1 out of 5 eggsGood idea, bad implementation

Pros: First, I do not personally own this product. It was bought from Newegg on my recommendation and then I installed it for a friend's older and then finally new build which I will detail below. The pros are that it does indeed give true SSD-like performance WHEN IT WORKS. That is the only pro. The cons are many.

Cons: Where to begin. First, this drive was bought at my recommendation for a friends older PC that used a nVidia MCP (HP brand Phenom machine). Wow. Mistake. Forget about using the NVelo Dataplex software on any nVidia chipset. In fact, in the latest release *attempted* support was removed for nVidia MCPs altogether. So, my friend opted for a new build. Seeking to initially save money and not spring for a large SSD I built him a new machine and installed this drive again. Another sure to UNINSTALL the Dataplex software before starting over. It forces you to register and the key stays locked and in use unless you uninstall it or (in my case) call Corsair to have them release the key. Lesson learned there. So, that aside, I used this drive solution in the new build and it seemed OK for a couple of days. Then the boot, insanely long boot, corruption. Reinstall necessary to fix. Does not like the Intel AHCI driver set/no boot. Must use default Microsoft.

Other Thoughts: Did not take me long to figure this drive should be yanked and TOSSED. He initially offered to give it to me but I refused to take it and foist it upon someone else (kharma and all). I had my friend take it outside and SHOOT it with his Springfield 1911A1 45 Auto. No joke. Started over with a Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 480GB SSD and no more problems. Weeks later the system is totally stable with no issues. Here is what the final system ended up being:

Gigabyte GA-Z77MX-D3H mATX motherboard, F12 BIOS
Crucial Ballistix 8 GB DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.5 V (2x4GB)
Core i5-3570K at default clocks
MSI OC Radeon HD 7950
Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 480GB SSD
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB HDD as mass storage
Cooler Master Elite 430 Series case w/side window
LG BD-R/CD/DVD drive
Corsair TX650v2 PSU
Microsoft 400 series keyboard/mouse combo
ASUS PCI-E N15 Wireless Adapter
Atech Flash AFT XM-37U USB 3.0 kiosk card reader
Win7 OEM 64bit Home Premium

2 out of 5 eggsUseless IMO.

Pros: The product presents a good idea, just poorly implemented.

Cons: I installed this which is easy, installed the dataplex software and upon rebooting I get an error popping up which belongs to the software. "It appears that the service component of DataPlex has failed." Reinstalled several times with no luck. The data plex software does say the service is running - so it must be right?

Well? I cannot tell.. nothing is faster, and this is more than 2 months later. Photoshop still takes forever to open the first time, as does sony vegas and ableton live.

Also, since installing I have suddenly had some random 100% freezes where out of nowhere the entire system stops, no mouse, nothing frozen picture. I now have to reset and the dataplex software now has to reconfigure the drives at boot.. which only takes 1 minute (another reason I think it isnt working b/c people say it takes a lot longer.

Other Thoughts: Before installing this I had 2x1TB in RAID 0 which I wanted to be snappier - snappier like the 3 other computers I use with SSDs as their main drive. This doesnt do much... its not the same.. invest in a real SSD.

Upon contacting the company 2 months ago I never had a response (and yes I checked my spam folder). This device just seems like another good way to ensure my data is lost when one of my 3 drives goes bad..

5 out of 5 eggsHaven't had an issue yet

Pros: No need to manage apps like most SSD solutions, it's still much faster than a standard HDD, and it's quite cheap. Haven't had an issue with it yet.

Cons: Not the fastest solution?

Other Thoughts: For the price and performance, combined with low effort to manage it, it's a slam dunk.

1 out of 5 eggsGet ready to reinstall a lot...

Pros: When it works, it works pretty well. Windows does start up quickly, apps in the startup group are also fast. .

Cons: Randomly crashes, resulting in *very* slow bootups (painful, 10-15 minute on an i7-940 w/16Gb ram). No indication that the SSD is having difficulty, and the only remedy to "fix" is to uninstall and reinstall the software for it to go back to "normal".

