Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggs48GB on ASUS P6T Deluxe v2

Pros: Works on my motherboard (1366/x58) but your mileage may vary!!!!

Cons: A little pricey but not much more than comparable memory.

Other Thoughts: with EZ Flash 2 using a USB flash drive. As before, I set AI overclock=manual, Speedstep=disabled, BCLK=190. DRAM=1523, CPU voltage=1.21250, and DRAM bus voltage=1.64. I haven't run stress tests this time but my CPU, MBoard, and 4 core temps with no load are where they were before the upgrade. I've been running this bios settings for a few years and it has been rock solid.

5 out of 5 eggsGaming performance at a price

Pros: Perfect stability at recommended XMP setting.

Lifetime warranty.

Very tight timings which can be tweaked slightly for even more stellar performance.

Awesome overclocking—this set can do it all, if you have applications that benefit more from bandwidth than latency.

Cons: This doesn't bother me in the slightest as I'm on WC, but those of you with large CPU coolers will probably run into issues with the rather bulky heat sinks. They can of course easily be removed, but this may limit safe OC headroom. Just a thought.

Other Thoughts: While this memory performs with excellence at the default speed and timings, I've also tested it at:

1800 - had to increase timings very slightly to 7-9-9-24 and voltage had to be bumped up to 1.65.
2133 - timings at 9-10-10-28, still at 1.65v.
2400 - timings at a still very healthy 10-12-12-30 and still at 1.65v.

You will put a little more strain on your memory controller, and I would not try it with the heat sinks removed, but this memory has got serious headroom...I didn't try any voltage higher than 1.65 because I'm a wuss :P

5 out of 5 eggsWorking great a year later

Pros: I paid 169 for these in Oct 2013. I have had no troubles. I use them with and older I7-970.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I actually purchased these to replace a pair of G.Skill 4GB chips. One had gone bad after 3 years. For my latest build I am moving to DDR4s. I chose G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4-19200). Clearly I am happy with G.Skill so far.

5 out of 5 eggsSo freakin good, I ordered another 2 sticks!

Pros: I'm going to make this review as quick and to the point as possible. Fast, stable, and worth every penny. Memory doesn't hesitate to give me what my system demands. I originally had 16gb, and ordered 16gb more just to max out the 32gb my mobo can handle. Gaming rig complete!

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 2 months

Pros: Fast when it is healthy.

Cons: After 2 months of normal usage, they are dead !

The result was tested by memTest and Windows diagnosis tools.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

We will be glad to help with this issue. Test one module at a time to see if a stick performs differently. If so, send them in for RMA exchange and a new kit should work much better. Once you receive the replacement, make sure to enable XMP/DOCP, or manually configure settings in BIOS/EFI. This is not a plug and play memory kit so most motherboards can not automatically recognize the RAM correctly. With the proper settings input, then the memory will work fast and reliable in your computer. This is a high performance, high capacity memory kit that will last a long time if used appropriately. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you
