Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice & Fast

Pros: Rated at 2400, automatic OC to 2444. Stable, cool, great looking. No problems installing in new build.

Cons: No Cons

Other Thoughts: I don't touch an electronic component without an ESD strap on. If its installed or out of the package. I also make sure the RAM is thoroughly seated CAREFULLY. I had no issues with the packaging or the sharp fins, nothing broke or cracked or damaged in any way. I sometimes wonder if people are using pliers and a hammer when building a PC.

5 out of 5 eggsaddition to my previous review

Pros: Fast and low latency. Best spec ram should give best odds.

Cons: Achieving 2400 also depends on motherboard and CPU, not just the ram. Might have better luck with 2x8GB.

Other Thoughts: After *much* debugging, turns out my occasional crash seems to be related to this ram. No idea if the bottleneck is ram, the motherboard, the cpu, etc ... 2400 is overclocking and never guaranteed. Using 2133-9-11-11-28-2T made the crashes go away (it would happen 30 minutes - 2 hours into a game.) Now testing 2400-11-13-13-34-2T ... just FYI in case you encounter the same thing - happy bleeding edge building!

5 out of 5 eggsworking great

Pros: With 4x8GB, selected XMP1 profile in Hero bios, and settings+voltage worked great. Benches 36-38GB/s and 43-44ns latency in aida64. I even ran +2.3% bclk for margin testing, and no problem with Prime95 blend using 30GB of ram (woot!). It feels so much faster than my old 1600 CL9.

Cons: No real cons, just some comments. Command rate T1 simply won't work at these speeds and capacity. Also I'd prefer 1.5v but again there is no low-latency memory at 2400 with such a lower voltage at this time. The fins are tall, but they can be removed, though some people below have had problems apparently. Out of curiosity I tried overclocking to 2600-11-13-13-34 but that didn't work.

Other Thoughts: My removable fins came right off. One had screws that were a little tight, but nothing crazy. Use the right screwdriver that fits correctly. There is a tiny little washer for each screw, so keep an eye out for them. It just fits under my CM Hyper Evo 212. 2133-9-11-11-28 should also work if your mobo/chip just doesn't want to do 2400.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome RAM

Pros: Incredibly stable, high quality RAM. Works well with the Intel i7 4790K CPU.
Very attractive for those looking for an awesome hardware showing, especially, through an illuminated side case window.

Consulted with the G.Skill tech support via email- They are extremely cool and knowledgeable.

Cons: No Cons

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a highly compatible RAM module for an ASUS Z97 platform...Buy it!

5 out of 5 eggsGood RAM, nice pricing

Pros: It's RAM. It does RAM stuff. No, seriously, it's good RAM with a better price than most of its competition. The lifetime manufacturer guarantee is pretty nice too.

Cons: No cons. Solid RAM.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't Believe The Negative Reviews

Pros: This RAM is the best I have ever used. It is fast, stable, solid feeling, and great looking. Performance is absolutely as advertised or better. I'm currently running timings of 9-10-10-28. Benchmark results simply blow everything else away.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The number of reviewers who had chips that were DOA surprises me. I have to wonder is any of them really knows what the heck they are doing. In 30 years of building computers for home and business use, I learned long ago that it is easy to THINK you have the RAM fully seated in the slots, when in fact it is not. Firm pressure is always required to fully seat the RAM until it "clicks" into place, on BOTH ends. DON'T BLAME THE MANUFACTURER FOR INSTALLATION ERROR.

You also need to verify your motherboard fully supports this level of high performance RAM before you buy it and it expect it to work as advertised--NOT ALL MOTHERBOARDS DO. Read the online reviews by PROFESSIONAL testers and reviewers for a full list of considerations when making your purchase. Don't believe the negative comments of a bunch of gamer hacks who think they know what they're doing, but really don't.

5 out of 5 eggsDon't Believe The Bad Reviews

Pros: Highest performing ram I've seen anywhere. Runs at better than the rated timings. Currently running at 9-9-9-27. Benchmark results blow everything else I've tried out of the water. Solid feeling and great looking. Does the job without any issues whatsoever.

Cons: None. A number of reviewers on here have complained of modules showing up DOA. I have to seriously wonder if any of these folks know what they are doing. All ram modules have to be properly seated in the MB slots for them to be recognized. I can't tell you the number of times over the course of the last 30 years of building computers I THOUGHT the ram was properly seated, only to realize that it never fully clicked into place. DON'T BLAME THE MANUFACTURER FOR AN IMPROPER USER INSTALL.

1 out of 5 eggsRussian roulette

Pros: Looks nice, works well when it does work.

Cons: 1 out of 4 sticks DOA. Had to to RMA back to newegg. The plastic packaging had a big tear at the bottom, which could be the cause for the DOA. They really should have better QC and pack it better for something that costs 3-4 hundred bucks.

Dear Customer

Glad to hear you think the memory looks nice. It is strange a module was not working properly, but a replacement kit should work much better. This is a very high performance memory kit that should work flawlessly in your new build. With 32GB of DDR3-2400, it can fully unleash the processing power of any CPU on the market. Rest assured the system will operate at maximum performance. The high capacity will allow the system to remain nice and smooth even during the most memory intensive tasks. For any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat RAM, look no further.

Pros: Great RAM, fast speeds, reliable. Ran at advertised speeds and timings, no issues at all. Set BIOS to use XMP profile and you're good. Easily removed top fins for Noctura ND-14 cooler. Excellent choice until DDR4 comes down in price and the bugs are worked out.

Cons: None so far

1 out of 5 eggsDid I Make a Mistake?

Pros: Nice looking Sticks.

Cons: I have used Corsair Dominator memory for the last 12 years, in my personal computers and those I build for sale. I researched this memory and, even though I read several bad reviews of the product being defective upon receipt. I observed G.Skill customer service responding to those problems and thought I would take a chance with the product. I suppose I shall see if their customer service is real because I received the memory 2 days ago and it is DEAD DEAD DEAD!

Manufacturer Response:
