1 out of 5 eggsNot USB 3.0!!!

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: It's compact

Cons: It's not USB 3.0 and it's slower than any flash drive I've bought in the last 5 years.

Other Thoughts: Kingston has once again dropped the ball and lowered their standards with deceptive marketing practices, thus reducing themselves to "Keyword spammers" with their whole mumbo-jumbo about this drive being "USB 3.0 compliant"

Kingston's definition of "compliant" is that it FUNCTIONS in a USB 3.0 drive, but only at slow boring USB 2.0 speeds. Shame on you Kingston! I don't like to be taken for a fool and I will now make a conscious effort to avoid your products at all costs!

3 out of 5 eggsIt's slow.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: It has 8gb of space.

Cons: It runs slower than my USB 2.0 drive I've been using for years. I've tried it on 3 different computers, in the blue USB 3.0 ports. It consistently transfers at 8.0MB/s, which is extraordinarily slow. USB 2.0 can transfer 2-3x that fast. USB 3.0 should be able to transfer many more multiples of times faster.

What good is USB 3.0 if the device itself is SLOWER than 2.0?

Other Thoughts: For me, this drive is worthless. I already have a stack of USB thumb drives that are USB 2.0. The sole and only reason I bought this one was for increased speed, which I did not get.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for any issue experienced with the DT100G3 flash drive. This drive is an entry-level USB 3.0 drive and does not offer performance transfer speeds. If you are looking for a performance USB 3.0 drive, please consider our DTHX30 which offers 30MB/s write in USB 2.0 and 135MB/s write in USB 3.0 ports. For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

2 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: 1 piece design eliminating the possibility of loosing a cover, hardened plastic mold construction

Cons: Transfer rates very slow for a USB 3.0 device. Speeds compare to a USB 2.0 drive of equal value. Not worth the purchase. I have a few other USB 3.0 flash drives that well exceed the 100MB /sec. This doesn't even reach 7MB /sec

Other Thoughts: Surprising that Kingston would falsely advertise a "High Speed" product that is just a regular cheap flash drive with a blue port. New Egg should consider giving it away free with orders over $100

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Please understand the DT100G3 is an entry level drive that is USB 3.0 compliant and is not considered a performance drive. If you are looking for a USB 3.0 drive with high transfer rates as described please consider our DTHX30 which does offer 135MB/s write speed when in a USB 3.0 port. For any other assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow - why bother?

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: It has worked reliably.

Cons: Slow. In real-world usage it's slower than an older USB 2 Corsair Flash Voyager (in both USB 2 & 3 slots). And my similarly-priced USB 3 ADATA S102 speed-wise is much faster.

Other Thoughts: Why bother with this slow drive when other reliable, similarly-priced products are available?

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for any issue experienced with the DT100G3. Please understand this is an entry level USB 3.0 compliant drive, not a performance drive and does not offer high transfer speeds. If you are looking for a performance high transfer speed drive, please consider our DTR30 or DTHX which can be found here: www.newegg.com/Kingston-Technology-Corp/BrandStore/ID-1183 . For further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. 1 out of 5 eggsslower then a snail

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: cheap

Cons: This drive is seriously slow. I get less then 5 MB/s write speeds. I guess I should have known because there is no posted info on the speed of this drive. I just figured because it was a USB 3.0 drive it would be faster.

Other Thoughts: It is kind of misleading to call it a USB 3.0 drive. if they published the speeds I don't think anyone would buy it even for $7.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. We apologize for the confusion on the DT100G3. It is USB 3.0 compliant but is not considered a performance drive. As such, it would not offer high transfer speeds. If speed is a requirement, you may want to consider one of our performance drives such as the DTR30 or DTU30. Our other products can be found here: www.newegg.com/Kingston-Technology-Corp/BrandStore/ID-1183 . For any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. 1 out of 5 eggsCheap Junk

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: Cheap price.

Cons: Failed. Became a Read-only device with less than a month use, no read-write cycling, and only 25% capacity used. Shown as write-protected in Win7, DOS, Linux. Confirmed with Kingston this is symptom of bad flash controller. Junked! Not worth shipping cost to RMA it. Only USB thumb drive that has ever went bad on me in almost ten years.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Reliable Little Flash drive

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: Price on sale with free shipping was fantastic for a name brand USB 3.0 flash drive. Works great in a car system for playing music. USB 3.0 makes this very useful. Fast Upload speed.

Cons: Download speed to the flash drive is not fast, about what you would get from a normal USB 2.0 drive, which is around 5.1 MB/s. Since these are a bottom line name brand flash drive, this really isn't a con. Just don't expect it to be super fast just because it says it's USB 3.0. Upload speeds are where the USB 3.0 makes a difference at almost 70 MB/s in a USB 3.0 port.

Other Thoughts: Great for playing music and transferring files or pictures to other devices. If you want a faster download speed, you will need to pay more for a drive with faster memory, but for what you get, it's better than a no name brand.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat boot stick, slow write

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: - cheap, especially with recent promo: ca $1/GB
- great size for use as a boot device (virusscanner, unix install, etc.)
- surprisingly good read speed, given Kingston refuses to list it even on their web site: 80MB/sec using ext4 on Linux (and obviously USB3)

Cons: - abysmal write speed: < 4MB/sec.
- protective design a bit pointless: plastic slider leaves electric contacts open to dust. A simple cap would have been better!

Other Thoughts: If you're ok with the slow write speed (say, you only store few important files, or make it an OS boot stick where little is written), this is cheap, decent storage.

If you transfer files via sneakernet more often, you'd be better off with a faster stick (try to go for higher capacity as well, those are generally faster in writing data).

3 out of 5 eggsEntry-level flash drive

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 8GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model DT100G3/8GB

Pros: Decent read speed
No-lid design

Cons: Slow write speed
No activity light

Other Thoughts: Crystal Diskmark rates it at about 68 Mb/sec read and 5.6 Mb/sec write on USB 3.0, and 23 Mb/sec read and 5.5 Mb/sec write on USB 2.0.

So its write performance is slow, but it has decently fast read speeds. This suggests that it is better suited for data storage than dynamic cache or rapid transfer.

Construction seems large and sturdy, there's no activity light but the no-lid design means there is no cap to lose.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support. Please understand that the DT100G3 is an entry level drive, not a performance drive and would not offer performance transfer speeds. If speed is a requirement, one may want to consider our DTE30 or DTHX30 performance drives. Our other products can be found here: www.newegg.com/Kingston-Technology-Corp/BrandStore/ID-1183 .
