1 out of 5 eggsDead on arrival - RMA approved

Pros: It looks nice.

Cons: After spending $300 for a piece of plastic that is not recognized by Windows 8.1 on two systems, I got a RMA number. I hate going to the mail room.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We're sorry for the problem experienced with the DTHX30 flash drive. We do perform 100% testing on all our products as detailed here: http://www.kingston.com/us/company/testing . As nothing is perfect, it is still possible, although rare, for one of our products to be DOA or become defective. We are here to help and the drive is warrantied for five years. Please feel free to contact us if there is any further issue with your replacement. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for Moving Big Files, Probably Not Small Files

Pros: Fast For Big Files
---------------------
(all tests w/ window 7 recreated volume and NTFS 64k cluster size)
AS SSD Benchmark
Seq Reads: 124 MB/s
Seq Writes: 85 MB/s
ISO Copy: 52 MB/s

Real-world 16GB Truecrypt Volume copy from SSD: 68.3 MB/s

High Capacity
-----------------
Big enough to hold multiple historical versions of most of my working data. The small form factor makes physically transporting and storing my backups easy.

Low Power
--------------
Unlike many large and fast external hard drives, doesn't have any problems with using more power than a USB port can provide.

Cons: - thicker than most other thumb drives I have

Slow for Small Files
=============
AS SSD Program Copy: sloooow, didn't finish

The AS SSD 4k write test yields atrociously slow results (0.07 MB/s), it was so slow that it never even got to the read test. I'm not sure what that is going to mean for real-world use, given that I'm mainly using it to copy large files.

Other Thoughts: I used Acronis Disk Director to recreate the volume because it apparently aligns them to 4k boundaries. This didn't impact the 4k write test results and slowed the sequential reads and writes somewhat. Recreating the volume using windows 7 diskmgmt.msc returned the sequential reads and writes to 123 and 84 MB/s respectively

This drive is factory formatted to Fat32, probably for compatibility, but limits file size to 4 GB. This seems like an file system odd choice for a high speed, high capacity drive.
