The Plextor M5M is a high-performance mSATA 6 Gb/s SSD specifically engineered to give ultra book, tablet PC, and other JEDEC MO-300 form factor users the speed and low power consumption benefits of the newest generation SSD technology.

  • - Latest server-grade Marvell® 88SS9187 controller ensures fast and reliable operation for all applications.
  • - Sequential mode performance of up to 540MB/s read and up to 160MB/s write, boosts the responsiveness of ultrathin laptop and tablet PCs.
  • - Random read speeds of up to 73K IOPS and write speeds up to 42K IOPS at 4K file size, give maximum real-world performance benefits.
  • - Advanced True Speed technology provides long-term sustained performance for all data types and prevents speed drop.

Plextor SSD has a unique True Protect protection system to protect the integrity of your data. To confirm that each piece of data is correctly stored with one hundred percent accuracy the newest 128-bit error correction code is used. For data confidentiality, the drive uses hardware in the US Government AES-validated Marvell controller to provide secure 256-bit full-drive encryption.

The combination of the latest Marvell® 88SS9187 6Gb/s SATA controller’s powerful 128 Random Bit/2K BCH ECC (Error-Correction Codes), and the exclusive Plextor firmware based Robust Data Hold-out Algorithm gives the M5M unequaled data integrity.

AES, the U.S. government standard encryption technology, is divided into three levels 128, 192, 256. The Plextor M5M uses the highest level of encryption - 256 bits. This level of SSD encryption is highly secure compared to BIOS or software based encryption and offers strong protection if the computer is stolen.

  • Supports the SATA Device Sleep standard incorporating the new DEVSLP state allowing the SSD to communicate in sleep mode.
  • With the DEVSLP mode, the M5M can reduce the power consumption to only 1 mW, and resumes from DEVSLP mode only in 100ms.
  • In order to meet the needs of consumers, the M5M delivers an effective operating and long battery life of the mobile device.

48hr Sustained Read and Write Test
Two days continuous 4K file read/write test, zero error pass requirement.
4000 Times Idle Test–Sleep and Hibernation Test

3 out of 5 eggsUPDATE

Pros: Customer service was pretty prompt

Cons: Per Plextor support: " Hi, our drives are not designed to be used with the drobo units. On the Drobo's its used as a caching device which will wear out the drive at a high exponential rate."

Other Thoughts: Now trying to find a msata drive that works as an accelerator in my Drobo... "officially"

2 out of 5 eggsDrobo accelerator

Pros: It was easy to install, arrived quickly and worked as expected for just over 2 years.

Cons: Drobo detected drive failure after 25 months of use.
Hoping Plextor Support can assist. I sort of expected more then 2 years of life from a premium brand.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable performance ideal for caching

Pros: Excellent read performance.

Anvil's Storage Utilities reported 512 MB/s sequential read speed, 7,800 random read IOPS at QD1, and 62,000 random IOPS at QD16. It's amazing that Plextor is able to coax this level of performance out of just 64 GB of NAND.

Plextor SSDs have a very good reliability track record and I expect the drive to last me many years.

Cons: Slow write performance, but that's to be expected.

There's only so much bandwidth available with 64 GB of NAND. Anvil's Storage Utilities reported 154 MB/s sequential write speed and 18,800 write IOPS at QD1. Users needing better performance should consider getting a higher-capacity drive instead.

Other Thoughts: First unit was DOA and promptly replaced by Newegg without any issues. Defective units do come up once in a while and I'm not deducting eggs given my very positive experience otherwise.

Second unit has been in use for nearly a year, originally for caching and now as a scratch space drive to offload writes from my main system SSD.

This is an ideal drive for SSD caching. By now, though, one should consider the newer and cheaper M6M instead.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the older z77 board

3 out of 5 eggsexpect RMA

Pros: Drobo 5n compatible. Simple plug and play

Cons: I bought 2 of these last year for my drobos. One last 8 months and was RMA'ed and the other has just now failed right a year. Decent performance when they work but I expect more durability from a name like Plextor. If your considering these then you probably wanna take the newegg extra warranty coverage. The will fail, however pletor does honor it's warranty its just RMA is a pain.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Got it on sale, came with screws, simple install, super fast.

