Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsWOW it's fast

Pros: Fast fast fast! I read too much into horror stories about over-volted RAM & bought this because even though it's only 1600mhz, it's standard voltage, & the CAS timings don't get better at 2x8GB.

Cons: The heatsinks seem to me to be gratuitous at best (I accidentally pulled one completely off at one point, then just kinda mushed it back on), but they're pretty, & if need be you can remove the top red fin bit, so that's nice at least.

Other Thoughts: I later realized that with an ASUS Maximus VI Impact & a 4770K that I had no need to worry about 1.65v RAM (my bad), but if nothing else, my next RAM kit will probably be by G.SKILL.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Fixed data loss problems. Works consistently. No problems. Its fast and meets advertised specs.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Primarily used for gaming. I need speed not bandwidth. Will buy more when needed.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with my asus z97-pro motherboard

Pros: I'm using this memory with my asus z97-pro motherboard and i7-4790 processor and it's been working great! I had to tell the motherboard to use the XMP profile to get the faster timings that the memory is rated for, however after that everything's been working perfectly.

So far I have not experienced any stability issues out of the system with this memory!

Cons: Had to specify to use the XMP memory profile in the bios (however I suspect that's more of a motherboard problem then memory) and definitely not a major con.

4 out of 5 eggsReview

Pros: Great Timings
Decent Speed Rating
Removable Fins

Cons: Expensive (For RAM)

Other Thoughts: I bought this to increase my performance. I was using regular Ripjaws before I purchased this kit and I can see a pretty big difference in performance using this kit over the regular Ripjaws.

I know this is only a 1600 kit, but my motherboard (GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev. 4.0) only supports 1600. Still, for the rated speed and timings this is a great kit for gaming.

The only drawback to this kit is the price... it's a tad overpriced. Personally I think $140.00 - $150.00 would have been more reasonable.

Manufacturer Response:

.
Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear this memory kit made a significant improvement to your system. With the Trident X series, you know you are not getting anything average. The frequency may be average, but the ultra low timings is what makes this kit stand out. A quick search online and you will find that this kit is not common, and that is reflected in the pricing. For gaming, or computer that can't support a high frequency, this is the best memory kit on the market.

Thank you

5 out of 5 eggsUnderrated ram

Pros: Great, low latency ram for a decent price when Newegg has one of those discount codes or the price falls for a short while. I mean why go out and buy corsair dominator platinum CAS 7 for like $250 when you can get this for $140 on sale. Not to mention it looks good as well.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Used this in my first system and it has treated me well
