If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

4 out of 5 eggsWorked well for a while but...

Pros: Fast Fast Fast
Worked right out of the box
Great fit for my case

Cons: I've had this running in my rig for about 1.5 years and 1 8GB stick just died. No OCing.

Wish I could buy a single stick somewhere??

5 out of 5 eggsGSKILL Trident Series 16GB DDR3 24400mhz

Pros: I have had these for over a year now, bought them on New egg. Worked great out of the box so I bought a second 16GB set for a total of 32GB.. These have worked great and never caused me any issues

Cons: None that I have found

Other Thoughts: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX, AMD 8350, Asus R9 280, 32GB Trident X memory, 1000watt power supply.. Set the RAM voltage to 1.65v and run with 10-10-10-31 1T timings at 2400mhz without issue.
I would recommend this memory to anyone.. For me it has done what I expect and that is to run without issues.

5 out of 5 eggs16GB Fast Ram

Pros: Great price $89
Runs at 2400mhz
Has heat spreaders
XMP profile sets the timings
Runs at suggested voltage of 1.650v
Made CPU heavy games run noticeably smoother, sounds strange but every game engine CPU reliant runs way better with the memory at 2400mhz

Cons: Did not run above 2000mhz on a z77 extreme4. Required the setting "INTERNAL PLL OVERVOLTAGE" to be enabled for the computer to boot with the ram set above 2000mhz. Google has little to no information on this setting and people are skeptical about it. I'd assume most people have it on auto so there is probably multiple people using this ram with that setting being enabled and not having any issues.

Other Thoughts: If you're going to buy this RAM make sure everything you have supports it. Check on both your motherboard's website and g.skills website to see compatible memory/motherboards that they tested to work with each other.

I have

ASRock z77 extreme4 bios p2.90
i7 3770k @ 4.2ghz
this ram
GTX 680 2GB
650w corsair psu

And it all seems to function well after enabling internal pll overvoltage. My pc does sound a bit weird on cold boots for like ten seconds but I'm pretty sure that was introduced when I updated my bios and not from the ram installation but who knows. Probably pushing this board to its limits with the hardware. Eventually I'll make a move over to the latest motherboards and processors when I have the financial and need to do so.

I do wish G.skill would note in the description that this RAM isn't tested on every z77 board, kind of feels like false advertising. You need to manually search if the RAM is compatible on the websites themselves as the information isn't displayed here. While many can just enable XMP and call it a day - others can't and that's the problem. Make sure you manually set the RAM voltage to 1.650v or lower if you can get away with it - don't leave it on auto voltage because there's a chance your motherboard may run it higher than that.

3 out of 5 eggsPlug and play

Pros: plugged them in and system boot up just fine running at 1333.

Cons: my DZ77GAL-70K has 2 presets to OC to 2400 and the board wont post. tried several settings mentioned in the reviews and still wont post over 1333. keep trying I guess.

Other Thoughts: I would still recommend.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Jonathan

We will be glad to help maximize the performance of your system. Unfortunately, the motherboard may be able to recognize the XMP Profile but it does not necessarily mean it is capable of it. Also, a K series CPU is necessary to have a shot at DDR3-2400. To test capabilities, enable XMP but reduce DRAM Frequency until the system can POST and boot properly. This will give us an idea of the starting point. Contact the G.Skill support team with hardware specifications and we will be glad to help. That particular motherboard may require manual tweaking to reach a high DRAM Frequency, but if you are willing to work with us, we can provide the knowledge and necessary changes you need to run higher than DDR3-1333.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Newegg customer service! Price matched saved me $40.00

Pros: After doing a lot of research I decided to buy this Ram along with all the other components needed for my new build. After buying this RAM and a Fractal R5 case yesterday I see today the ram is on sale for $10.00 less and the case is on sale for $20.00 less and free shipping. This represented a $40.00 reduction from what I paid yesterday. I called Newegg customer service and Dakota and May painlessly credited back my card the $30.00 difference and gave me a credit for the shipping of $9.99 in the form of a credit code. Apparently they don't price match the shipping but made an exception due to the amount I spent on this build. This just confirms why I buy all my computer equipment from Newegg over the past 10 years. KEEP UP THE GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE NEWEGG! YOU HAVE A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE!

Cons: None. I haven't received it yet

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Memory

Pros: fast memory with low latency. Matches my system color scheme of red and black! Now maxed out at 32gb.

Cons: Not really a con but many people do not seem to get the 2400 advertised speed, AND whine about it!!! This memory defaults to 1866 unless you go into the BIOS and set the XMP profile or manually input speed and timings. NO memory that I know of operates at the rated speed out of the box unless it is the base speed of the standard. I could be wrong but this is my experience. It is funny that some of the people that complain rate their tech experience so high! If they are so experienced, they should know this.

Other Thoughts: I rarely follow the QVL on the motherboards. I make sure the memory meets and does not exceed the memory standards: speed rating, error correction or not. I also install modules to allow upgrading later. I originally got a 2x8gb channel kit for $189 two years ago and just purchased a duplicate kit for $89. Also... it has a latency of 10 which allows faster loads. I had 1 module bad on the first shipment and I rarely have DOAs on anything purchased from Newegg. I had to RMA the whole kit but Newegg customer service is always great. They resolved it within 8 days from start to completion.

4 out of 5 eggsA good quality RAM kit with minimal fuss.

Pros: Installed onto an ASRock Extreme9 mobo, and have been using them ever since. No issues regarding the memory performance and reliability...however....

Cons: For some reason, I could not get this kit to run at full speed without manually changing the RAM settings in the BIOS from a slower setting, to the advertised maximum. After updating the BIOS for the mobo , I have not run into this issue again. Have done 2 clean installs since my initial upgrade in 2014.

Other Thoughts: Good RAM kit for what I paid at the time; even cheaper now with the intro of DDR4, among other factors. If you are in the market for DDR3 RAM, then this is a good set to invest in.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Lance

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the memory is working well in your AsRock Extreme 9 motherboard. This is extreme performance RAM, so it is necessary to manually configure settings in BIOS/EFI. Without doing so, the memory can only default to standard values of DDR3-1333 CL9. Once XMP is enabled or if you manually input settings, the system can operate at maximum performance. With 16GB of DDR3-2400, your computer will be capable of anything you put it to. This is one of the best DDR3 memory kits on the market. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsFlawless and fast!

Pros: - THE best dual-channel kit available for the price.
- Pairs perfectly with the new Broadwell cpu. IG performance relies heavily on RAM speed and 2400 C10 fits the bill nicely.
- Cool looking sticks!

Cons: - DDR4 is out now.

Other Thoughts: - No need to go beyond 2400 since that's the highest memory bandwidth for Haswell controllers. Anything faster than 2400, the bandwidth actually decreases. Look up the recent Corsair ddr3 vs ddr4 whitepaper for details.