I've owned the unit for 3 months, and I've had to do this 3 times. The 2nd time, I installed the latest Dataplex software from their website (no notification from them via popup or email, btw - gg Corsair), but no joy to my problems.

Definitely won't look to Corsair for SSD needs in the future.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad but failed after 3 weeks

Pros: Does what it says, programs open fast and boot time are incredible.

Cons: Drive started to fail after 3 weeks and caused all kinds of problems. Couldn't boot and after a repair somethings just didn't work right, Have to do a fresh install.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't work on my system

Pros: None yet.

Cons: Hasn't really worked on my older AMD system since day one. Software crashes after a few minutes of use. Even with the numerous Dataplex software updates I can't get the SSD to work with my system. Corsair tech support was helpful at first but kind of disappeared because they weren't able to resolve the problem.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for Corsair before they were available on NewEgg. I should have waited for NewEgg since they are much cheaper. Since it won't work on my system I am trying to return it for a refund. Corsair has been very difficult to work with on returns. It has taken numerous calls to many different people. They were suppose to call me back and never did. I finally found someone that would really help me and they said they put the request in for a refund. She said once it was approved I would be sent a email with a return shipping label and instructions on returning the item. That was 3 weeks ago. Still no word. I guess they just figure I would go away. Has been a bad experience with Corsair.

Build: Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
4 GB DDR 2 PC 800 RAM (Corsair- It works)
500 GB HDD Raid 1
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: A solid product. Booting is WAY faster as well as loading the usual programs. I wouldn't say it's a total game changer, but definitely worth the asking price. And it's obviously much cheaper and easier than moving everything over to a SSD boot drive.

Cons: I previously reviewed this product and gave it one star on account of the caching software being unavailable due to server error. I intended to change the review but it appears I am unable to do so, hence this review. Still, that experience is what keeps this review from being 5 stars.

5 out of 5 eggsGamer Upgrades for a Reasonable Price

Pros: The Real benefit with this Accelerator series is if you can’t afford to buy a large SSD for your operating system and games. With Corsairs Accelerator series you can join Games faster and Get that Jet you want to fly before other people do. Or be the first to get the drop on someone in a Free for all map without paying the top dollar for a larger SSD drive.

Cons: After contacting Nvelo about how this software works I’ve concluded that there are some drawbacks.
The software “Pairs a single Cache drive with a single hard drive.” It was explained to me that it’s like a raid setup. If you have more than one drive and want this drive to cache both it won’t work properly without uninstalling and reinstalling the software on the 2nd drive. The good news is that it is in Nvelo’s road map to create a version one day that will allow you to cache more than one OS (if you dual boot) or more than one Drive. You could uninstall the caching software and reinstall it on the other drive but I’d prefer if it were able to use it just by swapping out the normal hard drive for another with alternate operating systems.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy way to upgrade your system

Pros: -Loading/boot up speed increases 5 fold
-Easy to install: plug in SATA2 or SATA3 data cable, plug in SATA power cable, install software, reboot, and done.
-No need to reinstall OS or change anything in BIOS.
-Can use a cheap HDD that has a lot of space in conjunction with this and get a lot of the benefits of a very large and expensive SSD.

Cons: -Can only use in windows 7, but not really a product problem as pre-windows 7 OS is optimized for HDDs instead of SSD.

Other Thoughts: To give an idea of how fast things boot now compared to before (just a rough estimate, didn't time it or anything):

Boot before – about 45 seconds, after 5 seconds
Starcraft 2 before – 15 seconds, after 3 seconds
Warcraft 3 before – 10 seconds, after – 2 seconds
iTunes before – 10 seconds, after – 2 seconds

Everything loads about 5x faster, which is incredible considering the cost of the upgrade.

One thing regarding the software, the download page seemed to be bugging out a bit on the website. But if you leave the entire page blank and just hit 'download', it'll start downloading the software.

Also remember to write down the key code – large and clearly if you have to! You need the key to install the software and the it is on the drive itself.
