1 out of 5 eggsSad...

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: It works fine.

Cons: Only last for 4 months.

Other Thoughts: It died after 4 months. I sent RMA and got reply very fast. But the new one cannot be detected under USB3.0, only works with USB2.0. POOR quality. I have some other flash drives from Kingston, Patriot, and Sandisk, never have any issue.

1 out of 5 eggsLook elsewhere for reliable USB 3 speeds

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Size for the price is reasonable.
In general the design is not bad, even rugged (with some exceptions. See Cons)

Cons: SLOW. I cannot put enough emphasis on this one. It's not USB 3.0 Super Speed, even though it's a USB 3.0 USB drive.
When I get a new drive I use H2testw to check speed (as well as for any errors and reliability). These are the speeds I got.
Writing speed: 16.2 MByte/s
Reading speed: 72.0 MByte/s
For anyone unsatisfied with my results using H2testw I also used ATTO and got the same results.

The slider cap is a bit loser than previous models. It feels slightly cheaper made compared to an older Slider I own. It's still pretty sturdy, but it just doesn't compare to the older one.

"B version". Stay away from any Voyager Slider drive with the CMFSL3B model number. The "B" version completely killed this drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm extremely disappointed with both Corsair and this USB 3 drive. I wish I could return this USB drive but that's not feasible. It's not worth dealing with any restocking or shipping fees.

Corsair's quality control and it's business practices towards customers (which I discovered by doing research AFTER finding out the poor performance of this USB stick)

Months ago I bought a 16GB Slider. It has the model number CMFSL3 (notice no "B"). Drive felt very well made and the slider is just tight enough that it won't accidentally slide down and expose the USB connector.

Speed tests using H2testW are listed as:
W: 22 MB/s R: 50 MB/s
I also used ATTO for comparisson and recieved similar results.

Advertised speeds (which are actually readily available for this model, unlike the "B" revision) are:
W: 20MB/s R: 70MB/s

Now as for the 32GB drive

If you look at the specs page the read/write speeds are not listed (unlike previous versions), but when you find it they are listed as
Read up to 80 MB/s
Write up to 40 MB/s

As you can see the write speed I got is FAR off from the advertised specs of 40MB/s. A newer model 32GB USB drive should be FASTER than a slightly older 16GB drive. NOT SLOWER. IMHO a USB 3 drive has to deliver AT LEAST 20MB/s write to be satisfactory as a USB 3 device.

I believe that Corsair is being dishonest with it's customers by not only failing to deliver USB 3 speeds but also being AWARE of this issue and not doing anything to address it. I found a lot of complaints about the CMFSL3B drives and even found some horrifying evidence on Corsair's own forums. Corsair's own tech support has said that CMFSL3B drives ARE SLOWER than the first gen CMFSL3 drives and CMFSL3 were discontinued because of availibity of components.

Also I had to laugh when I noticed on the package it "USB 3 High Speed". This actually should be a clear red flag. "High Speed" is actually USB 2 spec while USB 3 is "Super Speed".

What irritates me is that Corsair is essentially selling a USB 2.0 product disguised as USB 3.0. This is being dishonest to US, the consumer/customer. First gen Sliders were better made and faster. This new version fails to deliver and instead of fixing it they are just hiding the facts from us.

In Cons I mentioned lower quality. I decided to weigh the 2 drives and this is what I got.

16GB drive = 13.7 grams
32GB drive = 13.0 grams

If your wondering "Why weight?" it's because weight can be used as an indicator to tell wether cheaper or more quality materials (eg. plastics) were used in making the product. The fact that the CMFSL3B 32GB drive weighs slightly less than the older 16GB may lend weight to the fact that the drive does feel more cheaply made (See what I did there?)

My closing thought is NO. Don't buy this drive. Don't buy ANY Voyager Slider drive with the CMFSL3B model number. Stay far away from them.

Shame on you Corsair.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible experience - EDC beware

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Decent speeds

Cons: Not sturdy at all, this little metal part of the USB connector sticks out. Absolutely horrible for EDC.

Other Thoughts: During the ice storm in the East lately, I was doing some work with this in my front usb 3.0 header. The power shut off, and I was without it for 4 days. I left the usb in my computer thinking "Ah screw it, nothing I can do with it now" and ejected it this afternoon. The metal part bent on a 45 degree angle, and I had to bend it back. The weight of itself actually made it bend, and that's dissapointing.

