1 out of 5 eggsFailed

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Worked flawlessly for about 19 months. Now, locks up.

Cons: Failed after 19 months. I am probably going to pursue a claim on the warranty and keep as a backup. Changing to another brand for my primary SSD.

4 out of 5 eggsIssue detecting in MBP

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Solid performance. Works well with MBP unibody.

Cons: None to date.

Other Thoughts: I can speak to the other user who had issues with drives being detected when installed in a MBP. We had the same issue at my College, but it turns out that the flex cables needed to be replaced. It was very odd, but we figured since the drive was readable from a sled that perhaps it was the cable in the MBP. Turns out we were right.

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The Plextool works well to diagnose download firmware updates, however does not install the firmware.

Cons: Writes about 3-7GB and then stops working.

Other Thoughts: Out of the box this drive was nothing but trouble. Would not hold an OS or anything. Tried different cables, tried formatting and updating the firmware. Btw the firmware update is done by a liveboot of linux. I eventually downloaded the utilities from plextor and found out that my drive was dead. Furthermore, the alerts in the tool and the manual is very poorly translated English. After the first laugh or two it gets quite annoying.

I'm going to see about getting a replacement. However seeing how the company said "The M5S SSD goes through the rigorous tests and is of the highest quality. Plextor’s exacting requirements for quality control mean that all SSDs must meet high standards and expectation." I don't believe I will give them more than 3 stars depending on how well it works when I get a replacement. Very disappointing so far.

5 out of 5 eggsFast, Fast, and Fast

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Blazing fast speeds -- POST took me longer than windows boot up even before I activated the RAID controller for my data drive. This drive runs blazingly fast.

Cons: Didn't fit a standard SSD mount I had floating around; don't know why the screws didn't line up, but it wasn't worth fighting with. I've applied zip ties to hold the drive in place instead -- it's light and vibration free, so it's not like I need it mounted that securely.

2 out of 5 eggsTerrible drives

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: When they work, they are really fast

Cons: Our company recently purchased 7 of these from insight to upgrade 7 people to SSDs on their Macbook Pros. The first laptop was successful without any issues. The second one, the SSD#2 was noting being detected in the disk utility. I put the drive on a sock and placed the original drive back in and was able to see SSD#2 on the hard drive dock. Formatted, and placed back in the main bay. Still does not detect. Installed SSD#3 and 4 and still the same problem. SSD#5 worked. I tested the rest and they were fine too. So 3 out of 7 were busted. That is extremely bad. Is there no quality control?

Other Thoughts: My coworkers said that plextor is the best, but i dont think i will ever purchase them again. 42% failure rate is not acceptable. I will seek out better alternatives.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent performance

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Excellent performance. Plextor i known for reliability.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: My last SSD in my old machine was a Samsung 830 128GB. I wanted to move to a larger drive for this machine, but couldn't quite afford the 840Pro 256, I didn't want anything with SandForce (including Intel), I didn't trust the TLC in the regular 840 and the write speed of the Crucial M4 seemed really slow even though the drive gets excellent reviews for being reliable.
There wasn't a lot of reviews out on the web for this particular drive, and I felt I was taking a little big of a gamble with it, but I'm ultimately pleased with it's performance.

I'm a developer and occasional Gamer, and I couldn't ask for a faster or more responsive drive. It boots my Arch Linux install to the KDM login screen in about 4 seconds once it passes the bootloader.

A high level overview of the rest of the machines specs are
i7 3770 (non-k) clocked to 4.1GHz by setting it to 4.1GHz Turbo for all 4 cores active.
16GB Kingston HyperX DDR3-1866 (although, I'm running at 1600 speeds so that it'll run at 1.5V).
EVGA GTX560Ti 2GB drive.
Samsung spinning drive for extra data storage.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT DRIVE

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Plextor M5S Series PX-256M5S 2.5" 256GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast. Windows 7 boots to the desktop before the startup animation is complete.

Cons: On the expensive side, but no more so than other SSDs.

Other Thoughts: Benchmark speeds on my system:
Sequential Read: 450 MBytes/sec
Sequential Write: 355 MBytes/sec
Random Seek + R/W: 260 MBytes/sec
