4 out of 5 eggsCompact and inexpensive

Pros: Small enough to take along in a photo bag. Can be used in any system that supports USB. Cap encloses SD card and another on the USB side to keep the lint out. Reliable, had a dozen and all worked fine.

Cons: Not the fastest transfer speeds, but you get what you pay for. Would probably lose both the USB and SD card caps sooner or later, but not needed for operation.

Other Thoughts: A capless re design might be nicer. The transfer speed is fine for moving photos to a PC. Windows does not flag as USB 1 device. Even with USB 2 devices I seldom see transfer speeds over 10Mb anyway. Don't understand why someone would give 1 Egg review for this device, given cost the expectations were high.

1 out of 5 eggsNot what it seems . . .

Pros: Nice configuration of combination card reader/thumb drive. Stores card rather than most readers that have card stick out side. Wish a USB 3 version existed . . .

Cons: "Full Speed" (12Mb/sec.) not "High Speed" (480Mb/sec.) Real high speed throughput would, of course, be much lower than 480Mb, but still: this reader is slower than an old floppy. Couple that with the fact that this reader also intermittent failures during transfer of files larger than a few megabytes . . .

Other Thoughts: Contemporary expectation for USB 2.0 in a high capacity card reader has been, for nearly 10 years now, "high speed" 480Mb max. This reader is only "full speed" 12Mb capable, which actually conforms to USB 1.1. You need to read the fine print sometimes, even these days, when dealing with questionable sources, since the USB 2.0 standard "allows" this type of device to squeak through.

Since Newegg’s info was scant, I went to the manufacturer’s site (Inland) and looked up the same model, their only one (08821.) Inland claims their product is a”high speed” USB 2.0, which by definition is required to be a 480Mb device. Looking again at Newegg’s images of the product I see that the reader has different printing on it (includes the USB 2.0 logo on Inland’s site, none on Newegg) and that the blister card shown by Newegg states “USB 2.0 compatible.”

Obviously (to almost no one) USB 2.0 “compatible” can mean USB 1.1 “full speed” 12Mb instead of what one might expect.

Read the fine print; don’t be “surprised” like I was . . .
