This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Good price. Got on sale with the Kit.
decent capacity for OS and programs.

Cons: Not that fast. Coming from a Entry level older 64GB Sata 6Gb/s ssd i thought there would be a noticeable difference in read/write performance as the Specs are significantly better fro the Kingston HyperX 3K. Not the case. For one Windows 8 pro loads about 1 or 2 seconds slower than the Cheaper, smaller Sandisk.

Other Thoughts: Also this uses MLC...why would a value 120GB drive use MLC flash and not SLC. things are just less responsive i find. ... I did not know about that I just saw it for $70 and got it. I did have higher hopes for this SSD...not too high but even in reviews it is compared with a Intel 520 which IMO is one of Intel's best.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the issue experienced with the HyperX 3K SSD. We can troubleshoot with you to determine if the drive is performing properly or not. A few things to check that can affect the performance of the drive would be the system's SATA configuration is set to AHCI, try the Standard or MSFT AHCI controller driver and if cloned from a different sized drive check the drive alignment. We can work with you on all of these steps. For assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

3 out of 5 eggsOkay for a while, then dead

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Price per Gigabyte and the gadgets that come with it.

Cons: Since day one, this drive was glitchy. It was fast, but Windows 7 and Windows 8 would freeze up or blue screen every so often, probably at least once per night. After nine months, it was no longer recognizable in any computer I tested with. Switched to an Intel SSD and haven't had a single issue.

I'm currently in the RMA process with Kingston so I'm curious how this will turn out. I'm not certain that I would buy from them again.

Other Thoughts: With how cheap it was, I can't be too disappointed. However, always remember, you get what you pay for.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsSSD

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Once i figured out the issue i was having with the ssd randomly freezing the whole system (details in cons) i was very pleased with the proformance boost it provided. Extremely fast boot times. Holds my win 7 os, and a couple of the games i play on reg. and most other stuff goes on mech hard drive i have running with it. Very happy with overal addition to system.

Cons: There is almost no support found on the net for the freezing issue i was having. I am very handy with problem solving stuff and finding a web solution but for the lfie of me could not. Come to find out i needed to change my sata port controlers over to AHCI and not run in ide. It is important that you make the needed changes in your registry aswell other wise you will have boot issues when you make the change to AHCI.

5 out of 5 eggsIts Solid State...Need Say More

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Came with the desktop adapter for easy mounting in any scenario.

Being a good quality solid state drive, its zippy, multitasking is a beast in a proper machine, though speeds any computer up, also does wonders on laptops considering their hdd restraints.

Cons: They don't give them away for free..

Other Thoughts: Great solid state, best bang for your buck for you mid to high range builders.

2 out of 5 eggsFail

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: It was really, really fast on boot-up.and on executing programs; it met my expectations for three days..

Cons: Once installed, I couldn't see the beautifully crafted case. Oh, and it died. and I've been unable to revive it.

Other Thoughts: Read all the reviews you can find for this item, first! This, my second SSD purchase. I wanted Samsung 840 EVO but I 'saved' 10 dollars buying this HyperX 120 for 10 bucks less (from a different vendor.) It looks nice on my desk, I'll keep it as a paperweight or give it to my X son-in-law but, I won't waste any more time on it. 840 EVO, currently in the mail from Newegg and I may order another before the end of the day.

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Nice and fast. Migration from mechanical drive was straightforward.

Cons: Could only afford two.

Other Thoughts: I previously purchased a 240 gig version of this drive for use in my desktop. One of these is in my laptop, the other in my HTPC.

5 out of 5 eggsHyperX 3K

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: I have had this drive for over 9 months now and it has proven to be very reliable, the read, and write speeds were as advertised, nothing but good on this drive!

Cons: There is no cons on this SSD, totally works great!

Other Thoughts: I just wanted to say that this drive has been very reliable and has given me no trouble at all, even at 9 or 10 months i have had this drive and speed were between 550/500Mbs and I just checked it again whit HD-Tune and has reported everything nominal.

4 out of 5 eggsFast SSD, but not as fast as a Samsung 840 Pro.

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: - Fast Speeds Overall, 420 MB/s Read and 243 MB/s Write.
- Doesn't Produce Sound
- Comes with a convenient 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, which I used, pretty sturdy build.

Cons: - Screws were a bit hard to screw in, it gives you a feeling you will break them.
- Small Capacity, I wish SSDs had capacities like Hard Drives.
- The 2.5" to 3.5" adapter didn't have all holes like a 3.5" Hard Drive

Other Thoughts: I think this SSD was worth it, and I also like how you don't need to bother with TRIM since it has a SandForce controller.
