Will this be a compatible replacement for a strip of "CORSAIR Vengeance 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9"?

One manufacturer has in the past reported that they do extra testing for matched kits, to make sure that the three sticks of RAM in the kit will operate correctly in paired mode.  The same manufacturer also reported that they detect only occasional anomalies in normal clock speeds (1600 and under) while most of the problems matching happen in overclocked speeds above 1600.

The RAM sticks appear to have identical specs, so what you'd most likely be doing is purchasing a "matched set" that did not undergo manufacturer testing to certify that it worked.  If you've had one stick in a set of three die, the manufacturer will probably replace it since lifetime warranties are common, but that's a hassle and I can certainly see just buying a new stick rather than wait.

All that said, I bought a single stick of this years ago for a machine that was supposed to be a low-power Linux media server.  Recently I converted that system into a gaming PC, and got a second stick of the same part number.  They paired up fine and I haven't had any problems!

Also, any problems would probably only mean you have to manually increase the latency numbers by one.  Latency numbers have yet to show any real difference in benchmarks, so you have that fix available if something acts funny.

Not certain which PC I used this on, but since all my recent mobos have been ASUS AMD boards, I feel safe in saying, Yes, ASUS B worked OK with this memory.  Pretty sure it was an ASUS bd I used with an AMD A-10  APU chip.

what does Timing 9-9-9-24 mean?

i have a gateway desktop SX 2380 WITH 8 GB RAM and would like two 4gb memory additions and just want to be sure this will work?

"DDR3 1600" and "PC3 12800" both refer to the clock rate of the RAM.  9-9-9-24 tells you how many clock cycles it takes the RAM to process four different kinds of request.  (i.e. a Read operation might take 9 clock cycles.)

When buying new RAM you should match the speed of RAM the system currently has installed, if you're going to try to add more on top of the existing sticks.  You can check what's installed using the BIOS.

Another thing you can find out via the BIOS is how many RAM sticks are already installed.  That computer has four RAM slots, and usually comes with 4GB installed, so you may very well have four sticks of 2GB already in there.  If that's the case, you'll be removing RAM at the same time as you're adding it, so buying another 8 might only bring you up to 12 not 16.

Motherboards for system builders tend to be very flexible with RAM compatibility.  Motherboards sold in pre-built systems might be less flexible.  So I might tell you that it "should" work, and it would probably work on my motherboard, but there's a possibility I might be wrong when it comes to your SX2380 because Gateway's motherboard could be a bit more restrictive than my motherboard.  Not saying it is, just saying it's a concern and it's not uncommon.

So, you can do one of three things:

1:  You can replace ALL of the RAM sticks with new ones that match,

2: You can buy sticks that match the ones currently installed,

3: You can try this pair and hope for the best, and be prepared  for the possibility that you might have to buy a second pair of Corsair to make it work.

For (3), also be prepared that the SX2380 might not read it at all.  If you plug it in and the system doesn't work, try with ONLY the Corsair RAM installed.  If it works then, buy more Corsair.  If it doesn't, you're out of luck.

You can also buy RAM that's known to be compatible with that system, using Gateway's compatibility list.  Then it will be matched and you shouldn't have to worry.
