4 out of 5 eggsNew Life to Old Hardware

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: Not expensive
Provides real benefit
Kit includes all you need
Installation is within reach of non-technical people

Cons: Instructions do not mention when or how to use spacer

Other Thoughts: I used this to upgrade a 100 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive in a Dell D620 laptop. Installation went according to the instructions and videos, EXCEPT it wouldn't recognize the new SSD at first.

A few minutes poking around discovered that the new SSD fit into the hard drive slot, but was not making any connection to the computer as it was too short! Inside the kit, though, is this rectangle of plastic with some adhesive tabs. Yup...put it under the SSD, slide it in, and the connections match and from there everything went according to plan. But there was NO mention of the spacer in the instructions or video.

Also, the Acronis cloning software claimed the cloning would take 15 minutes...it took a little over 40, so just be patient. :-)

It brought my Windows Experience Index from 5.0 to 6.7. Cold boot time went from 47 to 18 seconds.

4 out of 5 eggsOn sale for great price

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: Good laptop upgrade kit. Purchased for a refurbished Lenovo T60. Included cloning software worked ok, but I used it in conjunction with MiniTool Partition Wizard.

7 weeks use so far and no issues. Not the best SSD out there, but priced very well (purchased on sale) and the speed doesn't matter anyway since my T60's SATA controller is limited to SATA/I.

Cons: External enclosure can be hard to open, and is on the cheap side. I know it's probably meant for temporary use, but also seems adequate to house the old HDD in as an external backup. Heat dissipation leaves a lot to be expected though. Expect it to get really hot during prolonged read/write cycles such as reformatting a disk.

Other Thoughts: If you're patient, you could get a higher capacity SSD from one of the better manufacturers on sale for a lower price, though you might have to wait awhile.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: Well it worked good for just over a year.

Cons: I have read that some SSD's crash within a few months or have lasted a couple of years. My drive split the difference...just dying in just over a year's time. Over the past few weeks, my drive had started crashing for no reason. Ran multiple drive scans and virus scans and everything came back with no errors or viruses. Then finally today...it bit the bullet. I can access the drive and will not so up on any other computer I hook it up too.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsMissing the SSD and DVD!

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: None at all since the drive and dvd was not in the box and the retailer(OfficeMax) nor Kingston will do anything about it! I had to go buy another Kingston SSD from Staples later that night because I needed a drive and wanted a SSD.

Cons: NO SSD DRIVE OR DVD WAS SHIPPED IN THE BOX! I ended up buying another Kingston SSD later that night but I will return it as this company is junk and won't support their customers! So I basically spent $100 for a case and accessories.

Other Thoughts: Buy a different and better brand! Going to return the Kingston HyperX(second drive)because I will not support this company.Gonna go buy a Seagate 1tb hybrid drive.

5 out of 5 eggshappy happy happy

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: This is Kingston SSD #3. Top shelf vendor. Software works, help on the web, and hardward that is what it says.

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: This was bought to replace the HDD in a Dell refurb laptop I bought at the same time. Once the Windows was registered, I the sector copy, and swapped the drives. Too easy.. just like before. My wife now has a SSD Dell laptop with Windows 7 for under $400!

5 out of 5 eggsVery Smooth Transition

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: I purchased the Kingston Bundle Kit to speed up my HP Laptop while still utilizing the old HDD. The cloning software worked as advertised and in less then an hour, everything was transferred and my old HDD was set up for storage.

Cons: Wish the enclosure included USB 3.0, but it was very clear in the description that it did not. No reason to deduct an egg.

Other Thoughts: Well worth the buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSHD to build with or upgrade with

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: Pros: This is one of the best SSHD's I've ever used period. I've built hundreds of gaming computers, normal computers, and upgraded 10 year old laptops with this hard drive and it changes them into something totally different. Example: I replaced the HDD in my little brother's Dell Inspiron 9400 from an 80GB 5400rpm w 1GB ram to one of these 120GB Kingston SV300 w 1GB ram and now his laptop boots from cold start to roaming the internet in 12 seconds. No joke. You can even go into your system settings and fool Windows into using 4GB of the space on this SSHD into using it for ram! So now my brothers Dell went from a slow 80GB 5400rpm 1GB that was slow running XP. Now its running a 120GB SV300 thinking and acting like it has 4GB of ram with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit faster than any new laptop you could buy with a normal rpm HDD.

Cons: CONS: The one and only con I have for this SSHD is the lack of firmware upgrades Kingston offers. They rarely if not ever release new firmware that adds anything to their SSHD's. But usually firmware upgrades are only needed when a companies SSHD's are having problems and since these have never acted up on me and I've purchased over 20 in the last year, I'd say they are bulletproof.

Other Thoughts: If your wondering if buying a SSHD will speed up your system, stop wondering. It will make your slow laptop faster than a desktop with a quad core processor. If you install one of these in your system with a fresh install of whatever operating system your using, you will be the happiest person!
DO NOT EVER RUN DEFRAGMENTER WITH SSHD!!!!
TAKE OR DELETE DEFRAGMENTER SOFTWARE RIGHT OFF YOUR COMPUTER IF USING ONE OF THESE!!!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat SSD For Upgrading

This review is from: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series SV300S3N7A/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Bundle Kit - Retail

Pros: So I finally bit the bullet and purchased my first SSD. The reason why I purchased this model was for two reasons. First...I read really good reviews about Kingston SSD's and Second...it came with the HDD cloning software. I must say that I'm very impressed of the difference it made in my two and half year old Asus laptop. My boot time went to from about one minute to 22 seconds! I also noticed that my Windows 7 and other programs seem to be running a lot smoother than it ever did before, most noticeable in Photoshop while making my website graphics. The only problem that I had was a mistake on my part. When cloning your HDD, you must boot your computer from the CD which has the cloning software. I was still trying to boot from the HDD. It took me a few times before realizing my mistake. After I figured out what I did wrong, the cloning process was simple. I highly recommend this drive if you are in the market to upgrade your computer!

Cons: None
