1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware - will *NOT* work with 720K disks

Pros: Works OK with 1.44MB floppies (format/read/write)...for the moment.

Cons: * Does not recognize 720K disks (read/write/format).
* Is a *USED* (or pulled) floppy drive installed in a USB case
* Shows up as a "TEAC UF000x USB Drive" in Device Manager, but does *NOT* have a TEAC drive (read further down).
* Many mis-leading model number labels on the bottom of the case. For example:
ASM 27L4226
FRU 05K9283
Model No: FD05-PUB
P/N: 19308801-19
(If you've worked in IT long enough, you'll recognize some of these as part numbers from IBM and TEAC). Including these part numbers is a common tactic used by companies selling "generic" products as searches are often done by part number.

Other Thoughts: I normally don't write reviews, but I decided to do this one in response to a "Customer question" e-mail from Newegg.

To confirm what others have noticed, this drive will *NOT* work with 720K Double Density disks. After receiving the request e-mail from Newegg, I decided to dig out some old 720K floppies (that took a while!) and test the drive against a Sony MPF-88E 2x USB floppy drive and a trusty old Teac FD235J 2.88MB "real" floppy drive (both long discontinued). The Sony and Teac drives handled the 720K disks without issue. This Nippon Labs drive refused to even recognize a formatted 720K disk stating it was unreadable.

To diagnose further, I took apart the housing (snap tight clamshell with one screw under the "QC" sticker) and was surprised by what I found...the actual drive itself was a YE Data YD-702J, not a TEAC drive as reported to Windows. YE Data was a decent manufacturer of floppy drives, so this isn't a problem. What *ARE* problems are the drive's date of manufacture (07/2005) and the condition of the drive (scratched, dirty, dented/mangled sheet metal cover). This drive was obviously previously used and repackaged as a "new" product in a USB clamshell housing with a USB to floppy circuit board interface.

As I could now tell it was an old, possibly used drive, I decided to clean the drive heads and re-try using 720K disks - no go. The USB interface board itself is tiny with one control IC, a 12MHz crystal, and several passive components, so it seems the interface has faulty code such that it won't work with 720K disks (someone probably forgot to add the 9 sector support as they never ever encountered a 720K disk!).

In summary, this drive is a cheap generic device with what appears to be "recycled" slim-line floppy drives repackaged in a clamshell with a USB interface. Definitely no better than the cheaper alternatives, especially if you expected to get a better quality unit for $30 (the price I paid).

I don't fault Newegg for selling this product - they sell way too many products to verify all of them. And Nippon Labs is just selling what they bought on the wholesale market - these look identical to other "generic" USB floppy drives I've seen on the internet...even down to the serial number (U356244).

So, in essense, BUYER BEWARE. Pick another product that isn't $30 and "recycled".

5 out of 5 eggsHey, it's a floppy drive!

Pros: USB 2; fairly well made; traditionally black; doesn't need external power; compact form factor; pretty light; priced about right

Cons: None really ... unless it blows up ... which it hasn't ...

Other Thoughts: it doesn't seem to support the old IBM high capacity (2.1MB) format. But that's not a con really. It's not USB 3, but hey it's a floppy after all ... how fast can it be?

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The Product was delivered on time , good job New Egg Work as expected for a FDD

Cons: Those not respond all the time but I attribute that to Windows 7 compatibility issues, not the product itself

4 out of 5 eggsHidden Virtue

Pros: The drive installed itself on Windows 7 (64 bit) without a hitch as soon as I plugged it in to the USB port. (The enclosed CD was not needed.) It is a TEAC floppy. Device Manager and USB controller identified it as such. Once I figured out how to find it in my applications, it worked fine.

Cons: The drive did not appear listed under "Computer" in Windows Explorer, which created a lot of confusion and efforts to find it. This led me to check Device Manager and USB controllers. However, I found that when I clicked on "Computer" in Windows Explorer the drive icon appeared in the right panel. When I click on the icon, it appeared in the list below "Computer." Similarly, I did not see the drive listed when I tried to open a file of my word processors. However, when I entered "a:" as the file name the drive appeared.

Other Thoughts: Although a bit confusing to figure out at first, it worked OK for a drive that not designed for Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsHad no idea these even existed

Pros: This was perfect for pulling files off all my old floppy discs. I recently moved from Colorado to Missouri so I was going through a lot of junk in my basement when I came across a bunch of old 3.5" floppies. It read even some of the oldest discs that I thought were unreadable.

I highly recommend this product if you want to retrieve files from your old floppies but your shiny new computer doesn't have a floppy drive!

Cons: None!

1 out of 5 eggsUSB To Floppy item 21-105-004

Pros: None

Cons: Won't format or read 1.44 floppies, can't copy files off existing disks, excruciatingly slow at doing nothing, under W7 Professional [32 bit].

Other Thoughts: Made in China. I gave it one star only because the New Egg system would not allow me to give it none.
