5 out of 5 eggsone I got was great so far!

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Trying to help clear up the complaints here.
The drive I got says assembled in Taiwan. for testing purposes I installed it as a 2nd drive in my ASUS ROG laptop. installing as a 2nd drive is really the proper way to benchmark a disk (not having your OS running on it while testing). The drive was in AHCI mode and after mounting and formatting I ran ATTO with all default settings (direct and overlapped I/O, queue depth 4 etc. the speeds are amazing peaking at 549,072 read and 518,448 write! what's even more amazing is it ramps up close to these numbers very early on in the test with 64KB writes at just over 480,000 and 128KB reads at over 470,000! not sure how to stick a screenshot in the review or I would.
These tests show that at least the disk I received actually performs above the rated specs. if you're doubting the performance of the disk YOU received I highly suggest trying this testing method.

Cons: what's interesting is after the above test I stuck this same drive into a different laptop which is the laptop I really bought the drive for in the first place(Lenovo L412). The Lenovo would only post with the drive in compatibility mode (with the drive in AHCI mode I couldn't even get into bios). there were no updates for the laptop or drive so for whatever reason I was stuck using compatibility mode.
Unfortunately the Lenovo doesn't support a 2nd disk drive so I had to benchmark while running the OS. to minimize this having too much of an effect after installing windows, and all drivers, I disabled windows updates and turned off wifi and antivirus I ran process explorer to assure there was minimal disk activity.
the results in compatibility mode are MUCH slower (and interesting align with the same speeds listed in alot of the complaints). peak speeds were 211,850 read and 221,004 write.
like the previous test. these max speeds ramped up early on with 128KB's read and write being nearly identical to the 8MB test and 64KB coming surprisingly close.

Other Thoughts: from what I can see this is a SUPER fast drive but it NEEDS to be run in AHCI mode. I dont think the fact that its so much slower in compatibility mode is really the drive's fault. I urge every one who thinks their drives are slow to check bios and see if you're in AHCI mode or not. unfortunately its not easy to switch from compatibility to AHCI and usually requires a full reinstall. making a boot disk with mini XP, Hirens, or windows PE with ATTO should allow you to boot off a CD/USB stick and test in both AHCI and compatibility mode to see for yourselves.

1 out of 5 eggs3 DOA drives received during a sale.

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast boot times

Cons: The 3 units I received were all DOA. Frequently the SSD will not be discovered on boot or return from sleep. Occasionally SSD will lock up the entire system during POST. I've repeated the results on each on multiple laptops, of different generations and makes (all Dells), and updated the BIOS only to see the same symptoms. Really sucks that I have to pay/arrange return shipping for manufacturers screw up.

Other Thoughts: I've frequently bought Silicon Power SSD's and had no issues...

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Kevin,
We apologize for the issue experienced with the V300 drive. Please understand that is it standard RMA procedure to have the drives shipped to us and then we pay to ship out the replacements. If this is an issue, please contact our Warranty dept directly so they can work with you on different options considering your specific situation.

The SSD not being discovered may be related to a firmware incompatibility with some systems and the latest 600ABBF0 firmware on the newer revisions of the V300 drive. If your SSDs do that that firmware version, please call into our technical support as we may be able to resolve this without replacing the drives. Reach us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT.

Thank you for using the V300,
-Jewel, Kingston US Technical Support

5 out of 5 eggsGet it

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Works great, easy setup, opening large folders/files is much faster now.

Cons: Doesn't boot OS magically fast in my experience but still an improvement.

Other Thoughts: Helps to set BIOS to AHCI before you start.

1 out of 5 eggsThis drive barely counts as an SSD

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: It is Silent, which is nice, and it is faster than any 7200rpm drive, but not by much.

Cons: The point of buying an SSD is that you want those crazy fast speeds, and this drive doesn't cut it. I didn't know there was an entire scandal behind this drive (SSDnow V300) But there is! Google it.

Spend 5 more bucks and get a SanDisk or Crucial Drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I read some reviews that said this thing was slow. This is not the case in my experience. Windows 7 boots and you can open chrome 5 seconds after the BIOS splash scree (FX-8320.) It's fast enough to score a perfect 7.9 on the Windows experience system rating, for those who care about numbers. I see myself getting a second one for Skyrim and BF4. I recommend you have a dual drive setup with a SSD and a TB drive for programs and documents.

Cons: Visual studio professional took 30 minutes to install :(
I never knew how little 120 GB's was.

5 out of 5 eggsGood device

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Solid devices. Brought a couple old PCs back to life.

Cons: If the drives need a firmware update, you will not be able to flash it if your hard driver controller is not AHCI compliant. Called Kingston and they said the update was not applicable to XP so didn't worry about it on the one PC that had the older controller though it's still annoying that I can't update it without moving it to another PC.

Other Thoughts: Would definitely buy Kingston again.

4 out of 5 eggsNot the fastest, but it's still nice

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - Cheap
- Good boot drive for relatively light use

Cons: none for the price

Other Thoughts: Bought this with full knowledge of the hardware swap resulting in lesser performance than previously, but I got it on sale for $50, which is hard to beat. I use it as a boot drive for windows and commonly used programs. (Photoshop, Maya, Blender, Word, ect) I was at the very end of my PC budget and really wanted an SSD before I installed Windows. This fit the price and I'm happy with the performance.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad at all :D

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast
Cheap
Reliable
Cool

Cons: could be faster

Other Thoughts: Granted these drives are not the fastest horses on the track, they do get the job done:), I have mine connected to an older sata 2 board and going from a standard HDD to this, is like night and day :) Don't get discouraged about the asynchronous NAND. I use mine as a primary boot drive. I have it linked with a WD Blue EZEX. I still get 180MB transfer rates between the two.. The V300 is an excellent drive when used as a boot drive. Kingston also has an EXCELLENT RMA service too.
