2 out of 5 eggsNot All Metal. Too Large

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: Seems durable. Hasn't Failed.

Cons: I couldn't find a single review to clarify what I am about to tell you, so I hope this helps. The thing is large and bulky compared to all other flash drives. When the usb connector is retracted, the device is about three inches long. It's also near a half inch think. Really, there is no need for that amount of bulk in a flash drive these days.

What is more aggravating, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that it isn't all metal. The middle of it, where it slides open and closed, is plastic. What is the point of a "durable metal" flash drive, if the exposed middle section is PLASTIC?!

I would buy something else if I had a do over.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: • Solid design
• Unobtrusive, but visible, status LED
• As described
• The weight of it conveys reliability
• So far, is reliable

Cons: • Some people may not like the design (I.E. weight, dimensions, or open end)
• No others at the moment...

Other Thoughts: Package arrived exactly as described and before predicted. Beautiful and resiliant, this flash drive met all of my physical expectations. It is big, but I knew that. Not a problem. Unobtrusive, but visible, status LED. Arrived completely functional unlike some reviews. Below are test results.

Tests done on the following system:
MS Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Intel Core i3-2370 CPU @ 2.40GHz, 8.0GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics Family

Two tests each:
Multitude of Small Files:
Average write rate with 5G of (Average 800KB) files: 7.5MB/s
Around 11 Minutes...
Average copy rate with 5GB of (Average 800KB) files: 15.1MB/s
Around 5 minutes...

Single Large File:
Average write rate with 1G file: 50MB/s
Around 20 Seconds...
Average copy rate with 1G file: 550MB/s
Virtually instantaneous.

I intend to use this device as a portable CentOS boot. Looking forward to good things.

2 out of 5 eggsUpset Kingston Fan

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: This flash drive has an awesome outer casing that is perfect for putting on a key chain

Cons: I had this drive for just under a week and it died on me. It showed no space on it. My PC (and a few other PC's with a wide range of OS's) would recognized it but if you tried to click on it, it would ask you to insert the drive.

Other Thoughts: I am a fan of Kingston flash drives and I have several drives. I wouldn't not recommend this drive. I would just chalk this dead one up to 1 out of 1000 just being duds and if you buy enough of a product you will eventually get a broken one.

I will probably replace this with another Kingston drive but not this one just incase there is a problem with this model.

5 out of 5 eggsBIG thumb drive

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: I've used plenty of thumb drives but this one is sooo sweet!
The storage is only one part of the equation, it's silky smooth, both getting data in and pulling data out have not seen any errors and it is hard to forget when its so big and ha a bright blue LED on it, one could;d almost say its IT bling.

Cons: The size is a bit much but you get use to it and at times come to appreciate it when in a hurry and almost forget to remove it from a USB port..

Other Thoughts: While there are many other choices for the 32Gig size range Kingston has a known record for reliability.

4 out of 5 eggsVery fast, very large

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: Very fast drive. No cap to lose. Lanyard loop to put it on a keychain. Works very well on an Xbox 360 however it is too wide to fit into the ports on the back. Have to plug it into the front.

Cons: Very wide - should fit into many USB ports without an issue, but if you have a lot of USB ports crammed together it might not fit.

4 out of 5 eggsSpeedy sucker

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: I have tested several USB 3.0 drives over the last several weeks and this is one of the fastest drives for the money. I had tested Team, Patriot, and Silicon Power flash drives along with the poor excuse for a USB 3.0 flash drive, the entry level Kingston (100 G3) which is barely faster than a Kingston USB 2.0 drive.

The case is very, very solid. I was tempted for a moment to run over it with my car to test it, but figured any damage might not be covered under warranty.

Activity light is very visible without being overly bright.

The sliding outside case mechanism is a plus in my view. I don't like caps because they are easy to lose, and internal sliding mechanisms with a button seem to break or get loose after a period of time, which means you have to hold the button down to insert the flash drive.

The key ring is solid metal, so I will be surprised if it breaks.

Finally, the metal case is very resistant to fingerprints, smudges, etc. Some of you may wonder why this is worth mentioning, but my fellow polishers will understand....

Cons: The plastic inside case is a white color which may get dirty in time. It would have been better if the white was a gray color for example.

A big large and heavy at 1.2 oz, but that has not been a problem so far.

If you use this in tight quarters or on a notebook, you might have an issue due to its size. I did try it on several notebooks and netbooks in the office without an issue.

If you have two USB ports very close together, you may not be able to get 2 USB flash drives in. If the two ports are 9mm or further apart (side to side), you have a very good chance of being able to use both ports.

Other Thoughts: It would be very helpful if Newegg was consistent in listing features of like products. For example, you will notice that on some USB flash drives, any mention of speed is omitted, so it is much harder to compare apples to apples.

I think Newegg is big enough to tell vendors here is the questions we want answers to before we list your product.

4 out of 5 eggsSpeedy but bulky

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 3 (G3) 32GB Flash Drive Model DTU30G3/32GB

Pros: Good speed, not a bad price. I reformatted with HFS+, and turned off journaling. A USB flash drive doesn't need journaling, it's sneakernet. In my testing, I got around 55MB/sec write, around 165MB/sec read, very respectable.

Cons: The device is very bulky and heavy for what it does. To get USB 3.0 working, I had to move my laptop protective cover out of the way, as it has to sit flush on the usb connection to use USB 3.0. It also shows up as 31.44MB rather than 32MB.

Other Thoughts: I found the PQI 32g USB 3.0 device to offer similar performance in a smaller and *much* lighter package.
