Features

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Kit! Sure to order more

Pros: - Looks great
- Heat spreaders do their job
- Height of modules is not a real issue as many say
- Amazing Overclockability
- Solid Price-to-Performance ratio
- Good packaging

Cons: - None as of the time of this review

Other Thoughts: -Arrived on time-
The overclock of this 1600mhz 7-8-8-24 kit is wonderful. With a voltage of 1.62 was able to hit 2200Mhz 9-11-11-31. With the memory overclock my 3D model renders and batch video encoding performance increase (depending on the kind of work) by 9-15% in total elapsed time.

1600mhz scores:
Avg Read: 3877Mbs // Avg Write: 2870Mbs // Linear Latency: 5.60ns // Random Latency: 72.48ns // Random Range Latency: 23.59

2200mhz scores:
Avg Read 4016Mbs // Avg Write: 3245Mbs // Linear Latency: 4.70ns // Random Latency: 65.22ns // Random Range Latency: 21.14

I would like to point out I was able to run this kit at 2400Mhz as well but it required a slightly higher voltage then I was comfortable with running 24/7

Did a 48hr Memtest86 and a 48hr Prime95 test on a Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 with a Xeon E3-1231 V3 cooled by a H110i (Has 2 Noctua Fans) in a Thermaltake Core21 coupled with a eVGA GTX 960 4Gb SSC ACX2.0+ and a eVGA SuperNova 650w PSU

Note:
Operating system - Linux (Arch)

3 out of 5 eggsThe RAM is OK, but not exactly superb

Pros: It's RAM, and it works

Cons: The heatsinks are attached by strips of tape. The adhesive melted and the heatsinks fell off after about a year and a half.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend G.Skill after having my experience with these sticks.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi James

Glad to hear the memory was working well in your system. This is a high performance memory kit that can unleash the processing power of any CPU on the market. With 16GB installed, the operating system will be capable of anything you put it to.

It is extremely odd for a heat spreader to fall off due to heat. But in any case, don't worry, all G.Skill memory kits are backed by a manufacturer lifetime warranty from such defects. Send it in for RMA exchange and we can have a brand new replacement out to you shortly. Once you receive the new RAM, make sure to configure settings in BIOS/EFI, or enable the XMP/DOCP profile. Doing so will ensure the RAM is set up properly and running at the correct specifications. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you

4 out of 5 eggsgreat buy

Pros: works great an the fins are not as large as my last set

Cons: none

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear the RAM is working great in your computer. The Trident X series is the best DDR3 on the market, so you can expect outstanding results with any system. Also, if you have a build that is tight on space, the red fins of the heat spreader can be removed for the RAM to fit in most cases including HTPC, SFF, m-ATX, and so forth. It is the most versatile memory on the market. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

5 out of 5 eggs2 years later

Pros: great ram.
great timing.
needed 1.56v to run 7-8-8-24 1T as advertized.

Cons: I never overclocked them so I can't say much about that.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what happened to me recently, but I've been caring more about packing a punch from a PC minus all the unnecessary watt consumption....

I ended up selling my 4690 CPU to my friend and buying a 4690T (also a quad core, that only has a TDP of 45w!) 2.5ghz with turbo of 3.3ghz.

Benchmarks barely notice the difference. Maybe overall this cpu is about 18% faster. But I'm not encoding any videos (yet) so I don't really care.
I could have gotten a 35w TDP 4670T dual core with HT, but figured for another 10w why not future proof it a bit since prices were similar.

I also ridded of my Mini ITX GTX760 that pulled 200w on full load. Got a Mini ITX GTX950 that now takes a 6 pin instead of 8 and has a ~90w TDP i believe.

Even sold the GSkill TridentX 1.5v DDR3 1600mhz 7-8-8-24 1T ram for 1.35 DDR3L 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 1T ram and run them at 1.25v.

PC used to pull 300w on full load of GPU and CPU... now it wont even get to 200w and it gets better FPS.

What a difference.

Now looking to eliminate my LCD screens that take up 280w while all 3 are on for some LED backlits that take up 80w total for 3.

Wish they had a 80Plus Gold Modular PSU that was 300w... my CS450m is now too much for my mini ITX.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product - Newegg let me down

Pros: Owned 2 of these modules for over a year. Just ordered 2 more to expand to 32gb. Memory is fast and operates at the advertised speeds. Not much to say here. You snap them in and you're done.

Cons: For the product? It's a little pricey for 2 year old modules. For the retailer? See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: I'm on day 7 of Newegg's "FREE 3 day or faster shipping". I'm just south of Seattle. I'd love to explain more about why I'm upset, but newegg doesn't allow criticism of Newegg.com's service or the service of their operations partners in reviews, which in itself should tell you something, so I will say is this... my experience purchasing this product has been poor.