The USB connector sticks out, so if you try to wear it on a keyring (good luck getting it on there anyways, little hole is too small for a decent strength ring) it's going to constantly hit around your keys.

2 out of 5 eggsGo with the non-slider

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Corsair... so I would hope it lasts

Cons: USB port is exposed even when slid in, no cover for it.
Lighweight, feels cheap.

Other Thoughts: Coming from the "CORSAIR Flash Voyager" that broke after a few years, I thought I could expect that kind of quality. This is not it. The keyring holder is made of plastic, thats bound to break off. (Maybe its not for keyrings) But I don't feel comfortable leaving in my pocket knowing the dust and lint can get into the USB socket because there is no cover for it. It just slides in.

I expected better from Corsair. Spend the extra $3 and get the CORSAIR Flash Voyager. Model: CMFVY3S-32GB I wish I did.

3 out of 5 eggsResearch First

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Faster than 2.0, and no cap to lose. 3.0
Average transfer speed on 3.0 is about 35 MB/s

Cons: Doesn't fit on large key rings, if you want true 3.0 speed then look at reviews on several websites

For Techs it can be formatted to FAT32 and NFTS for older Macs and Windows machines.

READ REVIEWS FIRST!!

Other Thoughts: I misread the speeds when I purchased it. I was prone to Patriot because of my 2.0 Patriot XT drive but was looking at about 4 different drives at once. When I got it and tested it, I wasn't impressed, compared to 2.0 it is still faster and it will hit on average 20MB/s transfer speeds on a 2.0 port.

I didn't research reviews, I was going off of information that was 2-3 years old about 2.0 brands.

5 out of 5 eggsLiked the first one so much I got another

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Slider case protects the working end.
32GB capacity at a good price.

Cons: None, it does just what it's supposed to.

Other Thoughts: I've had one of these for a while and it's been extremely reliable so I picked up another for my wife when her old thumb drive finally gave up the ghost.

5 out of 5 eggsVoyager Slider

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: Good speed, feels durable. It's really what you'd expect.

Cons: The sliding mechanism is interesting. It clicks into the out position, which is nice, but not into the closed position. So, if thing is in your bag or pocket, the USB often pokes out and this could possibly lead to damage. So far it's fine and I'm not too worried about it.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too shabby on the downstream; upstream could be faster

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Slider 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFSL3B-32GB

Pros: With a current promotion of 35% this drive is a good deal. It performs better than a USB 2.0 thumb drive in some circumstances and in others its only slightly above a USB 2.0. It has a retractable slider to protect the USB connector and a notch for a lanyard, you could try a keychain loop but it will be a tight fit. The blue indicator light is nothing short of bright.

Cons: Perfomance is not up to par with other USB 3.0 thumb drives but taking the price into consideration that concern evens out. I'd rate it in the 40% to 50% percentile when compared with other USB 3.0 thumb drives I've had experienced with; namely the higher end and more expensive Adata & Patriot thumb drives.

Transfer speed from the thumb drive via a USB 3.0 motherboard port to a Samsung 840 SSD was good; an average speed of 76 MB/s. Transfer speed in the reverse from the the SSD to the thumb drive averaged 16 to 19 MB/s. At first it would write at 50 MB/s for the first few seconds then it would settle down to the 16 to 19 MB/s range. Note that the SSD is SATA-600 and connected to the motherboard on 6GB port.

Transfer speed from the thumb drive via a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard to a Western Digital Green 7200rpm mechanical hard drive was again good at 70 MB/s. Transfer speed in the reverse from the HDD to the thumb drive was a stunted 11 to 16 MB/s. Again, the speed would be higher the first few seconds and the quickly settle down to the 11 to 16 MB/s range.

It appears the transfer speed from USB 3.0 to device has a maximum expectation of 76 MB/s.

Other Thoughts: Transferring data from the drive is a good experience; vice a versa it is better than USB 2.0 but not by as much as I or one would like to expect. Playing video files directly off the thumb drive was as fast as one would need it to be whether using Media Player, Quicktime or VLC.
