Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

3 out of 5 eggsIffy

Pros: Low-latency (but not the lowest); Can be over-clocked to 2133; Nice design and heatspreader

Cons: Got a defective stick right out of the box, with the others failing within a week; removing heat spreader voids warranty

Other Thoughts: Only got to use these for a couple weeks before I realized that they were the culprit for my persistent boot issues (even after setting BIOS to 1.6V), once I found the stick that was causing the issues the other ones began causing constant system instability and crashes. G. SKILL is currently in the process of replacing the set for me.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you are having such issues. This is one of the top memory kits on the market so it should definitely work much better. CL8 is the lowest latency for any DDR3-1866, you can find lower latency, but it will be a lower frequency. The G.Skill Trident X series uses the best chips on the market so you will not find anything better. After the modules are installed, make sure to manually configure settings in BIOS/EFI, or enable the XMP/DOCP profile. Once that is complete, the computer should be fast and stable. Some CPUs may not natively support DDR3-1866, so additional tweaks may be necessary to fully stabilize the system. If you are unsure of whether your CPU can natively support it, or if you encounter stability problems, simply contact the G.Skill support team and they will be glad to assist you. Once you are through with them, your computer will operate at maximum speed. A replacement kit should arrive shortly and it will work much better.

5 out of 5 eggsBeyond expectations

Pros: Ridiculously high performance for the class it's in, no other memory come close. Running beautifully on my Sabertooth z77 for over a year now and still no issues.

Wife is so impressed she's making me build her new tower with these. Too bad the price went up on them

Cons: Fins are pretty tall, make sure you watch for that when you choose your CPU cooling. Running a CM Hyper 212 and had to move the fan into the pull position to get it in place. Not enough to lose an egg over, but be aware.

Other Thoughts: Like many other performance sticks these did not run at stock right out of the box (they were at 15-15-15-24 at 1333mhz). Gave my fsb voltage a slight tweak and a quick reboot, then they ran perfectly at advertised spec without even having to touch them manually. If you're having issues getting these to the proper timings make sure you check the G.Skill forums before throwing in the RMA towel, there's a lot of useful information available if you take the time to look.

2 out of 5 eggsGSkill Fails Again

Pros: Ran Great @ Speed Advertised on heat spreader. For about a week....

Cons: Started getting lockups...No BSOD, Mind you..Just a total lock up. Only way out was a soft restart. Then of course windows wouldn't boot and finally taking all but 1 stick out I got windows to boot @ 1333 speeds on the ram. I downloaded MemTest86 and tested all sticks, one at a time and found 1 stick that wouldn't even let me start Memtest86. I'm soo tired of paying 3 to 400.00 dollars for ram that is supposed to run @ 1866 speeds just to see it fail. Yes, maybe 4 sticks @ dual channel is too much for the AMD 8350 but that doesn't account for not being able to run 1 stick @1333 speeds. 3 of the sticks passed the mem test so I guess I need to RMA the whole set of 4 to straighten this out, since this is a quad channel set.

Other Thoughts: I've never had to RMA since I usually just bite the bullet....but this ram cost me nearly $400.00 dollars and I'm tired of being left holding the bag. This isn't the 1st time GSkill has Let Me down but it will be the last. I'm going back to Corsair. I only gave this Ram 2 stars because it gave me 2 weeks of bliss before dying.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We are sorry to hear you had such issues. With the proper settings in BIOS, you should have no problems. Keep in mind AMD CPUs can only support ONE DIMM PER CHANNEL of DDR3-1866. Additional tweaks are necessary for the system to be fully stable. Without the proper configuration, it is possible for the memory to error over time. Please send the memory in for RMA exchange. Once you receive the new kit, make sure to manually input basic RAM settings in BIOS and raise the CPU-NB Voltage to stabilize the CPU memory controller. If you have any questions, or would like any assistance, feel free to contact the G.Skill support team. We will make sure the RAM is fast and reliable in your computer. This is one of the best memory kits on the market and we can prove that.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best RAM

Pros: This is an update to my earlier "High Quality failure" review.

I received my RMA replacement kit and I must say everything is working perfectly. I used MemTest to test each stick separately for 3 passes and all work as they should. This kit is now installed on the Asus Sabertooth MB with an AMD 8350 clocked to 4.8Ghz. This ram is running as advertised at 8-9-9-24 at DDR3-1872 speeds, just a bit higher on this board for some reason. Benchmarks are quite impressive and the machine is definitely more responsive after the upgrade.

Cons: Absolutely no cons with this memory.

Other Thoughts: Fast as all get out. I can now run several VM machines with no issues. This is one of the best RAM kits money can buy, at this speed, with a CAS 8 rating. Excellent G.Skill!

2 out of 5 eggsHigh quality failure

Pros: Super high quality sticks. I was surprised by the weight of these things. CAS 8 timings is nice.

Cons: 1 dead stick. 3 of the sticks pass Memtest with no issues. Unfortunately 1 stick will not even allow the machine to start. I will RMA back to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I always buy G.Skill ram and this is the first time with an issue. Too bad it had to with a high dollar, top quality, high speed set of ram.

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic Ram - Only one thing...

Pros: Timings, XMP profile, Z87 compatibility, and looks.

Timings: insane speeds - 18866@8-9-9-24-1T

X.M.P makes this easy as it gets. Don't be a MORAN and knock eggs due to your own inability to read and understand.

Z87 compatibility: Asus Sabertooth Z87, worked without issues out of the box.

Looks: I could kill and skin a small animal with these weapon like devices, evil looking to match the serious performance. Nice job on the looks.

Cons: OK, why did you lose one egg? - I'm gaming my face off last night in Marvel Heroes and I hear this ***THUNK*** inside my new super gaming rig, and I crapped my pants, I thought oh my sweet loving baby J-e-s-u-s tiny in the manger, what has happened!

I dropped the bomb with my Johnny Blaze and left a pile of lootz on the ground while I hit the exit button. Shut this puppy down hard like a F1 car in a pit stop and opened her up to find one weapon like device laing on top of my ASUS Matrix Plat 7970 - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot - The right side of the heat-sink on the ram chip in slot 2 came off - totally, taking with it the red heat sink and slamming into my Video card - I was like YOU bastages! then I calmed down removed the offending stick and observed that the side of the heat sink was never pressure seated properly on the IC's on the chip - I could tell due to the non existent adhesive marks from the heat tape on the back side of the heat spreader side plates and the top of the actual IC's - I carefully removed all of the Ram Sticks from the Mobo, and gave then all and firm but measured squeeze to seat the side plates, and guess what - without exception all of them actually squeezed in and had a solid contact with each of the IC's on both sides of the chip - G.Skill - this is supposed to be flagship, have a factory worker, check the heat spreaders for proper contact BEFORE it damages someones Video card. - I properly planned for any accidents and got all TUF or TUF like equipped components with you know, metal back plates...

Other Thoughts: System:
