The Plextor M3 SATA 6Gb/s SSD series provides read/write speeds up to 525/445 MB/s in sequential mode and up to 70,000/65,000 IOPS in random mode. M3 SSDs uses the latest SATA 6Gb/s (SATA III) interface, Marvell’s server-grade controller, and Toshiba 24nm Toggle NAND flash. Also supported by the flash is a 1.8V power mode, providing the M3 with extremely low-power consumption making it a very eco-friendly product.

The M3 features exclusive firmware with True Speed, including Plextor’s proprietary Bad Block Management, Global Wear Leveling, and Instant Restore technologies that optimize performance. True Speed is designed to prevent drastic drops in read/write speeds that normally occur with SSDs after prolonged use or when data becomes heavily fragmented. True Speed technology will maintain the M3’ high performance and read/write speeds at like-new levels throughout the life of the drive.

Plextor strives to exceed industry standards with rigorous benchmark testing; before leaving the factory, each Plextor SSD is put through a 20-hour high temperature burn-in test and an intense simulation of real world environments. As a result, Plextor SSDs have a 0.59% average annual failure rate, which is one of the lowest in the industry. The M3 offers a perfect solution for businesses, power users, serious gamers, system integrators, and anyone who demands a drive with high efficiency and fast performance. The M3 is available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities.

Plextor's no-compromise customer policy includes a five-year ironclad warranty and the highest standards of customer support.

5 out of 5 eggsQuality 512GB SSD

Pros: 1. lower power consumption when compared to other 512GB SSD's
2. great performance including with incompressible data
3. excellent customer support

Cons: 1. price (no eggs deducted)

Plextor SSD's are more expensive but their performance is great. In particular, they excel at incompressible data. Most SandForce SSD's have a weakness where incompressible data slows them down. This and the other Plextor SSD's do not use SandForce controllers. They use Marvell controllers instead which can handle incompressible data much better as indicated in the benchmarks I have seen.

Other Thoughts: I have an HP DM1-3025DX Netbook. I previously had an Intel X25-M 160GB SSD in it. I then replaced it with an Intel 520 Series 240GB SSD. Now I have installed this Plextor 512GB SSD and it is great! The Intel 520 Series SSD was a little faster by maybe 30MB/s according to benchmarks. However it is not noticeable. I needed a higher capacity SSD than 240GB and also the Intel 520 Series is known to use a lot of power when compared to some other SSD's. The whole point of using an SSD in a netbook is to conserve power and extend battery life. While the Intel 520 Series has low power usage when idle, it does use significant power when in use. I knew the power utilization would go up in general since 512GB SSD's usually take more power than smaller ones but after researching, the Plexor M3 Series 512GB SSD seemed to have lower idle and in use power utilization when compared to Intel 520 Series. It is interesting that the specifications on Newegg show it as being 5 watts for active usage. However when I researched it, a lot of the benchmarks had the Plextor as using about 3 watts. This is not bad for a 512GB SSD. The Intel X25-M Series SSD had the lowest power utilization but that is because it is only SATA II. In case you are wondering, I too was surprised that my netbook supported SATA III as it is older but I can confirm it does for certain as the benchmarks have show it to have SATA III transfer rates. I could have bought the Plextor M5 Pro Series SSD but its power utilization was too high for my liking. I'm sure it performs better than the M3 Series but I wanted to maintain a lower power usage. I have used Plextor DVD products in the past and they were always top-of-the-line products so I am hoping their SSD's are great as well. So far, so good. The people I know who have Plextor SSD's are very happy with them. So in summary, if you are looking for a 512GB SSD that has a lower power consumption but still maintains performance, look no further than this one!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

Pros: Good price for all the SSD delights. My second SSD and so far not much difference in terms of performance, though it feels good to have a humane amount of space for once.

Cons: Cloning utility is on CD ONLY. I asked for a link to a download somewhere, but it seems it doesn't exist. For the increasing population of ultrabook owners, this means some extra legwork.

Other Thoughts: Plextor should ditch their cd drives while the getting is good!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

Pros: One of the lower priced SSD's fastest non sandforce drives with this much space. Fully saturates my older x58 sata 3 ports with upgraded firmware. Incredibly fast and seems like it will maintain the speed very well.

Cons: The included cloning software is simple and works well. But it doesn't align the ssd properly. So make sure to align your hard drive before you clone your drive, or else you will have to re-align it and trust me its a pain.

Other Thoughts: You have to use the intel ports on an x58 board to flash the ssd firmware. As the marvell port won't work. However, once you do update it, and you have the latest marvell firmware for your motherboard the speeds are phenomenal.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: if you're educated on ssds, then you'd know that plextor's best thing is long term performance, top speeds are attainable only on a fresh drive, in the real world, your drive is not fresh anymore after you install os on it

Cons: it's not the latest and greatest

Other Thoughts: this marvell controller is obsolete now, the new one is used in m5 pro, if you wanna spend more money for the latest and greatest, go ahead and get the m5 pro, if it's even in stock, but if you wanna be a little economical, m3 is the best

5 out of 5 eggsPlextor M3 512

Pros: super fast, great price for the quality and size.

Cons: Least random 4k IOPS of this line

Other Thoughts: Still really too soon to tell, but initial thoughts are very impressive. Didn't check/change the firmware. Just did fresh win 7 pro install with no issues. With 0 second post delay and no password to input, cold boot is ready to go in just under 13 seconds on a laptop with a 3610QM. After my wife's tech department got all of its crapware running, it still boots in under a minute and shuts down in just a few seconds, which is at least 1/3 for start up and at least 1/10th the time for shutdown. My wife doesn't give a hoot about computers, but even she said it was fast.

Will update review in due time.

5 out of 5 eggsGood buy

Pros: Easy to install in my desktop with 3.5in dongle. Includes free, simple back-up and cloning software. Write speeds are within 50-100 mbps of advertised after 1.04 firmware flash (simple process).

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Compared to my 7200 RPM WD cav blue this thing is a monster. Windows 7 boots super fast and R/W speeds are great. Price is steep but it's a new technology.

Win 7 Pro, asus p9x79 le, i7-3820 @ 3.6, 16gb kingston hyperx ddr3 ram, EVGA gtx660ti SC 3gb, 850w XFX psu, plextor 512 M3 SSD, 500GB WD cav Blue 2nd

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job well

Pros: This had no hiccups installing on my first generation X58 platform with an EVGA E760 MB which is SATA 2 only. I installed it on the Intel SATA0 port. I performed a fresh install of Windows 7 SP1. PC boots from initial Windows 7 splash screen to W7 in 20 seconds with Norton, Origin, Steam, Samsung printer software loading. Before, it took over two minutes to load W7 with a RAID 0 7200rpm HDD setup.

I ran the SSD Performance Analyzer several times for consistency that came with the Plextor PX-512M3 SSD and it gave me these MB/S numbers on SATA2 port

Average Write = 190 Max 230
Average Read = 219 Max 256

This falls in line with SATA2 speed perfectly which would not exceed max threshold 300 MB/S

By comparison, the same test showed on my Seagate 7200rpm 64mg cash HDD model ST2000DM001-9YN164 as follows

Average Write = 117 Max = 179
Average Read = 84 Max = 205

I definitely look at the average more than the max speeds. The number were nearly the same every time

Cons: Came with Firmware 1.01. Before installing anything on the SSD, I installed the latest 1.04 firmware. This procedure messed my HDD RAID 0 partition and I could no longer boot from it.

When updating the firmware for this SSD, I would unattached other SSD or HDD drives connected to the MB. Luckily for me, it did see the RAID 0 partition after doing a initial install of W7 on the SSD. So I didn't need to download all my Steam or Origin games again. Woot!

Other Thoughts: Games load way faster even when installed on the Seagate 7200 2TB RPM D: drive. Office 2010, Creative Media Organizer, Browsers install on the SSD C: drive pop up near to instantly. BF3 loads 5 times as fast which I installed on the SSD drive.

I am very happy with this SSD and highly recommend even if you have SATA2 only on your MB.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice indeed

Pros: Speed, while not up there with Sandforce was impressive. Capacity. No need to install any programs on a secondary mechanical drive. Compatability. Windows 7 recognized the drive and installed without a hitch.

Cons: Price. No reason to take away an egg. Quality costs.

Other Thoughts: Don't be put off by the few Mac users who reviewed this poorly. The issue was not the drive but their own lack of tech knowledge.
