The Fastest drive in the world, a user real world experience
- Pros: The fastest drive in the world. Cool to the touch, not heat. FAST FAST. screaming fast.
- Cons: Non whatsoever.
- Other Thoughts: I just got this yesterday after a long weekend wait and let me tell you this thing rocks. And it rocks fast :). I am going to give you a review on a perspective of real world usages and not on benchmark with all the numbers, not yet anyways.
I bought this for my MacBook Pro unibody and it is the best upgrade I have ever done. The speed is just simply mind boggling. I was shocked on how fast everything is. I am not talking about user wishful thinking, bias opinion of the speed gain, I am talking about screaming fast, jaw dropping speed. To give you some ideas on how fast this thing boots up, with the original stock drive, I got out a stop watch and timed it (not very scientific here but it'll do) and it took 1 minutes and 46 secs to cold boot the MacBook Pro into the desktop. With this new SSD, it took 22 seconds.
Applications loading is extremely fast as well. I mean, as soon as you hit the icon, the app is already fully loaded. I have a 8000 songs iTunes library plus about 40+ m
Good performance with a little upkeep.
- Pros: Fast fast fast
- Cons: Drives degrade very fast.
- Other Thoughts: DON'T REFORMAT THIS DRIVE. If you have to reinstall windows do the quick install and if you have to do a format do the Quick format. The full reformat will make drives much slower. To fix the drive if you start to see the performance drop or if you have already reformatted, use HDDerase to completely erase the drive. Version 3.3 worked on my Corsair X64. My performace index in Win 7 went down to 5.9 after I formatted the drive. Once I used HDDerase to clean the SSD and reinstalled Win7. Performace index went back to 7.7. This will do until corsair gets newer firmware to keep the drive clean. Also if you have a RAID array you will have to take the drives out and erase each one separately, then put them back in the array.

FAST & Easy to setup
- Pros: Extremely fast - during a fresh rebuild of Windows 7 (64bit) on my notebook there were a ton of restarts (OS, drivers, applications, etc.) - this drive made them all FAST. Even downloads from the internet were much faster. Windows 7 Index: 7.1. Installing applications was a breeze. Drive replaced a WD 320gb/7200 which was no slouch.
- Cons: None. Some are commenting on the cost - but I purchased my first hard drive in 1984 - a Seagate "20 MEG" and paid $625. So if you buy early technology it will cost more.
- Other Thoughts: Check before you flash. While waiting for this drive, I reviewed the Corsair SSD user forum. They mentioned a new firmware update (VBM19C10) that was available and what you needed to apply it. This FW is designed to ensure TRIM functions with Windows 7. When I received the drive the label said it was FW: VBM18C10. However, when ran the flash routine - it reported the drive was already at 19C10. If you have doubts down load CrystalDiskInfo, put the drive in an external case and check. Also, considering your investment in purchasing one of these - you should also look into Diskeeper 2010 with HyperFast (you can't use the Windows Defrag program on this drive). Comments from Corsair techs state that "if" you're going to use this program it needs to be introduced early before the drive degrades.
Great
- Pros: All
- Cons: Price
Still Fast as Snot Using WIndows 7
- Pros: I'm the guy who installed 4 of these puppies on a Rocket Raid 3520 PCI-X card for 1 TB of Raid 0 ssd. That was in July last year. I've just upgraded to Windows 7 so here's my follow up review.
Pros include maximum Read Speed at Max Bandwidth on PCI-X card (roughly 750 Megabytes a second (!!!)) I'm using about 60 % of the total SSD capacity and have had no substantial Read slowdowns or stutters. Windows 7 appears to detect that this is an SSD RAID and uses new cache writing software that is better suited for SSD right out of the box. Definitely worth the upgrade from XP.
- Cons: RAID controller doesn't let TRIN commands interact from Win 7 to individual disk controllers. So WRITE speed has slowed down from when brand new. (However, it must be noted that my workflow has not really slowed down... including intensive Lightroom and Photoshop work on 8gig quadcore machine.) The fact that the RAID 0 uses four drives still delivers incredibly fast write speeds even when blocks start getting reused.
There is a way to consolidate the data through the RAID and then use a third-party program to re-write all the NAND segments to zero, but A) it's only a temporary speed-up. B) You won't notice the slowdown using a 4-way RAID 0 as described. C) You run the risk of losing data (it's not worth it IMHO and it's still plenty bloody fast).
- Other Thoughts: After 6 months of use in XP and now Win 7 64bit environment, I am still ecstatic. This IS the future. As for cost, I remember all too well shelling $6,000 to Dell for one of their early Workstations. Even with all this whiz bang, this desktop cost substantially less than that and the performance is enormous. It's a game changer.
BUT NOTE that this is not a simple project for the idle builder. This requires careful research and upgrading all your BIOS, as well as researching the best stripe length etc. for the RAID itself. You'll also be turning certain things off in Win 7 like "Superfetch" etc. Good luck... it's worth it.
