Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsFast ram

Pros: very nice ram, overclocked very well and runs like a dream.

Cons: my motherboard did not want to boot with this ram on the first try. Even though it was list on the approved list it had to be configured manually before it would post correctly.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte gaming 5 board with i7 4790K and runs like a champ overclocked.

5 out of 5 eggsRock Solid Fast Memory

Pros: This Memory loves my ASRock Extreme 6 MB paired with the Intel 4790k , settings 4.8Ghz at 2.7volts Adaptive using the awesome rock solid Liqtech 240 Cooler set max rpm 1300 which is very quiet, Gelid Extreme thermal paste 24/7 running Prime 95, Aida 64, cinbench, Realbench all cores temps never exceeded 84 celsius, with override voltage set to 4.00 the core thermal throttled but the system remained 100% Stable the sweet spot I found was 3.30volts with all cores stable with temps mid 70 to low 80 Celsius the memory set to Xmp Auto 100% Stable and fast.

Cons: I have no complaints Gskill Memory has performed as advertised any extra is a bonus, for me, it's about stability and that's what Gskill has always given me, if system uptime is important to you this memory is a no brainer buy it now you won't regret it . However, if you want to overclock this heck out of your Memory and stability does not matter, than seek another brand that claims to be able to handle the OC torture specs. LOL Thanks

Other Thoughts: I have very good ventilation in my case, I do not recommend stock coolers for the test I listed above, because it could damage your system and like JAYZTWOCENTS said"It's a Freakin Home Run!" the Liqtech 240 cooler is no joke. Every system may is unique and my settings were obtained by carefully changing setting a little at a time , so OC at on risk and Leave this memory on xmp auto it keeps up perfectly stable at 4.8 benchmarks pass some Xeons at this speed and the temps are well under the 100 celsius max for this CPU Note: I have 850watt EVGA PSU that delivers very stable voltage which is very important for system stability when raising voltages to achieve good Overclocks. GOOD PARTS EQUAL BETTER PERFORMANCE, like building a winning race car!

5 out of 5 eggsGood RAM

Pros: Does what it should. Runs advertised speed, looks great doing it. No need to really worry about cas latency versus RAM speed. Running 1600mhz at cas 9 isn't much better (if at all) than 2400mhz at cas 10 like these are.

Good price, good product. I'm happy.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Worth buying. Quality product.

5 out of 5 eggsG.Skill all the way!

Pros: -Fast 2400MHz at a great value if you catch them on sale, this seems to be a sweet spot that won't limit Haswell overclocks in most cases.
-Low latencies, you can possibly even tighten them some.
-Easy X.M.P profiles, set and forget. If XMP #1 doesn't work, then XMP #2 should and vice versa.
-8GB DIMMs for a possible 32GB with two kits (though these are only tested/rated/guaranteed for 2-DIMM operation, I've never had an issue combining kits before. I wouldn't recommend overclocking to 1T command rate with 4 DIMMs though.)
-Solid feeling RAM, heatspreaders are heavy, very high quality and make good contact with the chips
-Removable top fins for large CPU heatsinks
-Lifetime warranty, and excellent G.Skill support.

Cons: -Doesn't seem to overclock past 2400MHz even with higher latency but this is to be expected nowadays. RAM is binned very tightly. Want faster, pay more. your mileage may vary, it could just be my CPU or secondary/tertiary timings.
-These are double sided/dual rank DIMMs, not really a con as most RAM is these days, especially with 8GB modules. I only mention this because some reviews mentioned single sided, which is probably the 2x4GB kits. Single sided/single rank has slightly lower latency since the memory controller can't access both banks simultaneously in same same clock cycle with 2 banks but in dual channel you have two interleaved 8GB banks basically, and the memory controllers should be smart enough to manage them well. I can't really see many single programs needing >8GB RAM access simultaneously and at this speed I doubt it would be an issue.

Other Thoughts: Bought this kit to replace my old 2133MHz G.Skill Ripjaws X for my Asus Z97 Haswell system, very pleased with it. I was able to lower to 10-12-11-31-1T @ 2400MHz with default 1.65v.

I'd heard this RAM really shines at 1.7v but I wasn't able to push 2600MHz at 11-13-13-35-2T 1.7v even with VCSSA, VCCIO, and VCDIO raised at stock 4790K clocks. I was hoping for 2600-2800 at decent latencies but I knew what I was buying so I can't fault the RAM for that. Overclocking is never guaranteed. G.Skill bins very tightly, but the latencies are a bit over-conservative for broad compatibility. Might work at 2600+ with 11-14-14-35 though.

I noticed my Asus board had pretty high secondary timings on "Auto" which I adjusted from reading the RAM's SPD. Passed 12hrs Memtest86+ with 10-12-11-31-1T with secondary timings manually set to G.Skill's SPD of 6-313-26-9-26-7 (tRRD tRFC tWR tRTP tFAW tWCL) but I'm using XMP #1 which I assume uses tighter tertiary timings. Not sure what to set tCKE to, but my board Auto'd to 6. I might need to raise timings again once I overclock my CPU.

Also, not having a 1600MHz profile is not really a con as someone else mentioned. I assume G.Skill didn't have room for it in SPD since they have 2 XMP profiles. I bet this would run fine at 9-9-9-24 or even 8-8-8-22 @ 1600MHz. Possibly even 7-7-7-20.
