2 out of 5 eggssolid drive

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Was fast when I put it in my system. Price was good when I bought it.

Cons: One day my system started to take 5-10 minutes to completely boot and shortly after just stopped. Right outside the 3 year warranty so not much I can do. Great while it lasted though.

Other Thoughts: Will be going with another brand for my next SSD.

Pros: Plenty of room, nice and clean build do to all the wires are hidden in the back space with the power supply. Stays real cool. All in all, really nice case.

Cons: Had to replace some of the fans as they started to sound like they were going to take off.

2 out of 5 eggsCertainly fast.

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: This SSD was an objective upgrade to any standard HDD I'd ever owned! Loading screens would just shoot by, and the operating system flowed like a dream.

Cons: No longer detectable after 3 months. It's been a pretty high-quality paperweight since then.

Other Thoughts: That's the expected trade-off with a speedy piece of tech like an SSD. It burns out exceptionally quickly.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Leonard,
We apologize for what's happened with the HyperX 3K SSD you received. It's not an expected trade off for the speedy SSD to burn out. In fact, it's expected to last longer than it would be relevant. Good news here is we warranty the drive for three years from the date of purchase and can replace the drive for you. So we can resolve this for you ASAP, please refer to case SR260425 and contact us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT or online: http://www.kingston.com/company/contacts#tech

Thank you for choosing HyperX SSDs!

5 out of 5 eggsAWESOME DRIVE

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Works great ,Looks great no issues over the last two years .l use for OS booting and main programs ,i've learned over the years to use a separate boot drive easier to redo and saved docs etc on a separate HDD (never lose stuff again) .it boots fast runs faster than ever .USED to have two raptors in raid this is faster & really have not found need for drives anymore.

Cons: SATA connection is weak watch how much stress on the cable connection and location of the drive 90 angle sata are great for this reason !!

Other Thoughts: THIS drive came with a 3.5" mounting plate and everything needed AWESOME not to mention it looks great !! works just the same too :)

4 out of 5 eggs16 months of use so far

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Faster read speeds than a HDD - about 3.5x faster
Good enough size for an OS and frequently used programs
It's lasted 16 months so far

Cons: Read speeds are OK, but the write speeds are poor - not only in comparison to other equivalently priced SSD's - but it's only marginally better than my HDD's
There are better options in this price range than when I bought mine

Other Thoughts: I bought mine on Black Friday 2013 for $99 CAD, same as the sale price as of this review. I use my computer a lot, as in many hours of daily use. 365 24\7. The disk shows 8572 power on hours.

I have my OS (Win 7), and my most used programs on it, including editing software which I use a lot. I've never defaragged it as is standard advice for an SSD, but I have reformatted it twice and re-installed Win 7 a half dozen times.

My current sequential read speed is 442 MB/s, which is OK. But the write speed is only 182 MB/s. (Measured with AS SSD and Crystal Disk) Compare that to my WD Black HDD that still has seq write speeds around 145 - 150 MB\s after many years of use.

This was my first SSD, so I noticed the increased access speeds right away. With the read speeds about 3.5x faster than my Black HDD, windows and all programs load and run faster. But it's those underwhelming write speeds. So when the disk is accessed to write, the speeds are only marginally better than an HDD.

It's been just OK for a first SSD, but in the long term it's underwhelming. There are much better options out there now in this price range.

4 out of 5 eggsGood at the time

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Feels heavy duty.
I thought it was a good deal at the time I bought it.
Great read speeds.
Came with this nice little tray that converts the drive into a smaller form factor to fit 3.5 inch drive bays.
I'm actually still using the tray for the drive that replaced it. Very handy.

Cons: Much better options out there now for cheaper.
The software is kind of clunky. Told me the firmware was the most recent, come to find out on some outside research that it is not. Did not want to update firmware when drive was installed to be a boot drive.
Heavy may also be a con.
Write speeds are junk.
Because I did not want to update the firmware, it struggled to come in and out of sleep. Known issue. I just dealt with it rather than risk my boot drive in a firmware update. Wish the software would have just told me about the update in the first place.
120 GB.
Lower price now than when I bought it 8/5/2014. But thats to be expected in tech.

Other Thoughts: I just decommissioned the Kingston in favor of a Samsung 850 Evo because the 850 was a shell shocker at 60 bucks! Couldn't say no. Even though this Kingston was pretty snappy (it was my first SSD) it doesn't compare to the 850.

120 GB may seem small, but I got Win 7 Pro 64 bit, Chrome, Avast, drivers, and a bunch of other stuff on here and thats with over provisioning it down to 90GB, formats down to ~111 GB. I read its best practice as most SSDs will slow and wear faster if they get full.

When I first made the switch from a HDD to a SSD, I defragged it like 3 or 4 times with Deffragler and moved everything I could off of the HDD. I then copied the disk with AOMEI (both freeware). Worked perfectly, twice now. Just did it from the Kingston to the Samsung too, minus the defragging.

I did really appreciate the tray it came with as I have bought several other SSDs after this Kingston and none of them came with it.

2 out of 5 eggsNot bad... while it lasted.

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: I had 2 of these, they both lasted more than 1 year, they worked well while they worked.
On an old system with little RAM they helped a lot.

Cons: One lasted a little more than one year, the other lasted a little less than 2 years.
They both died messy deaths, with days of confusing error messages and overall system instability.
Wasted time trying to figure out what's wrong and with reinstalling software. Lost some data too.
On a very fast system (i7 cpu and 16 GB of RAM) there was little (if any) gain in perceived performance over a fast HDD.

Other Thoughts: Went back to 15,000 rpm HDDs. Never been happier.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for 2.5 years. Failed afterwards.

This review is from: HyperX 3K SH103S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-Alone Drive)

Pros: Super fast. Great specs. Best specs for the price.

Cons: Failed before 3-year warranty expired. Worked like a charm for 2.5 years and failed suddenly. Neither BIOS or OS can see it.

Other Thoughts: Submitting claim to get it replaced with Kingston.
