3 out of 5 eggsJust as fast as 2.0

Pros: The little bugger is made like a tank. When I opened the package, I was a little surprised at the feel. I guess I'm used to my old U3 drive. Cute little light.

Cons: I got 15m/s write 50-60m/s read on 2.0. I got the same write on 2.0 but the ready was like 70-90m/s. Not worth the 3.0 designation.

Other Thoughts: Most of the 3.0s I've seen, have been the same speed as 2.0s. You don't get much use of the 3.0 speed form an 8GB. You have top get 16GB+ before you see the 50mb/s+ write speed. Also, I can plug in a hard drive (a spinning disk drive) and it has a better read/write speed than my solid state USB stick???? where is a eSATA flash drive? And, lets take a look at USB 2.0, it has a throughput of 480mbps. Do the math, that's 60mbs. (mbps - megabits per second, mbs - megabytes per second, 8mbps = 1mbs). So any 3.0 drive that claims to have a speed <60mbs is kinda a waste. I understand it is a theoretical max and may not always be achieved, but I bought a 3.0 motherboard, and a 3.0 drive. I wanna see the pigs fly!!

4 out of 5 eggsBe sure to check speeds

Pros: Cheap - USB 3.0 - Solid build w/metal shield

Cons: Barely faster than USB 2.0

Other Thoughts: I get about 10 MB/s with a USB 2.0 flash drive. I bought this one excited about the hope of getting 54 MB/s. To my dismay, however, the page is correct when it says the write speed is only 15MB/s. Be sure to check the speed before you get excited about it being cheap.

5 out of 5 eggsBoom goes the dynamite.

Pros: - 8GB USB 3.0
- Link activity light
- It works

Cons: - No lanyard (but it does have holes for one, and I had an extra lying around)

Other Thoughts: I had a couple of 1GB flash drives lying around, but wanted something more substantial just in case. I doubt I'll ever need anywhere close to 8GB, but I had a gift card to use.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm.

Pros: Looks good. Feels high quality. It has a led to indicate activity.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It came with the fat32 filesystem. I switched it to ntfs so I could store more on it.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performance on Linux

Pros: Measured average raw read and write speeds using dd on Linux:
- USB SS raw reads average 53.4 MB/s; raw writes avg 17.3 MB/s (better than claimed :) with 128-KiB blocks
- USB HS raw reads average 32.5 MB/s; raw writes avg 17.3 MB/s with 128-KiB blocks
Using small block sizes (512 or 1024 B), raw write performance was much lower. presumably due to inefficient erase/re-writes of partial nand flash blocks. I didn't test any sizes between 1and 128 KiB, figuring that it was most likely large-page nand.

Formatted with xfs, 128-KiB stripe size: No loss in average sustained file read and write speed, as compared to raw.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Tested on HP EliteBook 8540w, running Fedora 14 32-bit, kernel 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686.PAE
SS tested on USB 3.0 port (xhci).
HS tested on USB 2.0 port (ehci).

I had no previous experience with this brand, so I was not sure what to expect. So far so good! :)

I wish manufacturers would be clear about the mapping of "external" (user-level) blocks to internal (flash) blocks, so that users might have an idea from the start what sorts of configurations could give optimal performance. Doesn't seem to be unique to this product though.
