Very Tough, kind'a slow
This review is from: Silicon Power Touch 850 16GB Waterproof USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model SP016GBUF2850V1T
Pros: I got this one to test it. I will get more of these and the similar models. Gave it a good torturer test today: survived a glass of water for 20 minutes, being stamped on with my Dr Martens for 2 minutes, hurled onto cemented large stones (fireplace). Only one very minor nick, and NO scratches!! Still has smooth, quality slide action on the USB tongue, which holds in place even while trying to push it in very hard! Still passes MD5 hash check on copied to files. Very small, smaller than Patriot X-Mini. This is a plus on tight ports like laptops and small hubs. Gold contacts are of high quality. The thing is so low weight and high strength that no amount of falling will damage it. Maybe crushing with pliers? (will finally break it?) The USB tongue is completely sealed when retracted, as it appeared. Even the decorative lanyard is very strong. Holds up to HUGE keychains in pockets. I like that it comes in a couple of styles and colors, easy to tell apart. All the positive Eggs add up to 7 eggs ...
Cons: ... but there are a few down sides. First, it has NO LED!! And it is a little slow, not the worst: from 1 to 9 it's a 3 in speed. Crystal Disk mark gives it 22MB/s read and 11MB/s write on NTFS with 4K allocation block on 50MB test, and 11MB/s read and 4.4 MB/s write on 1GB test :( ... it came formatted with FAT32 (most Flashdrives are) and on this drive is nearly as fast as NTFS, but has 4GB limit on file size, so no full size DVD ISOs :( ... I recommend sticking with FAT32 if you can, the biggest downside was with NTFS and windows 7 x64 (same with x86??) was when reading from SSD or SATA III HDD the initial progress was at a (very wrong) 300 MB/s (umm, USB 2.0 is tops @ ~60 MB/s (480 mb/s)) for about 10-15 seconds then the last 1/3 of progress-bar was from 100 down to 14.4 MB/s then it hangs at 99.9% progress (the last reported 5 seconds) for the next 2-10 minutes!! Arg! It only does this for files starting at about 150MB (on up to 4.7GB ISOs) and NTFS format (of any allocation block size). There is no issue with FAT32 ... so minus 3 Eggs from the Pro eggs of 7 = total of 4 ...
Other Thoughts: ... well, it is still very good with smaller files! Copied 2.5GB of ~5MB mp3 to it in ~15 minutes. It does not get super slow with small files like some drives, but yes, it does slow down. This drive will be great for secure backup and project files, music collections, pictures and such. Not good for a large capacity 'sneaker-network' of quickly moving large files around. However, I'll bet it uses low enough power that you could run 4 of these in a mini-hub (RAID 0 with flashdrives?!?... :)
