3 out of 5 eggsNice design... but

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Nice compact design.
Keyfob with small keyring.
Definite tight fit.
Detected quickly and easily in Windows, Linux and OS X.

Cons: Slow compared to other USB drives.
No Activity Light.
Metal casing scratches easily.
Rubber longevity? See other thoughts.

Other Thoughts: The Corsair mini 32GB USB 3.0 is faster than a USB 2.0 drive but not nearly as fast as expected. Crystalmark gave this drive a seq read speed of 41.6 MB/s (500MB data) and a seq write of 14.91 MB/s. Using the same port and testing regimen with a USB 2.0 drive yielded figures of 20.82 MB/s and 7.33 MB/s read and write respectively. So the Corsair has about twice the speed of a comparable USB 2.0 drive. I ran the same test again using a Silicon Power 32GB USB 3.0 drive and got 87.9 MB/s and 55.83 MB/s read/write speeds, so the Corsair is significantly slower than this especially when it came to writing to the disk.

The only advantages of this drive over the Silicon Power would be the physical size and the keyring. The Corsair is about a quarter of the size of the Silicon Power, and to be honest the Silicon Power wouldn't win any beauty or indeed design contests, it is however, fast. The keyring is an excellent buying point but I wonder as to the rubber attachment's longevity, also the metal surrounding the drive is attractively finished but seems to scratch very easily and when hung on a keyring, with a bunch of keys, I have no doubt it will degrade rapidly. The lack of an activity light is a major issue for Mac users, Macs lie, a Mac will display a flash drive as ejected before it has finished flushing the drive cache, checking the drive's activity light is the only way to be sure the drive is actually ready to be physically removed.

If you're looking for speed I'd look elsewhere, if you want a drive that can be kept on your keyring for convenience this may well be your solution.

4 out of 5 eggsBasic usb 3.0 flash drive

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: This flash drive is quite small being a mini. It has brushed aluminum casing that looks nice, and a rubber piece with key ring loop attached. Seems durable enough even though I didn't put it through a rigorous test to see how long it lasts physically.
I did put it through plenty of read and write tests using it in usb 2.0 and 3.0 ports, using varying file sizes from 500mb up too 4gb.

USB 2.0 (4gb file)
read = 145 to 185 mb/s
write = 11 to 16 mb/s average time was about 3 minutes

USB 3.0 (4gb file)
read = 145 to 185 mb/s
write = 16 to 22 mb/s average time was about 2 and half minutes.

As you can see the read speeds between 2.0 and 3.0 were pretty much identical, while you do gain a little bit of write speed with usb 3.0 over 2.0, But not a whole lot.
On average the read speed of the 4gb file transfer to my SSD drive was about 10 seconds, and write speed of the 4gb file transfer from my SSD to flash drive via usb 2.0 or 3.0 was an average of 2 and a half minutes to 3 minutes.

The smaller files I used for this test were 500mb and 1gb the write speeds were the same usb 2.0 11 to 16mb/s and usb 3.0 16 to 22mb/s but with faster times, while the read speed of the transfers back to my SSD were virtually instant.

Cons: The only con I have with this 32gb mini flash drive is the inconsistent write speeds they were up and down, they would start at 44 to 60mb/s then drop down to 11 to 22mb/s depending on usb 2.0 or 3.0 and fluctuate up and down constantly. Hence the 4 egg review.

Other Thoughts: All in all if you want a usb 3.0 flash drive this will certainly do what you need it too.
It works fine for transferring files to and from PCs.
Its very small so its not an eye sore like some bigger flash drives, easy to store in pretty much any place you might need too.
As far as durability it seems to be rugged enough but as with anything only time will tell.
I recommend this mini flash drive, and its corsair so you get a great company to back your warranty to boot.

4 out of 5 eggsA Good USB 3.0 Drive... For Reading

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: It's mind-blowing how much data can be crammed into such small devices these days. This USB drive is smaller than it appears in the photos and it feels so light you would think it could just blow away.

That said, let's get into the nitty gritty of what this drive is really about. It's a USB 3.0 thumb drive with a lot of space. One expects USB 3.0 speed and the storage space as advertised.

On the storage side, most of it is there. The drive is advertised as 32 GB which translates to approximately 29.8 GiB in a perfect world. The drive arrives formatted FAT32 with 28.8 GiB available so it's a little bit off from the theoretical space. I'm happy to report that the drive does NOT come pre-loaded with icon files, encryption programs, pdf instructions, etc, etc. taking up room. It's just an empty drive and that's the way I like it.

On the performance side, I found this drive to perform quite well in both USB 2.0 and 3.0. Reminder: the theoretical maximum speed of USB 2.0 and 3.0 are 60 MB/s and 600 MB/s, respectively. I ran the ATTO synthetic benchmark on the drive and here are the results:

USB 2.0
Read = 45 MB/s
Write = 16 MB/s

USB 3.0
Read = 149 MB/s
Write = 20 MB/s

I also transferred a 1.4 GB folder containing different sizes of files to and from this drive using both USB 2.0 and 3.0 for a 'real world' test. Results:

USB 2.0
Read = 42 MB/s
Write = 17 MB/s

USB 3.0
Read = 146 MB/s
Write = 22 MB/s

As you can see above, the read speed using USB 3.0 is worth the upgrade from USB 2.0 (nearly 3.5x faster), however there is little to gain in write speed.

