed to return the first pack within 30 days. I was waiting at the door when it arrived, went to my room to replace the sticks... low and behold NEITHER stick in the replacement pack worked. so now im writing this review knowing that tomorrow i have to take the working stick out of my computer and go without my beautiful 2100$ build for two weeks while i wait for a refund so i can buy working ram. Not saying i wont shop newegg again, but im definitely considering that option. And gskill...dear sweet gskill.... 75%failure rating is too high to risk further investment.

5 out of 5 eggs4 Sticks migrating to new box with 8

Pros: These sticks run well in a HAF X Case with a MPower MSI Z77 board. Has been in operation without errors for two plus years under a cruicial Ballistix cooler.

Had two sticks from a matched DIMM 4 kit and bought two more to have 8 modules all together that will be going into a Thor V2 case under two separate Crucial Ballistix Coolers on the new motherboard designed to support 4 way SLI. It may not be the best of boards (MSI Big Bang II,) however it is one of the few that allows me to remain in DDR3 to max out the capacity to 64 gig in total while avoiding the 1600 dollar expense in equivalent DDR4 Ram which I cannot take a chance on right now.

Cons: You must have liquid cooling. To clear the space around the CPU Socket to accommodate these Ram Modules being very tall.

I am using a Corsair iH100e also for two years, the Trident RAM is going to be migrated to a Socket 2011 board that will feature a 360mm radiator cooling kit from Thermaltake so that there is room around the Socket and CPU for these Tall Modules.

I do not have any specific con, other than to state that I am frequently running Arma 2, Arma 3 and BFBC through BF3 and BF 4 without errors or drop outs and expect the same no fuss performance when the sticks go from 4 at 32 gig to 8 at 64 gig.

Other Thoughts: Ram is something that you can maximize when it is CHEAP like these Trident Rams are now. They are a decent RAM and if you can get the Bios to run them at 2400 like they are supposed to, then all is well.

Getting into DDR4 ram to try and keep up with the Joneses at 1600 dollars with similar module and overall capacity and performance simply is not worth the cost right now. The prices will and eventually must drop to around 200 dollars for a pack of 4 channel DDR4 ram to be worth buying someday.

You are building a computer, not buying a car.

The Ram has again had been provided with ballistix cruicial cooling fans and I have had nothing but joy over them.

Power supply is a Seasonic 1250 Gold x-series so that while pricey, it will not fail to provide a good quality power to the RAM as they do work inside the machine.

The ram timings are not extreme like say 5-5-5-8 or something crazy. I do not do it like that. I generally keep around 1.5 volts to 1.65 volts with nice easy traditional timings of 10 something something and something. That way I can expect it to be compatible with whatever board I throw into the new build.

Again, it will be a challenge more and more to stay with the DDR3's as all the Retailers in the USA phase it out in favor of more money and profits for the DDR4.

You don't need to worry when you have this much ram potential inside your machine. There is literally no issue such as insufficient ram space, too slow ram or too fast ram or bios XMP this or that.

Enjoy them and forget they were there. They are trouble free with the right boards.

5 out of 5 eggsCompatible with big coolers

Pros: XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) So easy to setup in the BIOS. 3 clicks done.

So far so good with this ram, I seen a noticeable difference in response times opening and closing programs.

Cons: None, you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: This is dual channel ram, make sure you board isn't single channel, and if it's quad channel, there is a kit you can buy of the same product.

5 out of 5 eggsG.Skill Trident X 2400MHz

Pros: G.Skill continues to be the best memory I have purchased. This is my second set of G.Skill memory. The first set (Ares) ran at the rated 2400MHz with no problems. For my next build, I went with Corsair's Vengeance Pro series because I liked the colors. They did not run at the XMP 2400MHz settings without causing errors in Memtest. I replaced that kit with this Trident X kit and ran this kit through the ringer and it has passed all the tests with flying colors.

Cons: Not a single thing!

Other Thoughts: I put a price alert on this item utilizing Newegg's price alert feature and I was able to purchase this kit for the absolutely best price I could ever imagine.