Cons: -none-

Other Thoughts: I put the OS on this and kept my data on the HDD. Boot speeds were reduced dramatically. How did I live so long without it?

5 out of 5 eggsCame with the 2 screws

Pros: This SSD had 59.63GB available after partitioning and formatting NTFS. It scored a 8.1 on windows 8.0 wei. It replaced a OCZ agility 3 that scored a 7.1 on the same cloned operating system! My alienware 14 boots right from this msata drive (I had to remove the old SSD sata I cloned). bios is set to raid but no drives assigned to an array. The computer boots up in 3.5 seconds after post to login screen. The 2 screws needed to secure the drive to the msata slot were included!

Cons: Package is OEM, tiny clear plastic, not pretty. The screws in the bag were taped to the cover, I might have missed them.

Other Thoughts: For the price, I got a quality product but I was expecting a little more pretty things, like stickers or a pretty box. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsHP Elitebook Folio 9470m compatible with Intel Smart Response Technology

Pros: HP Elitebook Folio 9470m compatible with Intel Smart Response Technology, which was the main reason I bought it...

Cons: um... could be cheaper?

Other Thoughts: This was an easy install on the laptop. A phillips screwdriver is the only tool you need. Just remove the battery and there's two small, black phillips screws on the left. Remove those and then slide the cover off. You'll see the msata slot clearly labeled. Use the two small screws that came with the SSD to secure it to the motherboard. Reboot... Make sure you've got the system bios set to 'raid' more, not ahci or ide. After your operating system is up and running, install the latest Intel Rapid Storage drivers and you'll probably have to reboot at least once. After the reboot, open the Intel application and hit the performance tab. Enable the acceleration and choose your write mode... Easy! took me about 10 minutes to get this running. And, yes, it made a very noticeable difference. For example, Outlook took 18 seconds to start before, now it takes 3-5 seconds... Well worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsAdded to Windows 8.1 Dell XPS 8700

Pros: Increased system start up speed considerably. Easy to physically install and had a low cost. Reinstallation of Windows was not necessary. Includes the required screws so you don't have to order some special tiny ones (I WISH NEWEGG WOULD PUT THAT IN THE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION!!!!)

Cons: Hard to find directions on how to add to a Windows 8.1 system when you DON'T want to reinstall the OS. Actually, I couldn't find anybody who had added an mSata this way.

Other Thoughts: Installed on Dell XPS 8700 with all updates (including BIOS) installed beforehand. I changed the BIOS settings to RAID and then watched the computer fail 2 or 3 times at booting until the Safe Mode was offered.

Started the computer in Safe Mode with Networking and then started up the already installed Intel RST program. I used the Intel software to initiate the Partitioning then the Accelerating of the new mSata. At first, the Intel RST software seemed to fail (based on the error message it gave) but upon reboot, the system went into normal Windows (to my shock!) and at the end of the booting process, Intel RST started working its magic on the mSata drive.

It was a little scary as the white paper I had read from Dell did not offer much advice for people who DON'T want to reinstall their OS after installing an mSata. The Microsoft articles they suggested had you jumping through hoops to change hard drive drivers and whatnot and probably would have ended up in my having to start from scratch which I didn't have the time to do (it's a work computer).

A worthy investment in my opinion.

1 out of 5 eggsWent about 2 weeks before having an issue in my Drobo 5N

Pros: Seems quick but haven't benchmarked

Cons: Went into a failure mode in less than 2 weeks in my Drobo 5N

Other Thoughts: I bought this to accelerate my disk access on my Drobo 5N. It worked well for about 2 weeks (came with the 1.03 firmware) but then suddenly today the Drobo started complaining of failures. Drobo's Dashboard now reports it as "Warning (Life 100%)". I have no idea what that means and there is no documentation about that status. I've got a mSATA adapter coming so I can plus it into a desktop and check it out but this is going back to Newegg for replacement. Hoping this was a fluke and the replacement will be more stable.
