3 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD for the price

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: The value you get with this thing is fantastic at the price point. I purchased one about a month ago and had impressive performance on both the read and write fronts. My system runs a dual-boot configuration with both Linux Mint and Windows 8. Linux boots in about 8 seconds and Windows takes a bit longer at around 15 or so. I was able to get up 428 MB/s transfer rate reading randomly. Considering the specification claims up to 450, I would say it did well for itself. Like others have said, this SSD is a relatively cheap alternative to others on the market, so you should not expect it perform as they do. That said, I must say it certainly holds its own insofar as performance gain over disk.

Cons: The performance tanked by about 66% after about a month.

Other Thoughts: I RMA'd the SSD and am waiting for the replacement to arrive. Hopefully what I have experienced is non-typical and the new drive will last much longer than 30 days.

1 out of 5 eggsYou need to know what you are getting.

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: - Cheap
- Hasn't failed yet.
- still get reasonably fast boot times - it's still an SSD after all.

Cons: - MUCH slower than advertised - less than 1/2 the speed they claim. And they know it.

Other Thoughts: Classic bait and switch - they originally used much faster type of memory chip, but then switched in slower cheaper chips, and didn't bother to tell their customers. They've admitted as much, but they aren't planning on making it right. Really a huge stain on Kingston, I was a fan of their memory cards but this is pretty much fraudulent - I expect to receive notice of a class action in the not-so-distant future.

The benchmarks of the drives Kingston sent to the reviewers are in the 25 read 125 write range - but I'm getting 12 read and 31 write (Crystaldiskmark, 4K) on a brand new SATA III build. A 2-year old Muskin SSD got in the ~30 read, 100 write range when I checked, so it's not the system that's the problem.

Now, that said, as long as you know what you're getting they're OK for their current price - they're still fast compared to a mechanical disk, and my boot time went from several minutes to 25 seconds. I presently have the 120GB set up as a boot and program drive; in retrospect it would have been better to get a 60GB and set it up as an SSD caching drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer some clarification. We designed the V300 to be a great entry level drive with a good mix of price and performance. To do that we source both synchronous and asynchronous NAND flash components for the V300 from various Tier 1 NAND manufacturers. This in turn creates a delta in performance from build to build, while all meet our baseline fresh-out-of-box spec of 450-450MB/s in ATTO, some may exceed. All Kingston SSDs go through a rigorous qualification process which begins with qualifying the NAND flash components we use to ensure a high quality product. More details on our testing procedures available here: http://www.kingston.com/us/company/testing . Per the datasheet the V300 120GB drive is expected to benchmark in CrystalDiskMark at 180MB/s Read and 133MB/s Write, found here: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/sv300s3_us.pdf . Considering you are reporting much lower speeds there may be something wrong with the drive you received. We are here to help and can troubleshoot with you to determine what may be causing the issue. If needed, the drive can be replaced under it's three year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

3 out of 5 eggscheap but slower than others

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: money was tight this year, so opted for this drive, on sale for $53.

What can I say? 4k sequental read at 18, Write at 78. Meh. Still faster than traditional platters, and cheap. Did i say cheap?

Cons: slower than other SSDs, but expected for price.

Other Thoughts: get what you pay for, and faster than spinning platters, that's for sure.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. The 120GB V300 is advertised to benchmark fresh-out-of-the-box at 450MB/s sequential read/write with compressible data and 180MB/s sequential read and 133MB/s sequential write with incompressible data. This information can be found in it's datasheet, here: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/sv300s3_us.pdf . If you are reporting the 4K Random benchmark results, it is hard to say if that would be an accurate description as it is not part of our specifications. We are here to help and can troubleshoot with you to determine if the drive is performing as specified. If not, the drive can be replaced under it's three year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap and quick

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: My laptop now boots in about 8 seconds. I picked it up on sale for 50 bucks and its been great. My laptop feels peppy and quick. I dont wait on my laptop, it waits on me. Did I mentions its pretty cheap.

Cons: Some people say it runs hot but right now its at 35C and for comparison the orignal HDD is 32C but its not spun up. and my CPU is at 38C right now. So you can say for yourself.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest you use it for your OS and used a HDD for storage to get the best of both worlds. If you have a laptop see if you can swap out your disc drive for another HDD bay.

4 out of 5 eggsNo Issues, Runs Fast

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: CHEAP
FAST
RELIABLE

Cons: NONE SO FAR

Other Thoughts: For the price, this is a great upgrade from an HDD. The storage is somewhat small, its easy to forget how little room I have, BUT everything is fast, applications open with almost zero hesitation on first start, after that its no hesitation at all. SPOILED NOW.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget buy

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Everything you'd expect from the speed of an SSD at great price. Currently boots my windows 7 Home premium in around 8 seconds (From power button to login screen). Comes with optional extra backing for a more snug fitting.

Cons: Its only 120 GB, but that's clearly to be expected.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent upgrade, never going back to HDD

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: My windows boot time SIGNIFICANTLY faster since installing this SSD. Installation was a breeze. Definitely worth the upgrade if you can afford it.

Cons: 120GB isn't very much space and goes quick. If you have extra money, invest in a larger capacity.

5 out of 5 eggsFirst Solid State

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Quick boot times, and great speed, what more can a guy want?

Cons: needs to come with a bracket kit

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a boot drive for my new pc, I have stupid fast boot times now that would make a weenie from that fruit company cry. My one and only complaint is that these should come with a drive bracket kit for 3.5 in the retail packaging. Other than that, I am smitten

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S37A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: I added a SSD 1 year after building my gaming PC. This is the most cost effective upgrade you can do . Great price . I also upgrade my OS to Windows 8.1 which allows for even faster boot times .

Cons: Is not the fastest SSD
