Performance Spe'cs are accurate
- Pros: Running windows 7 tested read/write metrics using drive diagnostics software registered performance as it is published. Single drive performs as good as 2 10,000 velociraptors RAID0
- Cons: None
XP users, please read
- Pros: Just some helpful tips
- Cons: None
- Other Thoughts: If you're going to use Windows XP on a solid state drive (any brand), you must manually align the partition to the correct location. If you don't, you will get the infamous "stuttering" problem that some people are complaining about. Just Google around. Look for dispar.exe examples.
In addition, if you're using Windows XP, you'll need to do a number of tweaks to make any SSD work optimally.
Search the OCZtechnologyforum as a starting point.
Windows 7 users don't need to do anything to get a pleasant and optimal experience from your SSD (except for ensuring that your SSD has the firmware that supports TRIM command). If you don't know what TRIM is, you can look on Wikipedia. Also be sure to check out anandtech.com for some amazing articles on how SSDs work and what do look for (or out for).
I hope that helps at least a few people.
Great drive
- Pros: Very fast. This was for my work laptop, which had a 100 GB Seagate Momentus 5400 RPM drive in it. The performance was ok, but when I tried running a Win XP guest VM inside my Fedora host (VMWare Workstation) the whole thing ground to a halt. After installing the SSD it's faster than I can imagine. The Win XP VM on SSD is faster now than Win XP was as the host OS on the old drive. Boot time is amazing - after typing my pw to login the entire desktop is typically loaded in under 3-4 seconds. Opening docs is incredibly fast - even big Excel/Word docs in the Windows VM in Office 2007.
- Cons: Price and apparently no "TRIM" support, but I knew that going into it.
- Other Thoughts: SSD are still expensive but I don't think there's any better upgrade for most PCs at this point. Going from 2 gigs to 4 gigs of memory (or 4 to 8) won't make much difference for most people, but 5400 RPM laptop drive to a good SSD is like night and day.
