2 out of 5 eggsThey've cheapened these.

This review is from: Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFSS3B-256GB)

Pros: Still made out of metal.

Cons: I've noticed the model number is now CMFSS3B as opposed to the former CMFSS3 (no B at the end). I'm thinking this was a change to the worse.

- (This drive) Crystal Disk Mark read: 41MB/s Write speed: 20MB/s
- (Former 128GB before the "B" was added) Crystal Disk Mark read: 142MB/s Write speed: 37MB/s (the drive is encrypted).

Overall the drive itself is lighter and slightly shorter. It feels more flimsy.

Other Thoughts: I tried FAT32 and NTFS and tested the flash drive multiple times. As far as the read/write speeds, maybe this one is just defective.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy this

This review is from: Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFSS3B-256GB)

Pros: Well built and rugged should last a while.

Cons: I'm an owner or 2 64gb versions of this flash drive and both of they are great. However, at some point over the last year since I ordered my previous one it seems they have changed either the kind of flash memory they use or the controller cause this drive is extremely slow. My other drives peak at about 54 MB/s write in atto and 187 MB/s reads. This drive however peaks at 20 MB/s writes and 45 MB/s reads. I've tested this on several computers using different formats, all with the same results. I contacted corsair about this, asked them if this was the expected rates. They simply told me to replace it which I did. The replacement is performing the same way so I'm going to return it for a refund. Stay away from these drives.

Other Thoughts: These drives use to be awesome but the speeds on this drive no longer even justify the the price of this drive over the cost of other drives on the market this size. I'd have to guess they started using cheaper memory or controller and hoped no one would notice, I RMAed my drive on corsair's suggestion and it made no difference. I would highly suggest investing your money in a different flash drive after this, unless corsair fixes this issue.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Flash Drive

This review is from: Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFSS3B-256GB)

Pros: Well protected USB flash drive. Only giving it a 4/5 stars because the speed is slower that other 3.0 flash drives I use. Fair price for this size drive, you can pay a lot more and get a lot less.

Cons: Speed tends to be slower than other 3.0 USB flash drives.

5 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for here

This review is from: Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFSS3B-256GB)

Pros: I was so tired of walking by my workstation and hitting the thumb drive sticking up, and bending the metal ever so slightly. What good is it to buy something that's fast, and a good price, if it breaks easily?

Cons: It's not as strong as the silver, black, and blue Survivor USB 3.0 model they once made. But it's still a very strong drive.

Other Thoughts: I ran my car over one of these one time and has no issues.

4 out of 5 eggsMy Latest "Survivor"

This review is from: Corsair Flash Survivor Stealth 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFSS3B-256GB)

Pros: This is my sixth Corsair Survivor series flash drive, starting at 4GB and leading up to 256GB now. None of them have failed me yet, and I've yet to even lose a rubber washer off any of them. I bought this one because my last two USB3 64GB Survivors were filling up and my GTR 32GB was starting to show signs of wear and age (spotty detection, slow transfers, etc) after ~4 years.

Thus far my impressions of this one is that 1) it's much lighter than any previous incarnation of Survivors I've had, including the GTR, which is about 50% longer than this one and weighs 3x as much. 2) It runs much cooler than its predecessors, which got noticeably warm after even moderate short-term use. And 3) it's about a centimeter shorter than my 64GB Survivor 3s, yet packs 4x as much.

Cons: The main 'con' I can find is actually one of the 'pros.' There are two versions of this drive - the CMFSS3, and the CMFSS3B. The main difference I could find between them is the non-'B' model is slightly larger and weighs more, which makes me wonder if the 'B' model was made more cheaply.

The lesser 'con' is sort of a difference from my last Survivors, which never needed 'coaxing' to close. With this model, it's not enough to simply screw the cover back on, you have to put a bit of force into it to have the threads mesh, so be wary if you're coming from past Survivor drives, as this one doesn't close as easily.

Other Thoughts: As I said before, I've not had a Survivor drive fail me yet, and with the care with which I treat them, I doubt I ever will. They might not be the fastest, but I can wait an extra few seconds for the knowledge that what I'm putting on it will be safe and secure (at least structurally).
