Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Definitely the best memory sticks i could find at this price point. Fast speeds with a lower cas latency than other brands at this frequency. Color scheme is great! Matched perfectly with my red theme and has detachable heatsinks.

Cons: Tall heatsink but as stated they can be removed. Heatsinks were not a problem with my H105 cpu cooler.

Other Thoughts: G. Skill is great and will continue to buy their products in the future

5 out of 5 eggsGskill still a no brainer

Pros: Perfect build quality, superior performance, looks awesome, split heatsink for low profile use, 10 latency.

Cons: None, got this on sale.

Other Thoughts: Setup took 2 mins, set xmp profile and frequency and timings stuck right away. Ran 3 runs with memtest86+, zero defects. Buy gskill if you need your memory fast, stable and great to look at.

5 out of 5 eggsStill loving it!

Pros: Have this running great at 2400mhz for just over a year now, absolutely no problems at all. Plugged them in, booted up, set to 2400 & boot again, ALL DONE.

Looks great too.

5 out of 5 eggsProbably the best 2400 mhz 2x8gb ram on the market for Haswell

Pros: I did a lot of research before I bought this kit. Basically every review I could find on this set was positive. Runs at advertised speeds and timings simply by selecting XMP profile 1 and setting the voltage to 1.65 volts. Yes, 1.65 volts is safe with Haswell. I ran 20 passes of LinX and ran Memtest overnight without any errors. I am using a Gigabyte Z97X UD5H motherboard and I7 4790k with all cores boosting to 4.4 at 1.10 volts. YMMV with a different setup.

Cons: Yes the ram is tall but it still fits under my Kingston ram cooler. I know a ram cooler isn't necessary but I already had it and I am using a H60 so there isn't much air moving over the ram. I figure the cooler can't hurt and it looks good in my case. If the ram is too tall for your setup the top cooling fin is easily removable.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good!

Pros: These things look gorgeous! Quick too. Started nudging my benchmark scores before I even OC'd them. Temps stay low.

I have had Zero issues so far. I have only set them up to 2100mz so I'm not pushing these to their limits but they have been rock solid stable since day one!

Cons: For me, I have had NO issues with these but I could say - Price... It's dropped a nice $40-$50 since my pruchase just 4 months shy of a year ago.

Kinda tall? but isn't bigger better?

Other Thoughts: Honestly, to those who are 1Egg'ing these because one stick went wonkey or was DOA and it was inconvenient to replace... Grow up... It happens! At least wait to post a review until you receive the new set and can actually test them! That's at least a 3Egg review, not 1...

To those who had 2 bad sets in a row... I'm sorry. That's not kew... I accept your 1Egg review.

Seriously thinking another 2 sticks are duo for the current price!

4 out of 5 eggsgo fast goodies

Pros: They look amazing and run at almost exactly as advertised. Usually stick around 2377mhz or so which is to be expected. Sturdy build quality and trust me, you need that when smashing these bad boys into your motherboard.

Cons: This may or may not be a ram issue but I do get memory initializing errors from time to time. Doesnt cause any issues so it may just be something buggy with my mobo. The only real thing that I can say about these sticks. Not quite running as advertised but 20 or so mhz difference is negligible and cant be noticed.

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear you like the heat speader design of the Trident X series. It is one of the most popular on NewEgg. The heavy duty quality is able to withstand and disperse heat under extreme overclocking conditions and long term stress testing. With the proper configuration in BIOS, this memory will have no problem reaching the rated specifications of DDR3-2400 and higher. RAM operates exactly at the values the user inputs, so if it is currently at an irregular frequency of DDR3-2377, you may have used the auto-overclock feature to set things up. Instead, enable XMP and that will allow the motherboard to detect and set the proper values for the RAM to run at full speed. You should not experience any errors, so if you continue to have a problem, please let us know and we will be glad to help. Once the correct settings are input, the computer should be very fast and stable.

Thank you

3 out of 5 eggsAnother review update

Pros: I already completed a review for this product. This is an update because I've had some issues. I'm still working on the issues and my RMA this set of memory. The problems is @ 2400 with XMP profile set I get an occasional BSOD. About one every two weeks mostly coming out of sleep S3 state. Setting the speed to 1866 stops the BSOD. My old 1866 memory never had one BSOD.

Cons: Like I said still working on the issue. Will try upping the voltage

Other Thoughts: Other than this issue I've had no others. The memory passes all stress tests including Prime95 for 4 hours.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We will be glad to help with this issue. Sounds like the RAM may not be receiving sufficient boot up Voltage coming out of S3 sleep state. The actual supplied Voltage is generally lower than what is stated in BIOS/EFI, so with the DRAM Voltage set to 1.65V, it may only be getting 1.63V or lower upon start up until the system adjusts and compensates with added load. Boost the DRAM Voltage a notch higher and that should solve the issue. If you continue to have a problem, please contact us directly and we will make sure your computer is fast and smooth under any circumstance.

Thank you
