Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsFastest ram out of all mhz.

Pros: I must say that this ram has no competitor. I did my research for about a week couple hours a day trying to figure out what ram I wanted. Read about benchmarks mhz speed CL speed. Finally! found what I was looking for. This ram has the BEST timings and mhz speed out of any other big name company I could find. Even small companies I could find.
There truly is no match with the CL timings and the speed of this ram. I even have a stable OC at 2000mhz without slowing the timings down and no adjustment to the voltages. I can only imagine what this ram is capable of.

Cons: If I had to think of one, it would probably be there are no other colors or styles at this mhz and timings.

Other Thoughts: If anyone can find a CL of 8-9-9-24 that can clock to 2000mhz without adjusting anything else, Please, let me know. This ram also comes with two xmp profiles. Profile 2 is the faster of the two it comes with. Seriously mhz isn't everything. the timings matter just as much, and this is the fastest I've found with hours of research done. It's worth the money by far.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter specs at a competitive price

Pros: Better specs at a competitive price when compare to the competitors
Booted with no problems
Lots of positive reviews

Cons: I wish they had an all black version.
The price of these things doubled since I originally built my system

Other Thoughts: I'm slowing upgrading my build and decided to start with the memory. This RAM was competitively priced with Corsair Vengeance, but had better specs (8-9-9-24 vs 9-9-9-24), so I decided to go G.Skill this go round and I stepped up to 1866 from 1600. It seems that in each RAM category, G-Skills had better latency specs at about the same price. Also, the reviews were positive. I've noticed my programs open more snap with these combined with my updated SSD. I've already ordered a 2nd set for my rig. I installed them and it booted right up. I went into the BIOS and immediately set up the XMP profile and all is good. I'd recommend them to anyone if asked. Note: Corsair Vengenance are no slouch, however, at the same price, I was able to get better specs with G.SKill.

1 out of 5 eggsWorks great when it works

Pros: Runs at awesome speeds. Great price.

Cons: I can not get this RAM to run stable in my build. I have a Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 with plenty of cooling (it never runs above 48 C at full load) but the computer randomly freezes up and has to be rebooted. This RAM would be perfect if it would run stable.

Dear Customer

We will be glad to help with this issue. Please contact the G.Skill support team directly and they will make sure you computer is fast and stable. This is one of the best memory kits on the market, so with a supported motherboard and CPU, it will run flawlessly. To determine whether it may be a bad module, test one module at a time to see if one performs differently. Make sure XMP/DOCP is enabled in BIOS if it is supported by the motherboard. If you continue to have a problem, simply let us know and we can help right away.

1 out of 5 eggsLooked nice

Pros: I purchased because it is supposed to be one of the faster RAM choices available at 1866. Felt solid and not overly flashy if you opt out of the red rooster fin portion. Price was decent as well. I can't comment on its performance because I never got the chance to try it out, see cons below.

Cons: I got these delivered at work and pulled them out of the perfectly intact packaging and immediately discovered that both sticks had cracked heat spreaders. They both are in the same place, on the black portion of the spreader at the top of the U shape. If you hold it up to the light you can see light on the other side. One of sticks has a complete crack that looks like two completely separate heat spreader pieces being held together by the red heat spreader fin. Neither one looks to be physically damaged, and to me looks like a manufacturing defect. I immediately requested RMA from New Egg. I seriously doubt that a cracked heat spreader would affect performance, but this is not the condition I expect to see a brand new item that I paid full price for, so I cannot bring myself to accept using it.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased GSkill memory in the past and never had an issue. In fact this is the 1st time I've ever had an issue with RAM of any brand. So maybe I was just unlucky, but if it is a manufacturing defect, I don't know if I want to deal with this particular item again

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

Glad to hear you got the RAM at a good price. Once you install it in your system, it will work great. With regards to your concern, the RAM is held together by two black pieces on each side of the module, and then the red fin. There is no crack, there is no manufacturer defect, the memory is not damaged. The heavy duty Trident X heat spreaders can not be cracked. If you do not like the design, take a look at the RipJaws X series or Sniper as they may better suit you. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It is noticeably faster than the Gskill sniper series RAM that I replaced. I should have chosen this the first time. It was very easy to install. I installed the RAM, set the timings and voltage in the BIOS and it performs wonderfully. This particular RAM was not on my QVL for my MOBO, but I emailed G SKill and they said it would work without a problem. They were right.

Cons: No cons

Other Thoughts: I have an AMD FX 8350, Asus Crosshair v Formula z MOBO, Sapphire R9 295x2, and a Corsair RM1000 PSU.

5 out of 5 eggsSuper sick

Pros: I'll be honest, I bought the trident x series cause I have red rig and it looks so sweet inside, lol. Anyways, I am a gamer and it runs Rome Total War 2 super well paired with my HD7970. All games run beautifully and I play newer ones.

Cons: It costs money

5 out of 5 eggsGood performance, very satisfied

Pros: Good performance and capacity.

Cons: Some may like the style, personally I don't, but this does not really matters for me.

It is a good thing that you can take the heatsink off with just a small star screwdiver. I didn't.

5 out of 5 eggsthey work

Pros: they work

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: minor overclocking, works as intended.
The heat sinks stick out alot which prevents insertion into the slow near the cpu, wouldn't be a problem if I had a smaller cpu cooler.
