2 out of 5 eggsDamaged after less than a week

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: updated review see below

Cons: This is an update to a previous review:

I was originally impressed with this drive until i got it out of my pocket today (less than a week old) to use and found the USB connector to be completely collapsed. Luckily I was able to bend it back and it will still function but I will not put it back on my key chain after that. I also did not put it through any uncommon use, just in my pocket over the weekend.

Now with the result of just one week of use and the failure to hold up to that coupled with the poor write speeds, this is now just a sub par USB 3.0 drive.

If your getting this for key-chain use i would not recommend it.

1 out of 5 eggsVery poor, recommend against purchashing

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Very small, with a keychain ring attached

0.5" wide x 0.2" high x 1.4" long ( 2.5" long including strap)

Cons: It pains me to write this review because I know Corsair makes good products, I own quite a few including several other USB flash drives.

It is hit or miss whether this drive will even be detected. I tried every single USB port on several computers (both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports), and had about a 50% success rate of detection by just inserting it. Wiggling it around a bit got it to mount on a couple more ports, but who wants to risk that connection?

In USB 3.0 ports that is did connect with, it almost always connected at USB 2.0 speeds, posting the warning "This device can perform faster..." Even after finally getting to to connect as a USB 3.0 device, the performance was abysmal:

I would like to note that I have several USB 3.0 devices that I have no problem using, so it's not my hardware that is issue.

Other Thoughts: Even if I got a unit with a bum connector, this item is still twice as expensive as other similar items here on Newegg, and it's claims of providing USB 3.0 speeds are quite a bit off the mark.

I'm sure Corsair will respond shortly apologizing for my bad experience, and if they want to swap this one with another one, I will be happy to test it and share the results, but based on other reviews, I don't expect the results to be any different.

4 out of 5 eggsGood little Drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Very well designed. Tough construction. Extremely light and tiny. One of the best designed USB’s I’ve seen for keychain use. The Rubber used to attach to the Keychain swivels and stretches.

Cons: 2.0 speeds with some exceptions while writing. Decent read speeds.

Other Thoughts: So others have complained of “cheap construction”, I could not see it in the one I was sent. I squeezed it, tried to bend it and pulled on it. It held up great when applied to medium pressure on it. Obviously this tiny USB is not going to take a hammer strike but I personally feel if used and carried with normal use, it will be just fine in your pocket for a while.

I love the size and the Rubber strap. Some of the USB sticks I’ve used in the past are attached directly to the keying causing it to be ridged, or on a chain with no flex ability. Even the rubber swivels at the point it attaches to the USB stick. I feel this is designed as well as it could be while allowing for protection from almost any angle it gets crammed in or pulled in.

As far as the speed goes. That is the area where this is lacking. But keep in mind it’s a very portable drive so that does bring its advantages. While reading data it has decent speeds, coming in at around 150MBps on average.

But writes on the other hand are were this falls into the deep end. For small files (30 – 100MB) it’s almost instant. This device will burst through the first 100MB or so at great speeds and then fall down to about 21MBps instantly and stay there. So if you are planning on moving and using small files with this then you should be fine, but if you plan on actually using this to move large amounts of data just be sure to know the initial writes are going to be poor on this drive.

All that being said I love this drive. I love the design and the size. And while the speeds are a little slow, I can live with it. I was really hoping this drive would be a WIN-WIN for size and speed but I guess I’ll have to keep looking. Overall I would get this again or recommend it purely on the portability and design of this drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderfully Tiny

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: I found this charming Flash Drive to be very useful and has a great amount of space for its size. I put it on my keychain, loaded some files on it, and forgot about it. It's so tiny that it's easy to forget about amid my myriad of keys. A very convenient pendrive.

I really like the rubber holder on this, made it easy to just grab my keys and tug, and the drive easily pops out of whatever system I use it on.

It's also a hearty little pendrive with it's metal body and the rubber holder is nice and thick with just the right amount of elasticity.

Transfer speeds are good whether it be USB 3.0 or USB 2.1.

Cons: On my heavy keys, I get concerned in the cases where this would hang off the computer and dangle in the air. I wish there was a quick-release function where the drive disconnects from the rubber. Short of that, this is a fine pendrive.

Other Thoughts: I love how useful it is to basically have a pendrive on me at all times that doesn't get in the way of my keys. I can't speak for everyone, but when I'm not home, I always have my keys with me.

3 out of 5 eggsFinicky

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Size/Weight
Sleek Looking
Durable overall
Durable Finish - barely marked after spending a few weeks attached to my house keys.
Fair speeds considering its size
5 year warranty

Cons: Drive was very finicky.
Kept disconnecting during transfers.
Required the drive to be repaired after it disconnected/reconnected, but the repair would fail half the time typically requiring it to be physically removed from the USB slot and reinstalled.
Did not like my Vantec UGT-MH430U3 USB 3.0 hub which has worked flawlessly with countless other items. While using this hub is where I encountered the most problems.

