1 out of 5 eggsDead After Two Months

Pros: None

Cons: Unreliable right up until its death, a very expensive leason

Other Thoughts: At the price being charged for this item it should be flawless

Manufacturer Response:

We prefer flawless too but, due to the laws of physics, pretty much ANY product made with a semiconductors is going to have a minimum of a 2% failure rate. And, that is why we have our warranty. Please RMA the drive and we'll replace it.

3 out of 5 eggsNOT COMPATIBLE with Toshiba R700 / R705

Pros: These drives are excellent in terms of performance. It was rated at 7.6 by the Windows Experience Index. Blazingly fast in normal use.

Newegg was nice and let me return this drive for a refund. However, Newegg's return policy does NOT require them to do this. So buyer beware! You may be stuck with it, even if it doesn't work in your system.

Cons: NOT COMPATIBLE with some laptop and motherboard configurations. The drive will intermittently fail to return from sleep or hibernate. Or fail to boot. This is true for the Toshiba R700 and R705 laptops. Don't be fooled by the earlier review that makes light of this problem. It can cause you to lose data by crashing windows when you are returning from sleep/hibernate. That's a serious issue.

Other Thoughts: Corsair says that these drives are not compatible with some systems, yet they offer no recourse. You can't exchange it for a different model. Instead Corsair tells you to use it in a different computer! Or to wait for yet another firmware update and pray that it fixes the problem. They have been issuing firmware updates since June of last year, so I wouldn't count on a solution anytime soon.

3 stars for this SSD. 5 stars for Newegg's excellent support and willingness to be flexible with their return policy for my situation.

1 out of 5 eggsSimply Awful

Pros: When it worked it was okay.

Cons: When I first installed this drive in my MacPro 8-Core it worked okay. Then it started to randomly lock up the machine. I know the SSD is the culprit because I have a nightly clone of my boot drive on a regular platter HDD which never freezes when booted from.

Searching on Corsair's support forums, they claim that firmware 2.0 solves these issues. However, there is no tool to upgrade the firmware on a Mac. So I RMAed the drive back to Corsair at my own expense to update the firmware.

Today I got the drive back and immediately cloned my boot drive back to the SSD. However the new "improved" 2.0 Firmware has made the drive much much worse. It beachballs on boot (takes about 5 minutes to boot) and has already frozen on me twice. At this point I can only consider this drive to be defective and a ~$600 ineffectual paperweight.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this drive if you like your computer to work properly without freezing or booting extraordinarily slowly.

Manufacturer Response:

Please contact Technical Support and provide your original RMA #. We will assist you and resolve this ASAP. We are very sorry you had this issue after being required to RMA.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

Pros: Was easy to install, works great. Have had no problems as of yet with it and it's been in for a couple months now.

Cons: -Price
-The tray to put into 3.5 inch bays DOES NOT WORK in Alienware computers. You have to keep the case panel off, which isn't great. But that's Dell's fault.

Other Thoughts: The way of the future.

1 out of 5 eggsBuy with extreme caution

Pros: It is indeed very, very fast.

Cons: The controller in this hard drive is not, apparently, compatible with a lot of laptops, including my Thinkpad T61. It runs fine as long as you don't try to put the laptop to sleep, wake it up, or change the hardware profile (say, by docking or undocking it). Unfortunately, I do all of those on a regular basis, and they resulted in bluescreens and restarts as soon as I installed this drive. Putting the old drive back fixed them, so it's clearly a problem with the Corsair. I'm also not the only person to have this problem--Google for your laptop model to see if others have been affected.

Other Thoughts: At the time I purchased this, Newegg was not offering refunds (only returns/replacements, which is useless when the product itself is incompatible as designed). With that policy in mind, I'd advise being very careful about buying this drive. You could be out hundreds of dollars with no good options if it doesn't work.

Manufacturer Response:

These issues have been addressed with a firmware update. Please contact Technical Support or visit our forums to obtain the update. We apologize for any inconvenience you have had.

3 out of 5 eggsNot in OEM laptops

Pros: Good help on Corsair forums

Cons: Not supported by OEM laptops

Other Thoughts: This SSD might work in your laptop. I purchased this even with some knowledge of compatibility because of the cost. It was more than $100 cheaper than the equivalently size SSD from Samsung or Intel. That advantage is gone.

The problem is that the BIOS on the laptop has to be compatible with the Sandforce controller used in these Corsair drives. The manufacturer of the motherboard of the laptop might provide an updated BIOS. We don't know if the Sandforce controller firmware can/will be updated to be more compatible. This drive is not recommended (by Corsair) for OEM laptops. It all depends on which drives the laptop manufacturer has tested against their laptop. My understanding is that Samsung and Intel controllers are more likely to be tested.

Given the current situation, I would make a different choice.

1 out of 5 eggsfreezing frequently, unreliable, avoid

Pros: relative low price in promotion.

Cons: started freezing frequently after a few weeks usage, even with firmware 2.0.

Other Thoughts: the reliability of this product is questionable.

Manufacturer Response:

We are sorry you have had issues with your F240 SSD. Please keep in mind that there are factors other than the SSD itself that can cause the issue you are seeing. Please contact Tech Support using the link below and we'll be happy to assist you. And, we will certainly replace the drive if needed.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks in Toshiba R705-P35 laptop

Pros: * Fast
* Shock resistant
* Seems to work in Toshiba laptop

Cons: * Price for this and other SSDs are a little high for their capacity
* Problems with compatibility

Other Thoughts: I decided that I wanted my laptop to be as fast as it could be. I have a Toshiba R705-P35. I purchased this drive to replace the internal drive that came with the laptop. If you follow up on the Corsair forums you'll find a lot of discussion of problems, mostly with compatibility.

I had one minor problem with the BIOS not recognizing the SSD on cold boot in one out of 15 boots. The work around in this case was a power cycle. Other problems reported were BSODs after a sleep (S3 mode). I did not have the sleep problem.

What you need is the drive, an external enclosure, a data copying program, partitioning software, updated BIOS, updated IDE/ATA drivers (Intel RST version 10), Windows 7, AHCI mode in the BIOS, and the latest firmware (version 2.0) for the SSD. You'll need all of this to make this work.

I used the Acronis Disk Director software to partition the drive and copy the data.

I haven't had any problems since I'd made all these changes. Enjoy your SSD!

2 out of 5 eggssandforce controller is only good in benchmark

Pros: reasonable price

Cons: the advertised speed can only be achieved with uncompressed data but not real life data. sandforce controller is just a hype.

Other Thoughts: will wait for intel's third generation SSD for further purchase.
