3 out of 5 eggsKeep Looking

Pros: Fit in the case, no need for drivers for XP and above, easy installation. Fast shipping. Easy ordering

Cons: No black faceplate.
On my MSI 7151 motherboard, I get a USB Power Surge error from Windows XP's System tray that rendered the device inoperable. I suspect this is a problem unique to my motherboard. See "other thoughts" for details.

Other Thoughts: I could not get all card ports to work due to the USB controller power surge problem. My motherboard would report that the card reader required "Unknown" power versus 100mA or 500mA like my other USB devices reported. I set the device manager to ignore USB errors on the USB Controller in hopes of bypassing the problem, but this simply suppressed the error message and the reader still did not work.

However, I was able to get the card reader's USB port to work on it by connecting only the top half of the plug to my motherboards USB terminals. I saw mention that someone clipped a wire to get theirs to work fully. I wish I knew which one.

In sum, I think you can find a good reader that has both black and white faceplates out there. Keep looking.

2 out of 5 eggsLook elsewhere

Pros: Reads many different types of cards. Has USB port on front. Cheap.

Cons: Poor quality USB device. Causes motherboard to take forever to initialize USB during POST. Windows 'looses' the device often, so you have to uninstall it from the device manager and reinstall or reboot. Slots are not enclosed so cards can be lost inside the reader if inserted at an upward angle.

Other Thoughts: More frustration than it's worth.

4 out of 5 eggsNice cheap reader

Pros: Got the job done. Ubuntu recognized it immediately and presented me with half a dozen new "drives".

Cons: The lights are annoying.

Other Thoughts: This thing seems to collect really fine dust, hit it with some compressed air every couple months to keep things working right.

2 out of 5 eggsWould have been a bargain

Pros: You've seen one card reader you have seen them all. I didn't expect a Lexar or Sandisk with a high throughput.

Cons: Won't fit!! Whoever thought this one out (or DIDN'T as it were) should be fired. So the only 3.5 slot on the case is at the top. It's where it should be. Who use floppies any more?

The cable is too short to reach the motherboard. Nobody has extension cables for internal USB. I could solder and shrink tube, but why. It doesn't come with a 5.25 adapter. Okay, so I have an old one of those. BUT, it doesn't come with a 5.25 faceplate either (what? 10-cents item?)

Other Thoughts: Somethings just aren't worth messing with. RMA time.

2 out of 5 eggsDesign flaw

Pros: Able to read many type of flash memory. Easy to install.

Cons: The SD slot and USB are adjacent to one another. If you have a wide USB drive, you can't have a SDHC card inserted (say goodby to Vista ReadyBoost) when using your USB drive. What were they thinking? All they had to do is turn the USB 90 degrees. Shame on me for not seeing it.

Other Thoughts: Determine how you'll use your cards/devices before you buy.

1 out of 5 eggsWhen you insert a card, it uninstals itself

Pros: Price

Cons: When you insert a card (SD or CF in my case), it causes the device to get uninstalled. Wait a minute, insert the card again, it re-instals itself!

CF card slot will allow you to loose the card inside the reader if you angle the card upwards.

Other Thoughts: I tried it with 2k & XP (same box, different bootable drives) and the same thing. Inserting a card causes the device to get uninstalled. If you then wait a minute and insert the card again, the device gets reconized again.

Figure that out if you can!

3 out of 5 eggsOk I guess...

Pros: Reads just about any memory card on the planet! Has a front mounted USB port. Nice looking. Did not need the driver disk Vista recognized it right away.

Cons: Had to remove one wire form the plug to get it to work. Also it takes a loooong time for my MB to initialize the USB during it's POST, I thought about sending it back but I looked at the other card readers Newegg had and did not see many others the will real MicroSD with out the adapter.

Other Thoughts: It's an ok card reader for the price. Shows up as 5 removable drives?

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Fit's nicely in a floppy drive slot. Works great so far as I can tell. There are two led lights. One to tell you the computer has power to it. The other that tells you a card is present in the drive.

Cons: Can't find any yet.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great, but ...

Pros: The AICR-03-BG reads all common flash media cards, and some not so common one. The USB slot in the front is a thing of beauty. Easy install and it's a great looking card reader.

Cons: This card has two small indicator lights on the front panel, red & green. The red light on my reader is always illuminated. The green light illuminates when a card is inserted. The continuously illuminated red light is annoying, but it doesn't hamper proper operation. I like the reader, so I'm going to exchange it for another one. Hopefully, the problem is confined to only this reader and not the entire product line.

Other Thoughts: Motherboard: ASUS P4P800
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 / 2.6C GHz
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Memory: 2GB, 184 Pin DDR, PC-3200