Other Thoughts: For storage devices I typically put them through their paces on several different machines to see what they're about. Unfortunately this little bugger didn't want to work consistently enough for me to do so. It would work fine for a write transfer here, but then fail there; or vice versa.

I definitely don't have 'average' or 'low-end' PC's so I know that wasn't the problem.

When it did work the speed was more than acceptable when you consider how compact this thing is. Some may want more speed out of it, but compromises must be made when the drive is this tiny.

Newegg chose extremely poor packaging for my drive. It was literally in a piece of cardboard. The packaging material was very thin cardboard which had adhesive on two sides; slap them together and a small thin item can be shipped in it. Problem with this is that it got a beat down in transit, and several heavy items were likely dropped/scraped/dragged across it judging by how jacked up it was upon arrival.

The UPS label was barely recognizable as a UPS label because of the damage to the 'package'. This caused a co-worker to throw it in the garbage, since he assumed it was just a beat up piece of cardboard. I was fortunate enough to A) check the tracking information to realize it had been delivered the previous day, and B) realize this before the trash was taken out.

A padded envelope would have been a much better choice of packing material!

5 out of 5 eggsSaved

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Some will love the physical size of this drive and some will not. It is sturdy in its design and works quite well. Some drives like this you have to struggle trying to insert them into a USB port. The design of this drive is quite unique, while it looks similar to some mini drives it is longer, but lighter, and has a sturdy rubber lanyard for attachment to a key ring or other item. The transfer and write speed; I have used this drive in USB 2 and 3 ports and did not notice a great slowdown in the transfer rate. Used it on computers installed with Windows 7 and 8, the drive was recognized in Windows 8 machines, scanned, and displayed in a matter of seconds. The Windows 7 machines will be discussed in other thoughts. Overall Corsair has a great product here, I highly recommend this drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: On the Window the drive is recognized sometimes using USB 3 ports, at other times it is not recognized. When it is recognized it will give you a message that it can perform faster in a USB 3 port. This message was seen on three Windows 7 computers and 2 notebook computers. When plugged into a USB 2 port you will receive the same message, but it is always recognized and brought up on the desktop. Window 7 users should take this into consideration. This is not enough for me to take away an egg. The size of this drive will have some liking and some not. It is light weight and perfect for a key ring of lanyard. While it is perfect in this manner it is not if carried in your pocket alone, the weight could result in you forgetting it is there and could end up at the cleaners or in the wash. If you are a computer repairer, teacher, instructor, photographer, or involved in any other business this is the drive for transferring large chunks of information. From a client’s hard drive for safe keeping or for storing needed files. It does not take up a lot of room in your lock box or safe and is idea for maintaining need to know information on your person. You will not find a better drive at this capacity.

2 out of 5 eggsVoyager mini 32 gig.

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Small form factor
A key ring you will need so you don't lose it.
USB 3
Durable .
28.8 Gigs useable.

Cons: The best write speed I got was twenty megabytes constant. It would start at 24MBs and go down till it reached 20. Read was only maxed at 152MBs. This is not USB 3 speeds. To me USB 3.0 speeds are in the high 30MB range to 60Mb.

Other Thoughts: I have other corsair USB 3 drives I tested this against and all other USB 3 drives outperformed it. I don't know if they changed the memory in them or not. All my others maxed in the 40's with a constant speed of 39.7 at the lowest. The speed I got from this one is on par with a few of my best USB 2.0 drives in a USB 3.0 port. I have no less than 10 USB 2.0 drives and 5 USB 3.0 drives this was the slowest among the USB 3.0 It was the fastest among the USB 2.0 drives. For the price you can do a lot better in speed even at half this price I wouldn't consider this a deal. I tried to find out if they changed memory in this from the normal ones they put out and I could not find the information I was looking for. So with all things considered get a real USB 3.0 speed drive.

3 out of 5 eggsNice design... but

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Nice compact design.
Keyfob with small keyring.
Definite tight fit.
Detected quickly and easily in Windows, Linux and OS X.

Cons: Slow compared to other USB drives.
No Activity Light.
Metal casing scratches easily.
Rubber longevity? See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: The Corsair mini 32GB USB 3.0 is faster than a USB 2.0 drive but not nearly as fast as expected. Crystalmark gave this drive a seq read speed of 41.6 MB/s (500MB data) and a seq write of 14.91 MB/s. Using the same port and testing regimen with a USB 2.0 drive yielded figures of 20.82 MB/s and 7.33 MB/s read and write respectively. So the Corsair has about twice the speed of a comparable USB 2.0 drive. I ran the same test again using a Silicon Power 32GB USB 3.0 drive and got 87.9 MB/s and 55.83 MB/s read/write speeds, so the Corsair is significantly slower than this especially when it came to writing to the disk.

