1 out of 5 eggsSLOW. AVOID THIS DRIVE!

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: This drive was the cheapest one I could find.

Cons: This drive has been just as slow as my 5400 rpm drive that I replaced in my Dell XPS 1340 laptop. I just spoke with Jewell from customer support, and she said that my numbers ( 179.27 Sequential read/75.97 sequential write) are what this drive is supposed to run at. Please see the attached thumbnails. She also said that I needed to use ATTO SSD benchmark, not the one that I used. This Dr runs horribly slow, & I cannot believe that they would post such high numbers, when it wont even achieve half of that. Kingston has lost me and any of my friends and family as customers. Avoid this brand at all costs, if you want good customer service.

Manufacturer Response:

Randy F.,

Hello, I just wanted to clarify some information for you regarding your Dell XPS 1340 and the Kingston SSD. The Kingston SV300S37A/120G is a SATA 3 SSD, however, the Dell XPS 1340 only supports SATA2, and it is for this reason you are experiencing the reduced read/write speeds with this drive.

If you feel you need to call into our tech support line, I've generated a case for you, SR271141. Please feel free to contact us at, Kingston Techincal Support line: (800) 435-0640 (714) 435-2639 Monday - Friday 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. PST and we can assist with any questions that you may have.

Thank you for considering using Kingston Technology as your upgrade partner.
~Darren/Kingston Technical Support

4 out of 5 eggsWorks As Advertised

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The pros to this SSD are simple - it works, provides solid compatibility and doesn't do any funny business or corner cutting. The OS loaded fine as did several games.

Cons: This is the norm, but the SSD of course only provides 111GB of usable storage, notably less with an OS present. Estimate on the safe side and assume you'll get about 80-85GB to play with.

1 out of 5 eggsDumping of Mediocre Product

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Read speeds are OK for this entry-level SSD (but see below).

They're selling these off in 2-packs and 4-packs.

Cons: This is the notorius bait-and-switch V300 SSD which Kingston degraded by switching from good quality synchronous NAND memory chips (and good reviews) to a-synchronous NAND which significantly degraded performance on all incompressible data. The problem is widely known and Kingston themselves published results which show degraded performance.

Other Thoughts: The only test where this SSD shows decent performance is the easy ATTO benchmark. When tested on other well respected benchmarks such as AS-SSD or CrystalDiskMark the Write speed (for saving files) is slower than a regular spinning hard drive.

Looks like it's end of the line for this sad range of V300 models and they're being sold off in bundles.

If you only need a cheap SSD to Read files at OK speed this model will work, but Write speeds will slow down your work. Also, a-synchronous NAND has been shown to have shorter lifespan.

2 out of 5 eggsSSD? My 7200rpm hdd is faster

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Got this drive in a combo deal and it was easy to install and mount.

Cons: Slow as my 7200rpm hdd

Other Thoughts: So after doing a fresh install of Windows 7 with 24gb of ddr3 ram I was surprised that it took more than a minute to boot. I rebooted a few times just to see if performance improved but it didn't. I pulled the ram and tried new pairs thinking it was a bottleneck caused by the ram and put in low latency ram but still no dice, still slow boot times. Mounted my old 7200rpm drive and it booted faster. Kingston if your reading this give me some help, I will update this review if the speed issue is resolved.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Richard,
We are definitely here to help and will need to further investigate to see how we can resolve this for you. Please refer to case SR266567 and contact us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT or online: http://www.kingston.com/company/contacts#tech
and an available technician will work with you to see how we may improve the boot time.

Thank you for choosing the V300,
-Jewel @ Kingston TS

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Bought it on sale, and has been working as expected since installation. I sue this for a gaming drive, loads way faster than the mechanical drive it replaced.

Cons: Not as fast as other SSD drives, but works as advertised.

Other Thoughts: Was the correct size for my usage when I bought it, now I wish I bought a higher capacity drive, try to buy the biggest one you can afford.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid SSD

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Has worked consistently. Day and night difference with boot time once Windows was installed to the drive coming from a regular mechanical drive. When I broke the SATA data port the support staff was very helpful and worked to get a replacement quickly.

Cons: I did break the SATA data port. I would I was using a reasonable amount of force however the port snapped off entirely taking all of the pins with it. I would say it was mostly my fault however the I would question the plastic on that specific drive. However, the next one I received was perfect and I am still using it now.

Other Thoughts: I do not benchmark my drives. I mostly eye ball the speeds. In terms of read/write degradation over time I couldn't really tell you, but I can say assuredly it much faster than my mechanical drives and has stayed fast.

4 out of 5 eggsGood as a OS drive

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Relatively Cheap GB/$
All the pros of having an SDD over a HDD
3 year warranty

Cons: No Transfer Tools/ Software. It took me hours just trying to figure out how to transfer windows 10 to the drive correctly

Other Thoughts: Works well as a SDD/HDD combo. Kingston did not include OS transfer software for the drive. I recommend you just do a clean install.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for upgrading SATA II Computers

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Inexpensive. Probably cheapest SSD of this size on the market now.

Cons: Also probably slowest SSD on the market now.

Other Thoughts: If you want to utilize full potential of your SATA III laptop or desktop then look elsewhere. This SSD is a good upgrade for your SATA II device.
