5 out of 5 eggs3 yrs later and still works FAST!

Pros: Fast data read/write to my older '07 MacBook Pro w/ OS 10.6.8. I paid $105 when I was deployed and this HD took a beating and still works to this day! (touch wood)

Cons: I should have bought 2 of these with the other for my wife's MBP.

1 out of 5 eggsFireWire Doesn't Work

Pros: Low price and many connectivity options.

Cons: Does not appear to be reliable. None of the FireWire ports work correctly.

Other Thoughts: This worked fine with the USB input but try to use the firewire 400 or 800 ports and speed drops to a mere few KB/sec, rather than MB/s. It ran all night on firewire 800 on my mac pro and couldn't even back up a few gigs of video over firewire. Reformatted for Windows and same issue with my PC.

USB works fine however and since I missed my return window, I'm using it via USB 2.0.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive stinks

Pros: Works well with XP and Mac

Cons: Windows 7 support is suspect

Other Thoughts: Worked great for all Operating Systems then windows 7 came out and it wouldn't read/write. Called support and they said my drive failed. sure enough the drive indeed failed and I could no longer use it for XP. I had it RMAd. Replacement drive still does not work with Windoows 7. Grr

2 out of 5 eggsMixed

Pros: Worked like good out of box and for a few weeks.

Cons: After about 3 weeks it showed connected to my Mac but i could not get to the drive. I would have to turn it off and then back on to get it to work. Like it was in power save mode of something.

Other Thoughts: I hope tech support can help.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but not perfectly

Pros: High capacity, fairly fast, has firewire 800

Cons: I leave it plugged into my MacBook Pro and turned on all the time as a Time Machine backup. Sometimes the drive would spin down, and then not spin back up again and OS X would freeze completely while trying to get it to spin up. Only solution was to disable hard drive spin down in system prefs.

Included USB cable also inexplicably ceased to work and I had to get another one.

Other Thoughts: Firewire 800 speeds with this drive are not enough faster than USB 2.0 to make up for the inconvenience of lugging around a power adapter. Would have been happier with a USB-powered drive (or two) most likely.

1 out of 5 eggsgreat at first, useless in the long run

Pros: worked great out of the box.

Cons: worked for barely three months.

Other Thoughts: i used this to transfer files one time, and as an auto-backup hard drive twice. total time used, about three weeks. total file transfers, less than 2 GB.
i've now had it for around 100 days, and it suddenly stopped working. right now it is sitting next to my computer making a constant waivering whining noise with a tiny click every half second. the computer can not detect it, no matter what OS I use. i've tried everything. it's dead, and for no reason.

5 out of 5 eggsGreta Drive!

Pros: This drive is excellent! It is 1 TB and is pre-formatted in HFS+ what more could you ask for. I hooked it up to my MacBook Pro and it worked right out of the box. I have had the drive for almost a year and so far I have had no problem with it. The stand is great and keeps it standing even when the desk is shaking violently. I have my entire life on mine and I trust it wholeheartedly.

Cons: It has a USB 2.0 Port on it! I hate USB!

Other Thoughts: This drive is a great deal. I bought it when it cost $220 and it was worth it. I'm going to be buying a second one at the end of the month, I filled my first one up.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great for me

Pros: I like the size of this drive. For class most people got Western Digital MyBook drives. They're more cube like. This drive is thinner, but longer. It's because of this the drive can fit into my camera bag -- which is rather nice for me.
Also the drive's enclosure feels pretty solid. I was a little concerned based on the photo that it would be an extremely thin, flimsy enclosure, but not so.

As for performance, I haven't had an issue with it so long as I use Firewire 800. Sometimes I use the Firewire 400 bus, but that doesn't have the bandwidth for a stereo 48kHz AIFF and one uncompressed 8 bit 720p/24 video file. With the Firewire 800 interface the drive can deliver this much data. For me Firewire 800 was worthwhile.

Cons: The vertical stand doesn't inspire total confidence for me. In the classroom people are often connecting peripherals to the computers, and I was always concerned someone would bump it and knock it over. I used the vertical stand for a little while, but found it was a bit more of a hassle to carry that around and use it than it was to just put the drive on its side--not to mention I no longer have concerns about it being bumped. Not really a con per say, but worth noting.

Other Thoughts: I wish hard drive makers would put the power supply in the drive. I suppose the transformer must make some electromagnetic interference that prohibits it from being so close to magnetic storage. As with all wall-warts sometime the power supply will be the wrong size or be in the wrong orientation when there's one place left to plug in. That's just how it works.
To Cavalry's credit, the power cord has always been long enough for me to find somewhere to plug in if it won't fit into the closest power location.

If I had to do it again I would buy this drive once more.

1 out of 5 eggsStay Away

Pros: none

Cons: died within 12 hours

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive to replace my other external drive that died this week. Within 12 hours of taking it out of the box, it died with a days worth of work lost. I live close enough to the factory so I took it directly to the source, but they couldn't do anything about it except give me a new one. If you don't care about saving what's on your hard drive, this is the one for you.
