4 out of 5 eggsGood for the Price

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: -$29 at the time of review is a good price for a 64GB USB 3.0 drive
-It's a compact drive and has a solid feel.

Cons: -Since it's a slider, the port is not fully covered when you aren't using it
-For the price, I dont' think the speed is a big con, but it doesn't take full advantage of USB 3.0.
-Write ~ 20MB/s
-Read ~ 80MB/s

4 out of 5 eggsCheap but fairly good

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: The first pro I noticed was the 5 year warranty on the package. Not sure if this is standard or not, but it's nice to have on flash drives.

This is a smaller flash drive which is nice. Also, I found that this does not run too hot even under a high load.

List:
-Very small
-Doesn't run hot
-Cheap

Cons: No read/write indicator light. And even more importantly, the read/write speeds aren't very good.

USB 3.0
HD Tune: Corsair Voyager SliderX1 Benchmark
Transfer Rate Minimum : 54.1 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 85.6 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 81.0 MB/sec
Access Time : 0.6 ms
Burst Rate : 32.2 MB/sec

Other Thoughts: This is a pretty good flash drive for the price. It doesn't have very good speeds but is does not cost much for the memory and reliability of Corsair (from past experience)

5 out of 5 eggsFast Enough For The Price

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: - Compact design which shouldn't have trouble reaching most ports.
- Slide cover to protect the USB port which features rubberized black plastic finish and ergonomic grip grooves along the sides. It feels nice and functions well.
- Key ring hole.
- High enough storage capacity for most data needs.
- USB 3.0 allows for higher file transfer speeds.

Cons: - The drive doesn't make great use of USB 3.0. Writing several large and small files to the drive resulted in an average transfer rate of around 17MB/s with a maximum of around 19MB/s. Reading from the drive wasn't quite as bad but still never reported speeds faster than 73MB/s. Average reads were closer to 65MB/s.

Other Thoughts: Personally, I want more speed out of a USB 3.0 flash module, but the price isn't bad here. You get somewhat decent speed, great capacity, in addition to compact durability. It's a good deal if you don't require the speed.

The drive is preformatted using FAT32 which does not support files larger than 4GB. Unless the drive will be used on an unsupported system I generally suggest formatting to NTFS or exFAT.

I noticed another reviewer questioning the 58GB reported capacity. This is normal and is the result of how computers calculate storage capacity vs the way storage capacity is sold. The drive certainly has around 64,000,000,000 bytes available. However, a kilobyte is not 1000 bytes, it is 1024 bytes. Similarly, a megabyte is 1024 kilobytes, not 1000. And so on... The number to remember is 1024, not 1000. So, if you do the math you'll find that 64,000,000,000 bytes comes out to 59.6GB. All drive capacities are calculated this way.

4 out of 5 eggsStandard USB 3.0 drive

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: 5 Year Warranty - It seems like reliability in this price segment isn't that great, so having a long warranty is a huge plus.

This is a very sturdy (not flimsy) drive. Feels well made, after sliding it back and forth quite a bit it still feels solid just the way it did the day I received it.

Good read performance - averaging 80 MB/s for both small picture/music files and large zip/movie files.

Cons: Read speed never achieves the fill rated speed - I've read this is only the case on a Windows PC though...

Slow write speed - exFat performance is in the 16-18 MB/s range and NTFS is slower at 11-12 MB/s. No reason to use NTFS from what I can tell.

Other Thoughts: There aren't too many bad things to say about this drive. Sure, write speed could be faster, but then you are looking at a different price segment also.

There also seems to be quite a bit of price fluctuation with the 32 and 64 GB drives in this segment, and this drive is one of the more pricier drives in the segment. There isn't much of a performance advantage (most in this range have slow writes), but the real advantage is the warranty and the sturdy feel of this drive. It doesn't feel cheap, and has a great warranty also - premium features in this segment.

5 out of 5 eggsNice USB 3.0 Flash Drive

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: • Speedier than USB 2.0
• Compact design
• Sturdy
• Clicks into place when opened or closed fully, providing haptic feedback.
• Key ring hole for carrying convenience
• Plug and play
• Storage capacity

Cons: No flash drive is as versatile as memory cards in my opinion. Not the fault of this drive. Just general con for this style.

Other Thoughts: Reports 57.6 GB space.
Recognized immediately (Win 7 64 bit).

Transfers tested with DVD Video files.
4.00 GB (4,299,165,696 bytes)
9 Files.
5 min 30 secs to write from SSD (OS drive) to flash drive.

