5 out of 5 eggsGreat Reliable Drive.

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: This drive has performed very well in the two years I've had it. Yes it has slowed down some in performance, but not noticeable if you're not timing it with benchmarks. Haven't had a problem.

Cons: I really can't think of any.

Other Thoughts: I am going to go ahead and get another of these to run in a RAID, since the thing works just fine.

5 out of 5 eggsFast and Affordable

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Reliable and Fast

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I put this in my wife's laptop about a year ago. She didn't need one this fast, but Kingston had the best prices at that time. It has worked as expected for her without issue.

This is a great choice. But honestly, if you're just putting this in a run of the mill laptop for web browsing and mundane tasks like that, you really don't need one this fast. For a typical user, a fast drive like this is fine, but if you find another ssd from a good manufacturer that is cheaper, just get that. In a daily use scenario, you won't notice any difference between a 500 mb/s Kingston drive and a 250 mb/s Adata drive for example. Power users and enthusiasts need that kind of speed. Most other people should just shop for the best deal. Crucial, Adata, Kingston, Mushkin, Sandisk, Corsair, all make fine drives. I would just buy whichever has the best price in the size you need.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: It hasn't died yet

Cons: Took about 2 hours to put into its harddrive bay

Other Thoughts: The SSD when I got it was a hit an miss kind of deal with random failures which supposedly have been reduced now, but so far this SSD has been performing approximately the same and hasn't died on me yet, though I only use it for my OS and accidentally installing games every so often on it.

5 out of 5 eggsLong-term review: still excellent performance

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Windows boots in 6 seconds after bios flash.
Seq and random reads/writes are pretty fast.
Competitively priced for high performance part.
3K P/E cycles: estimated 290TB TBW (total bytes written over product lifespan) vs 64TB TBW of the 120GB V300. (Estimates provided by Kingston's website.)
120GB vs 128GB: 8GB of NAND cells are reserved for improving write performance (across individual NAND chips) and maintenance. 128GB SSDs typically have only a few left-over bytes reserved, so their firmware relies heavily upon free drive space; performance degrades over time and is inversely proportional to space used by files.

Cons: Purely from specifications:
MLC (multi-layer cell) -- typically considered slower read/erase performance than SLC and fewer P/E cycles.

Other Thoughts: I have had this drive for 14 months, and I have experienced minimal slowing. Here are some CrystalDiskMark benchmarks from a 1 month old W7 install and now (13 months later).

11/2013 read, write MB/s (39% 44/112GB used):
- seq: 310.0, 174.7
- 512K: 299.3, 169.2
- 4K: 25.10, 75.86
- 4k (QD32): 25.95, 109.9

12/2014 read, write; %changes (58% 64/112GB used):
- seq: 294.0, 183.1 (-5.2%, +4.8%)
- 512K: 275.9, 183.1 (-7.8%, +8.2%)
- 4K: 20.16, 70.73 (-19.7%, -6.8%)
- 4K (QD32): 26.13, 99.19 (+0.7%, -9.7%)

Those changes might be due to sampling error (CrystalDiskMark takes 5 samples; n=30 necessary for scientific/statistical significance). I have noticed ~5% decrease in performance overall, which could easily be W7 aging, so I am somewhat skeptical of those data. Below is some abbreviated SMART data. Draw your own conclusion.

SMART READ DATA (firmware revision 506ABBF0)
Revision: 10
5: (SSD Retired Block Count) Spare blocks remaining 100% Retired Block 0
9: (SSD Power-On Hours) Value 93 Total 6933 hrs 52 mins
12: (SSD Power Cycle Count) Power Cycle Life Remaining 100% Number of power cycles 352
171: (SSD Program Fail Count) Program Error Count 0
172: (SSD Erase Fail Count) Erase Error Count 0
174: (SSD Unexpected power loss count) Unexpected power loss Count 136
177: (Wear Range Delta) Wear Range Delta 6%
241: (SSD Lifetime writes from host) lifetime writes 3430
242: (SSD Lifetime reads from host) lifetime reads 1395

I will update with CrystalDiskMark values after I update the firmware to revision 526ABBF0.

WEI scores from HDD (before) and SSD (after) 10/2013:
Primary disk: 5.9 -> 7.7
It is perhaps worth noting that I slightly changed the RAM clock profile to be slightly more optimal, taking its WEI score from 7.5 to 7.6 (8GB Patriot Viper 3 1866).

For perspective, here are the CrystalDiskMark values for my 1TB Barracuda:

11/2013 read, write MB/s (58% 544/932GB used):
- seq: 108.0, 106.5
- 512K: 38.53, 58.48
- 4K: 0.488, 0.528
- 4k (QD32): 0.663, 0.587

12/2014 read, write; %changes (58% 64/112GB used):
- seq: 80.74, 13.09 (-25.2%, -87.7%)
- 512K: 40.0, 12.37 (+3.8%, -78.8%)
- 4K: 0.647, 0.535 (+32.6%, +1.3%)
- 4K (QD32): 0.716, 0.611 (+8.0%, +4.1%)

As you can clearly see, SSDs rule. I will never again buy a laptop or build a PC without an SSD.

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Fast,Fast,Fast!! I own two of these drives and they are as solid as they are fast.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: if you want a 120gb ssd still this is a great candidate . I have installed over the last year at least 20 of these in different computers and laptops . every one being just as stable as the last

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Fast, great drive for windows and maybe larger game (bf4).

Cons: died after 2 year 11 months. It was a slow death with driver stating not to loading ... other weird thing also started to happening...Bios motherboard flash was the killer...

Other Thoughts: Glad it came with a 3 year warranty. RMA was very easy, very fast. I'm in L.A. so my turn over time was 4 days!! Kingston very easy to deal with.

2 out of 5 eggsBlue Screen, Memory Dump, Crashes

This review is from: Kingston HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Much faster than HDD

Cons: After few months, started getting a blue screen, memory dump or something. Didn't occur so frequently until the 2nd year of use. Now I get this blue screen almost every day: on good days (perhaps once a week)--none; on some days multiple times just 10 - 30 minutes after startup. The system would force a system check like every day or two due to all this blue screen crash, and it would report nothing is wrong. After reading other reviews, I really think the problem lies with the SSD as I still get the blue screen after a fresh install of Win 7.

Other Thoughts: Would be willing to try a replacement drive if the process is simple. If not, I will not pick one from Kingston this time. Other reviews have convinced me on this aspect.
