This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: UPDATE: This model's performance is very low compared to other similar priced SSDs. The Mushkin Enhanced ECO2 and the PNY CS 1311 are both clearly superior and they cost only about $5 more than this Kingston model. Check them out here on Newegg.
Read speeds are OK for this entry-level SSD (but see below).

They're selling these off in 2-packs and 4-packs.

Cons: This is the notorius bait-and-switch V300 SSD which Kingston degraded by switching from good quality synchronous NAND memory chips (and good reviews) to a-synchronous NAND which significantly degraded performance on all incompressible data. The problem is widely known and Kingston themselves published results which show degraded performance.

Other Thoughts: The only test where this SSD shows decent performance is the easy ATTO benchmark. When tested on other well respected benchmarks such as AS-SSD or CrystalDiskMark the Write speed (for saving files) is slower than a regular spinning hard drive.

Looks like it's end of the line for this sad range of V300 models and they're being sold off in bundles.

If you only need a cheap SSD to Read files at OK speed this model will work, but Write speeds will slow down your work. Also, a-synchronous NAND has been shown to have shorter lifespan.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Andrew!
We appreciate your review and feedback. Our V300 series SSD's were originally released back in 2012, as you can imagine SSD Nand technology has since improved compared to the 2015 models you mentioned. The reason we suggest to test the V300 SSD's with ATTO is based on it's ability to benchmark with COMPRESSED DATA. (Real-world) as opposed to AS-SSD and CrystalDiskMark which excel with incompressible data. We also provide results for those applications if you would like to compare:

Incompressible Data Transfer AS-SSD / CrystalDiskMark
120GB — 180MB/s Read and 133MB/s Write

Compressible Data Transfer (ATTO)
All capacities: 450MB/s Read and 450MB/s Write

Our V300 series SSD's deliver a great value for those transitioning from mechanical HDD's as we also have higher performing SSD's such as our HyperX Savage and Predator lines if speed is a crucial part of your computer build.

Feel free to let us know for any feedback!
Regards,
Felinni M. @KingstonTechnology

4 out of 5 eggsSSDs to the rescue

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: Reasonable price - fast quiet, cool !

Cons: Still looking for a con. LOL

Other Thoughts: I uses these 120GB SSDs to make clones of my C drive. Should there be a problem (disk crash, ransomware or other major event), I can use the cloned C drive to get back to where I was by swapping hard drives, or otherwise cloning the original C drive from the clone.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: The price is appealing.
It works.

Cons: I purchased this SSD thinking it was competitve with other SSD read & write speeds at a great price.
I benchmarked this SSD using several different programs (ATTO, AS SSD, Crystalmark etc.) and found them to be very unsatisfactory.
Apparently Kingston changed flash memory from Toshiba to Micron some time ago (without telling anyone), resulting in greatly reduced read & write speeds.
I get approximately 400 Mb/s Read and less than 100 Mb/s Write speeds.
Quit terrible.

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a deal on an SSD I would go with Mushkin or PNY.
Next time I will opt for the Samsung Evo.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to Install, Fast Startup Times

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: - Plugged it in and the drive was ready to go
- Price: $40 is a price that can't be beat
- From off to running in less than six seconds
- No complaints about the speed

Cons: - I wish is was larger :P

Other Thoughts: I needed a hard drive upgrade and this made a great choice for my boot drive. I would probably do it all over again if I had a chance. The price and ratings were too good to pass up on.

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT little SSD's

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: Cheap enough to put on any system / Super Fast as SSDs should be

Cons: Purchased many of these drives (30+) in the past few months no issues or DOA's YET

Other Thoughts: Kinston seems to have quality control on point with this product. I'll continue to recommend and purchase as long as they keep it up.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat os ssd

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SV300S37A/120G

Pros: Plenty fast. I came from a WD Blue os drive. I keep forgetting that it only takes seconds for my computer to reach windows.

Cons: -only 110gb, but that occurs to all hdds and ssds, so no problem.

Other Thoughts: Of course don't go expect to install everything on it,, probably will be getting a 480gb version in the future for my games.