1 min 37 secs to write from Flash drive back to same SSD.

For reference:
30 secs to write from SSD to another internal standard 7200rpm hard drive.

Just under 30 secs to write from the same internal drive back to SSD (OS drive).

After all these transfers file maintained its integrity with no issues.

If you like flash drives you will like this USB 3.0 model. I feel it is well constructed and the design keeps the USB connector out of harm's way while traveling.

4 out of 5 eggsNot too bad, just a bit slow on the writes

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: - Sliding case to expose connector
- Fairly high storage size
- USB 3.0 - makes reads a bit better.

Cons: - Slow writes - ~17 MB/s. Nothing to scoff at.
- Somewhat slow reads - ~75 MB/s.

Other Thoughts: The design is a bit boxy, but it's nothing too bad - I can still see this as an issue however due to its relative size, so if you're space constrained around your USB 3.0 port, then you might have a bad time with this one.

I've measured reads at around 75 MB/s and writes at around 17 MB/s. I don't have much of a comparison against USB 3.0 flash drives, but it IS still not that much better than if it was plugged into a USB 2.0 slot (perhaps the reads would be much better over USB 3.0, but definitely not the writes), and it still seems a bit slow. Other reviews suggest that this is about midrange.

The price does make it worth it though - but don't expect a lot of performance out of it. I'd imagine you'd want to use it for transferring files occasionally between computers, and that's it - the write speeds make it a bit painful to do any sustained writes or transferring large files often to the device.

4 out of 5 eggsGood midrange drive

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: Fairly compact capless design, this mid-range flash drive is a great way to update your aging USB 2.0 drive for a reasonable price.

The sliding design protects the USB connector when not in use, so you can toss this in your computer bag, purse or pocket. There is also a place for you to connect a lanyard or keychain, if you like.

The sliding portion is non-slip coated and has knurling on the sides, so its easy to open and close with two hands, but takes some practice to do it one handed.

Drive comes preformatted FAT32, and is nice and empty, ready to go. No "included" software junk. Of course, if you want to save big files on it, you'll want to reformat to NTFS or exFAT. I used exFAT.

Cons: Transfer speed. As a mid-range drive, its speed is not the fastest, but is almost certainly faster than your old USB 2.0 drive. Using a computer with a known fast USB 3.0 port, I measured 78 MB/s read and 17 MB/s write speeds.

The write speed was a little disappointing comparing to other drives in its size/price class, but the difference isn't huge. (I'm calling this price class "midrange" which to me means a value priced drive from a name brand with a real warranty.) So your decision to buy this is probably still based on price, design, and brand.

The design is boxy, which is typical of corsair, and reminds me a bit of 1980's TRON video game. A bit wider than some other drives, it may have a fit issue for some, but it wasn't a problem for me.

Other Thoughts: Like the design? Need a big flash drive for short money? Is it on sale? If the answer is yes to these, this might be your next flash drive.

Those who want more performance might step up to the well rated Slider X2 version of this drive, which, for a few dollars more, promises *much* higher speeds. "You pays your money and makes your choices."

I compared this drive head to head with a Sandisk Ultra USB 3.0 64GB sliding drive -- a very similar drive: Roughly the same physical size, sliding case design, USB 3.0 with similar advertised speed and typical price, and also released recently.

The Sandisk was about 5-10% faster in my measurements, mostly in improved write speed -- enough to measure, but not enough to notice in actual use, I suspect. The Sandisk design is more '90s than '80s, which is to say its less boxy. The Sandisk sliding mechanism while easier to "one-hand" may be more difficult to use by folks with bigger hands or arthritis :). YMMV.

Catch either on sale for about twenty bucks and it's a no-brainer. Ask yourself, why are you still walking around with a 4GB USB 2.0 flash drive in your pocket when you can carry 64 GB for the cost of a yuppie food coupon?

4 out of 5 eggsNice Drive for a Nice Price

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: I am reviewing the 64GB stick of the Corsair Flash Voyager Series USB 3.0 drives. Out of the package you get the USB drive itself and a saftey/warranty guide. Plugging it in suprised me with it's actual capacity the computer is showing (see cons) but through most of my tests this drive provided some decent results on reading data from it. Construction-wise, the slider to show/hide the connector is very nice and sturdy. It does not feel like it will wear down like other drives I have had.

