It's Not the Fastest, Until It's TridentX!

Memory Frequency World Record at DDR3 4404MHz

Memory Frequency World Record at DDR3 4404MHz
Breaking the highest DDR3 speed world record at a staggering 4404MHz in 2013, G.SKILL TridentX series is known as the world's most powerful and fastest DDR3 memory available on the market. Named after the powerful weapon of Poseidon, Greek God of the Seas, G.SKILL TridentX is imbued with extreme overclocking capabilities waiting to be unleashed in your system.

Removable Heat Spreader Fin

The G.SKILL TridentX series features a removable heat spreader fin to improve your cooling options. With the heat spreader fin, the increased surface area keeps the memory cooler. Alternatively, with a system that already has a sufficient cooling solution, the fins can be removed to accommodate massive CPU coolers or other customized cooling solutions.

If you follow my posts on the forums, you'll find that I consider myself one of Corsair's biggest fans, but those feelings were thrown completely out of whack when I received this kit from G.Skill. The G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to completely amaze me with its quality and clocking ability, and I fell in love after checking its price. You cannot find a 4 x 4GB 2666MHz kit for less right now unless it's been put on sale. This kit manages to overcome any performance deficiencies with flexibility and great overhead. At stock, I managed to beat out my trusty Corsair Dominator Platinum kit with a little bit of tweaking. Overclocked, the G.Skill F3-2666C11Q-16GTXD kit managed to go just as high without a boost in voltage. That is just outright fantastic.

G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit put on an impressive display of performance, easily overcoming the competition in all but four of the benchmarks used. Unfortunately, the memory was bottlenecked by the processor -- limiting the overclock to a 104 bclk and leaving us with a final overclock of 2218MHz and timings of 10-12-12-31 2T. Paired with a 3rd generation Intel processor, G. Skill's 2400 MHz Trident X kit would have benefited greatly from the increased bandwidth and has the potential to hit 2500MHz with some fine tuning.

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

Gold Award at OverClockersClub

G.Skill's Trident X line-up comes with kits that range from the 2400MHz kit we are looking at to a 2800MHz kit for massive memory speeds and the associated bandwidth that is a hallmark of higher speed bins. It seems that G.Skill is most definitely targeting the budget overclocker with this set of Trident X modules. A $99 price tag for 2400MHz-rated modules is a welcome sight after seeing huge price tags just a few months back for cas8 and 9 modules binned above 2133MHz. The Trident X are modules that perform well and deliver some overhead for a little bit more tweaking and come with G.Skill's lifetime warranty. Excellent looks aside, the Trident X would make a good addition to any system and have the flexibility to be cooled in multiple ways.

3 out of 5 eggs1 of 4 in the quad kit is defective

Pros: 3 of the 4 seem ok, so gave 3 stars.

Cons: 1 of the 4 is reported as defective per the ASUS x79-Deluxe tools. XMP wouldn't work properly i suppose because of this 1 bad one that was messing things up.

Other Thoughts: Do I return only the 1 or all 4? Guess I'm about to request an RMA, but I see this kit is out of stock. Wonder how long I might have to wait on a replacement single or kit? A bit annoying to have to pay shipping on a defective product of course.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer

We apologize for the inconvenience. For high performance kits such as the G.Skill Trident X series, it is necessary to return the entire kit so we can replace it with a complete kit. It is imperative for high speed RAM to match perfectly for optimal performance. The RMA process should be quick and hassle free, so a new kit will be out to you shortly. We understand how important it is to have your system up and running at full speed, so everything is completed as soon as possible. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you

Quality and customer service are our top priorities.

5 out of 5 eggsIt Just Works

Pros: Its fast, and it works. It works exactly as designed. No errors, no problems. And it comes with a lifetime warranty.

Cons: The ram came with "cooling" fins witch interfered with my Noctua cooler. Fortunately, G.SKILL has allowed these to be removed by removing a simple screw, so not a big deal. More of a PRO than a CON really...

Other Thoughts: Good price, good ram, good company. Hard to beat G.SKILL.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent RAM set

Pros: Excellent performance on Socket 2011, and easy to config, just remember to use the XMP profile. A lot of people don't seem to realize that they need to just set the XMP profile to get full performance out of it. Memory isn't plug and play unless you want to deal with the "slow but easy and stable" OEM stuff, but the config isn't hard at all. It just requires staying informed.

Cons: The heatsinks are a little tall and can interfere with certain coolers. My experiences with this memory are that it doesn't even need these cooler. They're barely warm to the touch while running full bore. Are they really needed? I prefer to just use a close loop water cooler to avoid issues like this.

Other Thoughts: These are the same modules that are used in other DDR3-2133 modules, but are tuned for lower latency instead. They can be overclocked, but it will raise the latency. It doesn't overclock to 2133 as well as some others because of this low latency tuning. This is more geared toward being able to load up a full 64GB on a Socket 2011 board without having crippling latency, rather than flat out speed. Think light sports pickup vs sports car. A couple sets like this will give you high end gaming performance while giving you enough memory to run all those VMs or high res Photoshop or video editing while not gaming. It does the job well.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful and Fast

Pros: These are great low latency memory sticks. If you're forking over the money for this make sure you're not just throwing diamonds into a dumpster.Great for OC'ing as well and aesthetically they look great.

Cons: I wish I had enough money for this and the 6 core intel processor at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsG.Skill Ram

Pros: Worked right away, lookers pretty cool and I couldn't be happier with my new beastly gaming computer

Cons: Nothing, memorty rated at a solid 7.9 in my systems ratings

Other Thoughts: I want to add 4 more chips, but can't justify it, because I could put my entire MMO download on it and still have enough memory left to play the game.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

Pros: High capacity, high frequency, low latency. Exactly what you want in memory.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: My motherboard (ASUS P8H77-M Pro) did not auto-detect the optimal frequency or CAS latencies for this RAM (using latest BIOS, version 1005). I had to configure it to 1600 MHz, 7-8-8-24 manually. It defaulted to 1333 MHz, 9-9-9-24.

memtest86+ completed the first pass in about 2 hours, no errors.

I haven't tried overclocking it. And I don't think I'll bother.