The only advantages of this drive over the Silicon Power would be the physical size and the keyring. The Corsair is about a quarter of the size of the Silicon Power, and to be honest the Silicon Power wouldn't win any beauty or indeed design contests, it is however, fast. The keyring is an excellent buying point but I wonder as to the rubber attachment's longevity, also the metal surrounding the drive is attractively finished but seems to scratch very easily and when hung on a keyring, with a bunch of keys, I have no doubt it will degrade rapidly. The lack of an activity light is a major issue for Mac users, Macs lie, a Mac will display a flash drive as ejected before it has finished flushing the drive cache, checking the drive's activity light is the only way to be sure the drive is actually ready to be physically removed.

If you're looking for speed I'd look elsewhere, if you want a drive that can be kept on your keyring for convenience this may well be your solution.

4 out of 5 eggsBasic usb 3.0 flash drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: This flash drive is quite small being a mini. It has brushed aluminum casing that looks nice, and a rubber piece with key ring loop attached. Seems durable enough even though I didn't put it through a rigorous test to see how long it lasts physically.
I did put it through plenty of read and write tests using it in usb 2.0 and 3.0 ports, using varying file sizes from 500mb up too 4gb.

USB 2.0 (4gb file)
read = 145 to 185 mb/s
write = 11 to 16 mb/s average time was about 3 minutes

USB 3.0 (4gb file)
read = 145 to 185 mb/s
write = 16 to 22 mb/s average time was about 2 and half minutes.

As you can see the read speeds between 2.0 and 3.0 were pretty much identical, while you do gain a little bit of write speed with usb 3.0 over 2.0, But not a whole lot.
On average the read speed of the 4gb file transfer to my SSD drive was about 10 seconds, and write speed of the 4gb file transfer from my SSD to flash drive via usb 2.0 or 3.0 was an average of 2 and a half minutes to 3 minutes.

The smaller files I used for this test were 500mb and 1gb the write speeds were the same usb 2.0 11 to 16mb/s and usb 3.0 16 to 22mb/s but with faster times, while the read speed of the transfers back to my SSD were virtually instant.

Cons: The only con I have with this 32gb mini flash drive is the inconsistent write speeds they were up and down, they would start at 44 to 60mb/s then drop down to 11 to 22mb/s depending on usb 2.0 or 3.0 and fluctuate up and down constantly. Hence the 4 egg review.

Other Thoughts: All in all if you want a usb 3.0 flash drive this will certainly do what you need it too.
It works fine for transferring files to and from PCs.
Its very small so its not an eye sore like some bigger flash drives, easy to store in pretty much any place you might need too.
As far as durability it seems to be rugged enough but as with anything only time will tell.
I recommend this mini flash drive, and its corsair so you get a great company to back your warranty to boot.

4 out of 5 eggsA Good USB 3.0 Drive... For Reading

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: It's mind-blowing how much data can be crammed into such small devices these days. This USB drive is smaller than it appears in the photos and it feels so light you would think it could just blow away.

That said, let's get into the nitty gritty of what this drive is really about. It's a USB 3.0 thumb drive with a lot of space. One expects USB 3.0 speed and the storage space as advertised.

On the storage side, most of it is there. The drive is advertised as 32 GB which translates to approximately 29.8 GiB in a perfect world. The drive arrives formatted FAT32 with 28.8 GiB available so it's a little bit off from the theoretical space. I'm happy to report that the drive does NOT come pre-loaded with icon files, encryption programs, pdf instructions, etc, etc. taking up room. It's just an empty drive and that's the way I like it.

On the performance side, I found this drive to perform quite well in both USB 2.0 and 3.0. Reminder: the theoretical maximum speed of USB 2.0 and 3.0 are 60 MB/s and 600 MB/s, respectively. I ran the ATTO synthetic benchmark on the drive and here are the results:

USB 2.0
Read = 45 MB/s
Write = 16 MB/s

USB 3.0
Read = 149 MB/s
Write = 20 MB/s

I also transferred a 1.4 GB folder containing different sizes of files to and from this drive using both USB 2.0 and 3.0 for a 'real world' test. Results:

USB 2.0
Read = 42 MB/s
Write = 17 MB/s

USB 3.0
Read = 146 MB/s
Write = 22 MB/s

As you can see above, the read speed using USB 3.0 is worth the upgrade from USB 2.0 (nearly 3.5x faster), however there is little to gain in write speed.

Cons: Its brushed aluminum casing is sexy and light. However, just inserting the drive into USB ports introduced dents and scratches in the aluminum casing.

The drive comes with a key ring and it seems counter intuitive that a device that may share time with metal pointy objects in your pocket is not rugged enough to handle it.

I realize that it's currently trendy to make our cool little electronic gadgets pretty to look at, but I dislike sacrificing function for looks. This USB drive is a looker, but in a short time it's going to be like that cute girl you knew in high school who's a bit ragged now.

Other Thoughts: Long story short: this is a very nice looking drive that has good read speed but so-so write speed. Don't expect to insert this drive in your computer, load up a 20 GB queue of music to for your road trip, and expect it to be done transferring if you are in a hurry.