Here are the results from my Crystal Disk Mark tests:

Computer: HP Envy Touch 15inch i5 2400M processor 8GB of RAM

Ran 3 tests over USB 2.0 port:

Sequential - 43.33 MB/s Read - 15.59 MB/s Write
512K - 39.98 MB/s Read - .529 MB/s Write
4K - 6.557 MB/s Read - .024 MB/s Write
4KQD32 - 7.001 MB/s Read - .034 MB/s Write
___________________________________________________

Computer: Custom Built i7 4770k OC'd to 4.0 GHz processor 16GB of RAM

Ran 3 tests over USB 3.0 port:

Sequential - 83.32 MB/s Read - 19.01 MB/s Write
512K - 78.19 MB/s Read - .527 MB/s Write
4K - 8.967 MB/s Read - .050 MB/s Write
4KQD32 - 9.045 MB/s Read - .022 MB/s Write

Cons: So when first plugging in the drive it suprised me that I only had 58GB of storage avalable. I am unsure why 8GB is missing from my drive. I could understand if 1-2GB wee used for some bloat-ware, but there is nothing on this drive. So, this is very strange and I am unsure if it is intended by Cosair. Next con is the writing to the drive is somewhat slow. When transferring a 2GB movie to the drive it was writing at 15-20 MB/s and took about 2 minutes on my custom built pc listed in the pros over USB 3.0. I tried it 3 different times with similar results. I have had other USB 3.0 drives that go close to 100 MB/s reads, so this one is way behind the pack.

Other Thoughts: For its price, it is a great drive to have to hold your music/movies you want to take with you on trips. I am a bit upset about the usable space being only 58GB and the write speeds being slower than most other USB 3.0 drives I have dealt with. I am giving this 4 stars as it is not perfect, but close to it.

5 out of 5 eggsNice little thumbdrive

This review is from: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 USB 3.0 64 GB, Capless Design, Read 130 MBs, Plug and Play (CMFSL3X1-64GB)

Pros: This is a very nice little thumbdrive from Corsair. There are several nice features that I like.

First, the construction feels very sturdy. The sliding cover feels very durable and clicks open and shut with a convincing snap. The open end of the cover raises a small concern if you expect that this drive will be stored or transported in a way that might lead to dirt/debris getting into the connector, but otherwise it feels sturdy yet easy to open and shut.
Next, the little drive activity light is a nice extra touch. The light is blue but not annoyingly bright like some unshielded blue LED lights. It is just the right brightness, easy enough to see in direct light but not blinding in a dark room.
Finally, the performance was consistently fast even if I didn't get anywhere close to the specified "up to 160 MB/s" speeds. Here are the speeds I recorded on 2 separate machines, transferring a large file under windows 7:

USB 2.0
Read - 35 MB/s
Write - 15 MB/s
USB 3.0
Read - 83 MB/s
Write - 20 MB/s

Small files transferred somewhat quicker with initial read speeds showing up at over 100MB/s and write speed starting out around 45 MB/s, but with longer file transfers the speeds settled down to the numbers I listed above.

Cons: The only drawback I found with this USB flash drive is that when the cover is opened and the drive is plugged into the computer, the part of the cover that is used to pull the drive back out of the socket to remove it is made of slick plastic. This, plus the drive being new and therefore having a somewhat tight fit into the USB socket, made removing the drive a bit difficult since my fingers kept slipping off the drive. I simply found it hard to get a good grip on it and couldn't pull it straight out. I had to grip it as tight as I could and wiggle it a bit. If the sliding part of the drive cover had a matte or textured finish instead of the slick shiny finish, it would have been a lot easier to remove. As far as cons go, this is a very small one unless you expect to have to reach behind the computer to repeatedly plug in and unplug this drive using a USB port on the rear of the computer. It was only a problem when I was using a rear port surrounded by other cables that made it hard to get a good grip on it.

Other Thoughts: It's a small thing and not really a pro or con for the drive itself, but I was pleased to see that the packaging of the flash drive did not require scissors or any unusual measures to open. I was able to get the package open with my fingers without any frustration, a nice change after fighting tamper-resistant packaging common with other brands and devices.

Overall this drive seems to be pretty high quality. The durable-feeling construction, the nice and not too bright activity light, and USB 3.0 speeds make it a very attractive drive. The slight negative of the shiny/slick cover making it a bit hard to grip for removal is only an issue if you're going to be unplugging this repeatedly from a cramped rear USB port. I recommend this drive to anyone who needs a nice durable USB 3.0 flash drive.