Cons: Its brushed aluminum casing is sexy and light. However, just inserting the drive into USB ports introduced dents and scratches in the aluminum casing.

The drive comes with a key ring and it seems counter intuitive that a device that may share time with metal pointy objects in your pocket is not rugged enough to handle it.

I realize that it's currently trendy to make our cool little electronic gadgets pretty to look at, but I dislike sacrificing function for looks. This USB drive is a looker, but in a short time it's going to be like that cute girl you knew in high school who's a bit ragged now.

Other Thoughts: Long story short: this is a very nice looking drive that has good read speed but so-so write speed. Don't expect to insert this drive in your computer, load up a 20 GB queue of music to for your road trip, and expect it to be done transferring if you are in a hurry.

1 out of 5 eggsHow can I fail thee ?- let me count the ways...

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: You will now have a Corsair account as you need one to do an RMA.
5 year warranty

Cons: Only formats as 20.xGB - Regardless of Linux or Windows Operating system and partition type.
Not faster than my Patriot or Sandisk 16gb USB 2.0 drives.
Metal housing paint scuffs off easily after 1st insertion and removal.
Not seen by finder in OSX

Other Thoughts: Corsair has better Flash drives than the Voyager Mini series.
How is USB "universal" if a Mac can't read from it?

3 out of 5 eggsNice, But Slow.

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: For a 32gb USB 3.0 drive it is very compact. It will fit anywhere on your computer without removing other hardware. The industrial look and metal casing gives one the feeling of durability. The key ring is nice and fits a lanyard nicely. Leave it to Corsair to design a great look and feel to this product.

Cons: I was very excited to have a USB 3.0 flash drive as I was expecting USB 3.0 speed. As other reviewers have noted, the speed is underwhelming at best. While it is a bit faster than USB 2.0 drives, the difference is marginal at best.

The key ring is nice, but I would have to remove it prior to use because my keys would get in the way negating the compact design.

I would prefer a cap on the end of the unit to keep dust and dirt out of the flash drive.

I don't understand why this flash drive doesn't deliver 3.0 speed. This is a big negative for me.

Other Thoughts: The 5 year warranty is a nice touch. I have flash drives that are over 5 years old and they work fine. I guess if you use this flash drive every day, the long warranty is a big plus.

I have 4 hard drives in my computer and 1 external drive. For backups and storage, space isn't an issue. I work from home, so I seldom use a USB flash drive to transport data out of the office. My primary use for a flash drive is to transfer data from my wife's laptop to the printer and update the BIOS on all the computers in the house.

5 out of 5 eggsGood USB Drive with keyring and excellent read speeds.

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Sleek industrial design with included keyring. Good thing too since this drive is soo small that it'll be easy to lose.

32 GB is more than enough storage space for me.

Excellent read speed, benchmarked speeds where leaps and bounds better than my previous "large" storage 16gb SanDisk Drive.

5 year warranty. More than generous IMO for a USB drive.

Cons: Small size makes it easy to lose but that's why the keyring is included. In my case, I have a lot of keys so I don't want my keys hanging on the USB port so I attached a souvenir style keyring to it.

Other Thoughts: Benchmark using Roadkil's Disk Speed 2.0 on a USB3.0 Port :

Access time: 0.53 ms, Cache speed 85.67 mb/s, Max Read Speed 83.32 mb/s, Overall score 23575.8

Random Reads 1kb Blocks, 1.82mb/s, 4k Blocks 6.60mb/s, 16k blocks 20.25mb/s, 128kb blocks 55.61 mb/s, 1024kb blocks 77.94mbs.

Comapred to a SanDisk Micro Cruiser 16gb (USB2.0 drive on a USB3.0 port):

Access Time: 0.58ms, Cashed Speed 45.44 mb/s, Max Read Speed 25.24, Overall score,

1kb block 1.59 mb/s, 4k block 5.76 mb/s, 16k 1.44 mb/s, 128kb block 15.10 mb/s.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Pretty fast when used in 3.0 port. I like the size and the fact that it comes with a key-ring already on it.

I ran a few tests and here are my results:

3GB file plugged into USB 3.0 port - Approx 65-70mb/s - READ
3GB file plugged into USB 3.0 port - Approx 16-17mb/s - WRITE

3GB file plugged into USB 2.0 port - Approx 32-35mb/s - READ
3GB file plugged into USB 2.0 port - Approx 13-15mb/s - WRITE

So as you can see the write speeds aren't that great but the read speeds are pretty nice.

All-in-all I like it!

Cons: Write speeds not very fast

Other Thoughts: I think it's a nice little flash drive. I'd buy it.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed

This review is from: CORSAIR Voyager Mini 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model CMFMINI3-32GB

Pros: Light weight, Elegant

Cons: Performance, I have tried this flash drive in my PC and my notebook, however i get a mere 11 MB/s file transfer, which absolutely is disappointing. I have a Patriot USB 3.0, which gives me data transfer speed of 40 MB/s to 90 MB/s.

My USB 2.0 (Sandisk) flash drive gives me more transfer bandwidth and for a USB 3.0 flash drive, this is not acceptable.

Other Thoughts: I am considering returning the item.
