4 out of 5 eggsAdequate floppy drive for modern systems

Pros: Low cost, name brand, works

Cons: Short USB cord

Other Thoughts: Need an inexpensive, portable external floppy drive? This one was recognized on all my computers (two Windows XP and one Linux) and works. Completely adequate for my infrequent need to access a floppy.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT get this for windows XP driver installation

Pros: somewhat cheap

Cons: I bought this in anticipation of my new dell 9200 desktop - I want to install my copy of windows xp pro on it instead of the vista that comes with it.

However, this floppy is not recognized by the windows xp installer:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196

I ended up taking my new computer apart and installing an old floppy drive in it which took me almost a day to finish the os installation.

Other Thoughts: since my dell shipment is delayed, when i found out this floppy is useless it's already out of the 30 days period and i cannot return it.

3 out of 5 eggsSlow, but not that big of a deal

Pros: It is external, and it is a floppy, which will be more than suitable for 99% of people even looking at this product. Also as an interesting side note, this drive will format diskettes at not only the standard 1.44MB (512 bytes/sector) size, but 1.2MB (512 bytes/sector) and 1.25MB (1024 bytes sector), which are Japanese format sizes, which could come in handy if you are copying Japanese computer diskettes. The 1.2 format would give the ability to match a 5 1/4" HD floppy exact as well.

Cons: This has to be the slowest floppy drive I have ever used, even when compared to internal floppy drives. Yes, I know that the 3 1/2" diskette format is not that fast in the first place, but this thing is slow even compared to that standard. It is also only USB 1.1, which I doubt is the reason for the speed. On a system I am using this for, I would only be using it to boot diskettes anyway, and occasionally copying something when I don't want to burn a CD for a DOS machine. Windows 2000 required a driver, which I found very odd, considering I have another external floppy, and it needs no such driver, even in Windows 98; as a side note, the driver is easily found via Windows Update (NEC even tells you to use that on their support section for the drive). Systems have no problem seeing the drive to boot outside of Windows though.

Other Thoughts: The speed being so slow on this particular unit is definitely the worst aspect. No drop offs on this end, and I use USB extension cables already, so the cable length is not an issue for me, even though I can easily see what others are talking about; it could definitely be longer (12" is not really enough for some setups). Probably best if you have front USB ports, or if you sit the unit as far back as possible on your tower/system. Another option would be to mount the drive on the side of your case with velcro or permanently. Also, it is no louder than any other floppy I have used. I wish Newegg would have had the black colored version in stock when I purchased this one, as I would have rather had it instead.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Recognized by Windows XP installer, and works perfectly on my XP and OS X systems

Cons: Short cord, and slow read speeds from EZ Flash 2 BIOS update thing, but otherwise, works as well as any floppy drive

2 out of 5 eggsLess Than Pleased

Pros: Provides a floppy when you need one. Most of the time.

Cons: Constantly dropping off of the systems I connect it to... Suddenly they just won't recognize it or the media within. Typically tells me the disk is not formatted or there is no disk in the drive. Disconnect/reconnect is required to make it operable again.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works well, reasonably priced. Neutral beige color.

Cons: Cord is a little too short. Not long enough to sit drive on top of a computer. Can remedied if you have a USB extension cable, but that's extra.

Other Thoughts: Overall great drive. I use this in stead of installing internal drives into my computers. Just wish the cord was a little longer, but I can deal with that.

4 out of 5 eggsbetter than an internal floppy drive

Pros: I have multiple computers and it's useful having an external floppy that I can share among them for boot disks, BIOS upgrades, etc...

Cons: the cord is really short

Other Thoughts: To reply to XB3, I initially thought I couldn't use this during Windows installation either since the drive did nothing when I tried to install RAID drivers during my Windows install. However, setting the Floppy A drive to "NONE" in the BIOS actually fixes this problem because Windows will stop trying to look for a floppy drive connected via the FDD cable and instead recognize the USB floppy drive as drive A.

5 out of 5 eggsNot for XP installation

Pros: Works great, no problems

Cons: None noted

Other Thoughts: nikolokolus review led me to believe this product would be recognised by Windows XP at installl for driver installation. WRONG!

5 out of 5 eggsFair price and reliable

Pros: Portability, reliability, works as advertised for a decent price.

Cons: A little on the noisy side and it's a floppy drive -- if that can be counted as a con?

Other Thoughts: I just needed a floppy drive for occasional BIOS updates, Loading RAID drivers at install and creating the odd system restore floppy when performing backups.

To dogcatcher below who wondered why it came sealed in bubble wrap and nothing else, it's an OEM product; that's true for almost any OEM product, they come from the factory that way.
